LYS Saturday Report -- December 13th, 2008

Greetings!

  

As usual, this is Julie Gardner, Managing Director of Lincoln Youth Symphony.  For previous emails (or to read this one in another location), see the Lincoln Youth Symphony Blog, our Weekly Rehearsal Report, here.

 

Last Saturday, we announced what music we will be playing for the February 28th concert & March 2nd trip to Abravanel Hall. So here is what you need to practice (like crazy) before the next rehearsal on January 10th:

Symphony No. 4, 2nd Movement, with all five flats, by P.Tchaikovsky

Prometheus Overture, by Beethoven

 

The other pieces in your folder will be for the April 24th concert:

Intermission - Ten Minutes (a funky thing that begins with an ending and ends with a beginning) by Don Gillis

The Lord of the Dance (because we promised in September that we'd play it later in the year) by Ronan Hardiman

And the following pieces yet to be checked out:

Dvorak's New World Symphony, 3rd movement (I think that's what we decided!)

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, one or two sections, by Greig

We will be having auditions on January 17th (our second rehearsal in January) for certain Tchaikovsky Bassoon soloes for the cellos. I will scan the music and send it to you so you can work on it, as well as posting it on the LYS website. I promise to do it soon, but I have to have a certain son of mine help me with the scanner since it no longer works with windows and he has to do it with his Linux box, as he calls it. :)

 

We will did have a potluck treat break, but I never went out to see what the food was... How silly of me!   

 

Here is your Christmas Break homework: Number your measures, please. Write the measure number at the beginning of each line. Do not number every measure. It's too messy. Just so we are all on the "same page," and we don't have interesting experiences, here are the measure numbers at certain places in each piece of music:

Concerto Auditions

 

Concerto Auditions went well. We were impressed with everyone's efforts and pleased with the growth we have seen. Congratulations to Kandra Patterson. She has been selected to play her piece with us: Mozart's Andante in C K315 in our next concert on February 28th!

LYS Saturday Report -- December 6th, 2008

Greetings!

  

As usual, this is Julie Gardner, Managing Director of Lincoln Youth Symphony.  For previous emails, see the Lincoln Youth Symphony Blog, our Weekly Rehearsal Report, here.

 

We had a fun rehearsal today, listening to and playing new music!

 

We sight read & checked out the following music:

Intermission - Ten Minutes (a funky thing that begins with an ending and ends with a beginning) by Don Gillis

The Lord of the Dance (because we promised in September that we'd play it later in the year) by Ronan Hardiman

Prometheus Overture (much more slowly than the recording!) by Beethoven

Legend (looks like no one has ever played it & it's old!) by Merle J. Isaac

Symphony No. 4, 2nd Movement (absolutely gorgeous, but look out for all five flats!) by P.Tchaikovsky

 

We also looked at music for and listened to the following, which we will hand out when we receive the transposed parts for the winds (which we are ordering soon with admission money from the recent concert - thank you for your support!).

Symphony No. 9 (5), From the New World by Antonin Dvorak

 

We plan to order transposed parts (also with admission money from the recent concert) and check out one other piece as well, Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1.

 

We have not yet chosen which pieces we will be using for which concert, but we will let you know next week so you can practice your guts out during the break!

 

Our next rehearsal is December 13th. We will be having a potluck treat break , so plan ahead to bring some goodies! Don't bring too many, and err on the side of un-messy, okay? This will be our last before the Christmas Break (first rehearsal after the New Year: January 10th).

 

Remember, Erik N, to bring your music next week so you can have the new music to take home next Saturday. Also, there are two people (K.M. and C.G.B.) who have stopped coming to orchestra but we still need you to turn in your music or we will have to assess a hefty fee!

LYS Extra Report -- December 4th, 2008

Of course, we had no rehearsal on November 29th; I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend!

 

Our next rehearsal is December 6th. That's this Saturday, so don't forget to come!

 

The following rehearsal, December 13th, will be our last before the Christmas Break. We will be having a potluck treat break that day, so plan ahead to bring some goodies!

We will be handing out music for the rest of the year this Saturday, December 6th - for both the Abravanel Hall/Concerto concert, and the final concert. Only those who have turned in music will receive their new music. We will include the list of music and what we will play for each concert in the Saturday Report after this rehearsal (after we have heard you play it!). So, we will be sight-reading this Saturday. Fun!

What a lovely concert! 

Thank you all for working so hard to make it successful.

 

There is no rehearsal next week, November 29. After all, it's Thanksgiving weekend, and we just had a concert. Our next rehearsal is December 6th.

LYS Saturday Report -- November 15th, 2008 -- and rehearsal location change

Greetings!

 

Important information: We announced last week that our dress rehearsal would be at the High School Auditorium, but due to the exorbitant additional cost of doing that, we have moved the regular morning rehearsal back to the band room at ACYI. Sorry to be confusing!

 

Additional Important Information: The concert will be Saturday, November 22, 2008, at 7:00 pm at the High School Auditorium at 400 S and 600 W in Brigham City. The concert will be in the Box Elder High School Auditorium. Call time (that means arrival time) for the concert is 5:45 pm. We will be starting each of our pieces at 6:00 SHARP on the stage. We will exit the stage at 6:15 so LYCO can do the same. It's an abbreviated dress rehearsal. Please arrange your schedules so you can be warmed up and ready at the correct time. If we start earlier than 6:00 you will each receive a gold star on your forehead! Audience will be admitted to the auditorium after sound checks end, between 6:30 and 6:45.Please arrange your schedules so you can be warmed up and ready at the correct time.

We will be moving percussion equipment to the high school after the regular Saturday morning rehearsal. I had one person volunteer on the audition form to help haul percussion. November 8, 2008

 

We had a good rehearsal!  What a fantastic bunch of youth we have!

 

At this point, you all know which spots in the music are plaguing you (I know which ones are plaguing me, too!).  Don't forget to take the music out at home and work on it!  Don't be surprised if Mr Findlay stops, points directly at you, and asks you to play your part by yourself!  (Actually, he didn't threaten to do that. I am threatening for him. Do you think he'll read this? I wonder!)

 

We were glad to have most of our violins back today!  Yippee! Thank you to all who are consistent in your attendance. It makes a big difference!

 

I am still working on recruiting percussion. My efforts this week did not pan out, but I will keep trying and next week we will have people playing back there... Let me know if you have any ideas!

Thursday, November 13, 5:30 pm, at the Hunter's 657 N 800 W, Brigham City: bring your ideas or just a willingness to help as we organize our Silent Auction donation drive. This will be fun! Pull your mother's arm... Make her come (Well, at least beg... Regular rehearsals the next two Saturdays, November 15 and 22, 8:30 to 11:00 am. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to set up and be ready to play at 8:30. Let's be prompt!  Keep up the good work! You are Important!

LYS Gala Fundraiser - This is Going To Be Fun. Come party with us!

Greetings!

 

Each year we have a catered Dutch Oven Amazingly Fabulous dinner and silent auction that involves the community and raises much needed operating costs for the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, our parent organization. We need to raise at least $6,000. The bare-minimum budget including building rental, insurance, artistic staff, and other things is $25,000 per year. Your Membership Fees account for only a small percentage of that money. It is extremely important that we make this year's fundraiser successful since one of the foundations we normally receive grant money from has reorganized recently and we are not optimistic that the $6,000 will ever materialize.

 

At this point, we are beginning our campaign (dare I use that word so close after elections?) for donated items or services for the auction. We have many ideas of what we would like to see at the auction, but we need your input. We are also beginning a publicity campaign to inform the public so we can sell tickets to more people than just our families!

 

We need parents and musicians to follow up letters with phone calls to businesses that may potentially donate. We have set a meeting time of 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. next Thursday, November 13, at the Hunter's home, 657 N 800 W Brigham City, to create our list of businesses and assign people to follow up with phone calls. Many Hands Make Light Work!

 

If you cannot make the meeting, we will still let you help. Just let us know how many businesses you are willing to follow up with, and we can accomodate! (I'm trying to be funny. Is it working?)

 

Thank you to Tyler Hunter and the Hunter family for all they did last year to make this operation a success. And a bigger thank you to Tyler and Melinda Hunter for their inspiring vision of what this event can become!

 

Please save me a lot of phone calls and respond to this email. Make the decision now to donate a little time to a very good cause! The Fundraiser will be successful because you are helping. I can feel it in my bones!

October 25, 2008

 

The spot checks we assigned a couple weeks ago were canceled!  I'm sure all who missed rehearsal will be sad not to have to make them up. We have chosen to expect you to learn your music without being scared into it.

I know we had a rocky start with extra auditions for a few weeks, but now is the time to step up your promptness and be perfectly on time!  Let's start on time. For those of you who are new, we used to start at 8:00 am, but we are happy to start at 8:30 if we truly start then!
