Sleigh Ride! - NUYS

Greetings! 

Mr Dunn and I have decided to add a piece to our program for Dec 19. Since our concert is just a few days before Christmas, this seems appropriate. He has chosen Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson. If you've never played it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! It's joyful and fun. Something we all need right now. 

We are going to send out separate emails (by the end of today) to the different sections of the orchestra with parts to practice. We also encourage you to listen to Sleigh Ride over the next couple weeks until we can meet again for rehearsal (in addition to the other pieces for the concert: Star Wars, Broadway, Mozart and Saint-Saens).

NUYCO & NUYS Music Folder Roundup

Hi Everyone! 

It's time to round up our music folders! 

When: Monday, May 4th through Friday, May 8th (Josie, Jenny & I will pick up boxes on Saturday)

Where: Lots of places! North Logan, Hyrum, Tremonton, Honeyville, Perry, Pleasant View, Ogden and Plain City (addresses below)

Who: Everyone who has a NUYCO or NUYS folder

What: Turn in your folder to the box at one of our several locations (addresses below). 

Also: Be sure to clean out your personal or school music and only turn in the music that belongs to NUYCO & NUYS.

So we know approximately how many to expect at each location, please fill out this form.

Free Music! (again)

Hello Music Teachers! 

This is Josie Anderson; I'm the Managing Assistant for the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society. I work closely with Julie Gardner. In August, Julie and I sent an email to all of you offering a large collection of free music located in Julie's garage. Thank you to those who came, looked through the collection, and took some music home! 

There are still over 800 folders full of music left unclaimed. Please look through THIS spreadsheet; notice the tabs at the bottom. In the left tab you will see everything in one place, and in the many other tabs, I have put together separate lists by category. As music is claimed, I will update the spreadsheet with a strike-through on the music no longer available. 

Please have a look and let us know if there's anything you would like! The only thing we request is that if you claim it, we will send you an address, and you pick it up in a timely manner! Any music left unclaimed by the end of February will be advertised on KSL Classifieds or recycled.

Here's hoping that by doing this, we can give back to the music community that has supported us for so many years!

Dear Music Teachers, 

For years, we have stored (in my garage!) a large collection of band and miscellaneous music simply because we did not want to see it destroyed, but we are running out of room for our expanding youth symphony and chamber orchestra library, so it's time to clean house and make a concerted effort to give this music away. 

With that in mind, Josie, my assistant and music librarian, has spent the summer putting together a spreadsheet with all available music, just for you! Please have a look and let us know if there's anything you would like! The only thing we request is that if you claim it, we will send you an address, and you pick it up in a timely manner!

Here's hoping that by doing this, we can give back to the music community that has supported us for so many years!

Agenda for Abravanel Hall -- And Turning In Music

I failed to tell you something important!!! 

Yesterday I needed to announce that ALL music folders will be collected after tomorrow's performance. If you do not use your folder on stage, you may hand it to me before going to the green room. Having all the music tomorrow will help me so much! Please be sure to bring your folders. If you have other music (not NUYS) in your folders, take it out of the folder tonight!

And here is the rest of the stuff, which is just repetition (you should already know this) but it has been combined between both hand-outs.

Ø  10.45 a.m. Begin loading bus @ Perry Walmart 1200 South Commerce Way; Use North East corner area of the parking lot.
There will be a vehicle there to load Basses and Cellos. This will give plenty of space for people on the bus. (Thanks, Valerie Neslen, for volunteering)

Ø  11:00 a.m. Leave Perry Walmart

Ø  11:15-11:20 a.m. Pick up students in Farr West at the
Park & Ride (@ 1850 W & 2700 N, across from Maverik)

Ø  11:30-11:35 a.m. Pick up students in Riverdale at the Park & Ride on the east side of the freeway north of 5600 S; official address, 5234 S Freeway Park Road, Roy 84405

Ø  12:15 p.m. Arrive to Abravanel Hall. (The morning session does not end until 12:30, so we cannot bring instruments in to Abravanel Hall yet. Carry small instruments with you to the mall; the vehicle with the large instruments will meet us at Abravanel Hall after we eat). We will go to the food court at City Creek. Either bring a lunch, or some money for food.
No wandering off; stay in the food court!

Be back to Abravanel Hall by 1:15 p.m. Our NUYS assigned seating is in rows 17 and 19; place instruments in seats in front of you, rows 16 and 18. Large Instrument cases go in the back, in row 34. Parents: rows are 28-30 are for spectators.

Ø  1:30 p.m. American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic (with Megan Brasher!)

Ø  2:00 p.m. Davis Youth Symphony
(This is when we warm up in the Green Room.)

Ø  2:30 p.m. Northern Utah Youth Symphony performance

(This is when we have our group picture on the grand staircase.)
Bring $15 check or cash if you want to order an 8x10 picture. Make checks payable to Patrick Webster.

Ø  4:30 p.m. Load the bus. Leave Salt Lake by 4:45 p.m.

Ø  6:00 p.m. Arrive at Walmart

v  These times will depend on traffic and unforeseeable events, so we'll need to be flexible. Parents, please arrive for pick-up a few minutes early just in case, or keep in touch via cell phone.

Additional Notes:

Your job is to be the best audience you can be for the other orchestras. Stay in the auditorium and listen to the performances. No chatting. No electronic gadgets, please. Hear something you like? Write it down! Maybe we can play it sometime! We have been included with the very best youth orchestras in the state, because, well, look at us! I'm sure you will enjoy their music!

 

All performances are recorded. You want your recording to be great! Don't do anything that will affect the other recordings.

 

Clothing: Please be sure to wear the "uniform" of the orchestra. This includes a black suit coat, white shirt, and BLACK BOW TIE! Yes, men, I'm talking to you! :)

Music, Concertos, Recital, Retreat

Music

Tomorrow at rehearsal we will be handing out two new pieces and putting one on the "long term work" list. We will be performing Scheherazade on the April concert, next spring, in its entirety. That is the goal. This is a phenomenal piece of music, and we know we are capable of it, but realize the need for more time to really make it amazing.

For the November concert our pieces will be as follows (drum roll please)

William Tell Overture, Rossini

Flute Concerto in D, first movement, Mozart (Allison Francis, soloist)

Pirates of the Caribbean

Sleigh Ride, Leroy Anderson

We will keep Scheherazade and work on it throughout the year.

Recital Night

The other four musicians who participated in concerto auditions will be featured performers on our Recital Night which is set for January 30 in the Brigham City Tabernacle. The remainder of the program is open to solo and small groups of students from both orchestras. Sign ups will begin soon! 

Retreat

One note about the retreat: If you are still on the "maybe" list, please realize that this is rehearsal that weekend (actually, it's 3 rehearsals!), and if you don't have another reason to not participate, please make the effort to attend. We do have fun, we do play games, have skits, and be crazy, but we need you at rehearsal too! 

We have people that are coming to just part of it, or we have had people not spend the night and just come up Friday night and then again on Saturday (and I can let you know what the costs are for partial participation... just ask), but it's really best to attend the whole thing!

I don't know for sure how many chaperons I need until I have a specific commitment, one way or the other, from each of you.

Thanks for everything, especially your support and commitment!

Don't forget to use the the Attendance Form if you need to arrive late, leave early, or be absent. It's working very nicely. Thank you to those who have used it!

​Dress Rehearsal

The rehearsal is a​ ​"dress rehearsal​" in the sense that we are rehearsing on the stage.

You do not need to wear your concert outfit until the performance.

Call time for the rehearsal is 10:30 am. We will need all the help we can get as we set up the stage. :)

Rehearsal runs from 11 to 1:15, then we will have lunch.

Call time for the concert is 2:30.

The concert begins with NUYCO at 3:00.

Next few weeks

There is no rehearsal over Thanksgiving weekend. Our next rehearsal will be December 6 @ Promontory School.

Greetings, Great Musicians!

This is just a quick note after a wonderful season! Thanks for everyone's dedication and hard work. It was a great year. 

Be sure to let me know if you have a great idea for a new name for the orchestras.

And now, here is the list of people I still need music from. If you handed it to someone else (or to me!), please let me know who you handed it to and when, and if you might see one of the people on the list, please encourage them to get it turned in. You have no idea how grateful I am for your help in this matter! 

If you already told me what happened to your music, who you turned it in to, etc, please tell me again. Let's get it all turned in and taken care of so it can be filed and the tall piles in my dining room can be reduced! :)

Please be prepared to turn in music after the concert.

This means if you have some from other concerts, other years, other dimensions, and if it has anything to do with LYS, put it in your folder and turn it in this Saturday. 

If, however, it has nothing to do with LYS, but it has something to do with your personal music stash, or it has something to do with your school, or if you have a certificate from something in your folder, please take these types of items out of the folder before you turn it in.
