Time Schedule

4:30 pm - Setup - If you can come this early, we'll appreciate your help.

5:15 - 5:45 pm - NUYS Sound Check on stage

6:00 - 6:30 pm - NUYCO Sound Check on stage

7:00 pm Concert! Invite friends!

Help

    We will need help moving chair and stand carts to the stage before the concert as well as stacking them and returning the carts to the band room directly after the concert. 

    We will also need a couple of parents to pick up any programs/trash that are left behind in the theatre.

Location

Ogden High School - 2828 Harrison Blvd (google maps link)

    Parking is available on both sides of the building.  Parking is also available alongside the bus roundabout along Harrison but the west doors will not be open.
    The doors that will be open are the south east doors with access through the courtyard from the north parking lot; and the doors in the South parking lot by the sports fields.

Clothing

We wear standard "Concert Black".

    Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.

    Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black. 

Food

You may want to bring a sack dinner to eat during the NUYCO sound check. If you do, bring only WATER to drink, eat only in the hallways of the school, not in the band room or the auditorium. Clean up after yourself meticulously, please. :)

Let's Keep the Energy Up!

The End is Not Yet:

Thank you for your wonderful energy and time on Monday! What a fun experience!

We are getting close to the end of our season, and we want our Finale to go off with a bang! I know we are all hoping for Spring Break, but there are too many schools with too many different Spring Breaks to take one. Your Spring Break can be April 30 (after the concert)! :)

Folders:

Thank you for handing in your music! Only a couple people (who have stopped coming) have not turned in their music, and they have been contacted. Can I tell you how happy I am when all the music comes home! Bravo, all of you!

Overview:

We have exactly 6 Saturday rehearsals before our final concert, which is fewer than usual! We will be getting all new music this Saturday. Be sure to communicate well about attendance. Here is the link to my favorite way for you to tell me (although you are always welcome to text or email).

New Music:

The hardest will be the Violin Concerto by Samuel Barber, performed by Megan Brasher. We will have the music for this Saturday; according to the tracking number, it will arrive tomorrow, so I will have it in the folders for you. Here is a link to a Youtube recording. 

We will also be learning the Prometheus Overture by Beethoven, and one other piece, which might be a surprise for all of us. (haha)

Please keep in mind that we might add a half hour to some of our last few rehearsals, but you will be informed via email if we do. It probably will depend on how much private practice is happening.

NUYS Upcoming Schedule

Due to the cancelled rehearsal last week, we will be extending the time of our rehearsals the next two weeks.

February 6 and 13, rehearsal will run 8:30 to 11:30. There will be a break part way through. If you need a snack, bring one (and a toothbrush for ww and brass). These next two weeks are critical as we prepare for the concert February 20 at Ogden High School. 

More info on the schedule for the day of the concert will be forthcoming.

Great Concert, Upcoming Calendar, Music Folders

The Concert was Awesome! Thanks for all your effort and hard work.

NUYS

Did you have fun? I had fun, for sure. I enjoyed getting to know you, or getting to know you better. I enjoyed making music with you, attempting to whack you (or watching you attempting to whack each other), and I especially enjoyed the good laugh you provided with your skits!

Reminder
This Saturday, November 1st (8:30 to 11:00) you are invited to wear your costumes to rehearsal, just to prolong the silliness. Sounds fun, eh? Be sure to wear something that doesn't interfere with your main job, which is playing your instrument!

Our concert is just a few weeks away. Here is a reminder of the schedule:

Saturday, November 22, Bear River High School Auditorium
11:00 am to 1:15 pm, NUYS Rehearsal
1:15 pm to 2:30 pm, NUYCO Rehearsal (flyers will be handed out this Saturday regarding food for this break)
3:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Combined Concert

Thank you for being flexible with our concert schedule! We are pleased to perform at multiple venues throughout Northern Utah, even if it means making some adjustments ahead of time.

For your calendars, our remaining concerts this year will be:

Saturday, February 21, Logan High School Auditorium (we are holding off scheduling the time in case we really like the timing of the November concert)
Monday, March 3, Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall, Salt Lake City
*Thursday, April 23, Box Elder High School Auditorium (If you have a foreseeable problem or unresolvable conflict with the Thursday concert next April, be sure to contact me asap.)

Handouts from Auditions

An information packet was handed out at auditions today with the following cover-letter, plus the papers linked-to below so you can have extra copies as needed.

Audition results will be published today via email.

If you do not receive notification, please contact Julie Gardner: info@NorthernUtahYouthSymphony.org or 435.740.4335.

Those selected to participate should:

1. Return next week for our first rehearsal (Sept 20); arrive early to help set up and get warmed up for rehearsal (which starts 8:30-11:00 am).
2. Invite your parent(s) to the Parent Meeting being held the following week after rehearsal at Promontory School, Sept 27, 11:15-12:00.
3. Read Membership Info, Rules & Policies.
4. Fill out the attached Acceptance,Release & Payment Form to be collected, with tuition, at the parent meeting.

The meeting will last no longer than 45 minutes.

Rehearsal Schedule

Greetings!

In case you missed the announcement, if you have the Ruslan and Ludmila by Glinka, do not worry about practicing it. We will play it another time. The only pieces we will be playing in the concert are the Brahms, the MacDowell, and Lord of the Dance.

Please be diligent about practicing the Academic Festival Overture by Brahms. If you haven't looked up the music and listened, you may follow this youtube link to hear it: http://youtu.be/52YCz27S7ZE. Some ideas:

1. Follow along in your music as you listen. (Active listening)

2. Just listen, over and over again, until you are really familiar with it. (passive listening -- what I'm doing right now!)

3. Practice on your own. Work on small sections. Don't try to practice the whole thing from beginning to end.

4. Set up a speaker and try playing along with the recording. (This is hard since you can't see the conductor!)

Here is the schedule for the next three weeks:

April 5, Regular Rehearsal, 8:30 to 11:00 am, Promontory School

(Tip: If you care, General Conference is rebroadcast at noon on KBYU.)

1. Mrs Horne will be there again to work with woodwinds and brass, combined.

2. I know this is Spring Break for several. Please let me know if you will be out of town, and my deepest gratitude to those who will be there! We need you if at all possible.

3. Our pianist, Josh Musselman, will be there to work on the MacDowell. Please prepare by listening to the recording, as described for the Brahms, above. Here is the link from a previous email:

April 12, Regular Rehearsal, 8:30 to 11:30 am, Promontory School

This is our last regular rehearsal before the concert. Again, the pianist will be there. LYCO will also be invited to the last part of this rehearsal to practice Lord of the Dance, so please note that we are going until 11:30.

April 19, Final Rehearsals and Concert. 

The schedule for the day will be published soon via a separate email. Please block out all afternoon, 12:30 pm till 6:30 pm.

Spring Break

One more email. {sheepish grin}

We are not taking an LYS Spring Break.

Here's why.  We draw from too many places, and this year, there is no consensus on a weekend when everyone is off.

So, do what you're planning for your spring break. Come to LYS if you can. There will be rehearsal every week. Let me know when you will be gone so we don't worry about you, and we'll see you when you're here!

Please come to as many rehearsals as possible.

Abravanel Hall (including an important form)

Greetings!

1. Abravanel Hall information and permission slips are copied and would have been handed out today, alas! 

The information for the day has been posted on the blog. Please note that we are looking for a possible volunteer driver. Also, I need some specific information from you regarding transportation needs (so I know if I need said volunteer driver).

Please go to this link and fill out the form for me. 

I need a 100% response rate; if you're not sure yet, just tell me what you know now. 

[Filling out the online form does NOT replace handing in the actual permission slip. Please be sure you fill one out! I have a paper copy of the permission slip for each musician. If you'd like to print your own so you can turn it in next week, it is attached, or you can download it at this link.]

2. Calendar: 

It has come to my attention that the original printed calendar says we are taking President's Day weekend off. Au contraire, mes amis! That is a mistake on the printed calendar. I am sorry for the mix-up. We DO HAVE REHEARSAL next weekend! The online calendar at this link is correct.

3. Ending Time: 

We will be rehearsing 8:30 to 11:30 for the next 3 weeks, unless we inform you otherwise. Thank you ahead of time for working out this change in your schedules. We would love to try Lord of the Dance & perform it at Abravanel Hall, but we are concerned about having missed today's rehearsal. 

4.  Communications: 

If anyone did not receive notification regarding the canceled rehearsal via text this morning, please reply to this email and let me know the best way to contact you. I did not have time to make several of the personal phone calls that were requested in the original participant form, and for this I am sorry! I am pretty sure that every person got some form of text message, however, so let me know if you did not receive the message so I can rectify the situation in the unlikely chance that a cancellation situation might happen again.
