*Please Read* Announcements & Rehearsal Schedule - NUYCO

Hello families!

Please read this entire email. There is important information here for you!

Our concert is Saturday, November 14, at 2 PM at Ogden High School. If you have questions about what is happening after reading this entire email, please let me know!

Registration for the audience
We are ready for your guests to register for the concert. The limit is 4 guests per performer. You may have them register in more than one group, so if you have 2 people who are still socially distant from 2 other people, you would have them register in 2 different groups, but under your name as the performer. Each group's contact person's name will be entered on the auditorium map after that group is seated. That, combined with the registration, will constitute our contact tracing.

The reason for a limit of 4 audience members per participant came from the size of the auditorium, the number of people participating in the concert on stage, and a number of back and forth negotiations (I talked them up from 2). If you are desperate for an extra seat, we may be able to accommodate. Please mention it in the comments section of the form. If you are NOT going to use all four seats, please request only the number you will be using.

Please communicate among yourselves before registering a group.

We do not have plans to broadcast or record the concert at this point. Nearly all the pieces NUYS will be performing (exception: concertos) require licensing to live stream, and additional licensing to record. Contact me or Julie TODAY if you want to help with this effort. We would also need additional funding and a volunteer to actually do the live stream or recording. We are members of ASCAP and as such we are on the radar of the copyright people.

Adult Volunteers - 8 before, 5 after
We need 8 volunteers beforehand: 3 ushers for the main floor, 2 ushers for the balcony, and 3 check-in people in the hallway.

The 3 in the hallway will check groups in, assuring they have registered. They will each need a google sheets app on their phone. Here is the app for Android. Here is the app for iPhone.

Each usher will be responsible for a section of the auditorium to map out where each group is sitting. They will be given a clipboard with a map to mark, and they will speak with each group and write the identifying information.

All of these volunteers need to be in the building by 12:30 pm to coordinate efforts.

5 cleanup volunteers will be needed at the end to strike the stage.

They will stack chairs and stands and put everything away. It is going to be very important to do this in a timely manner as there is another event coming in right behind us.

NUYCO Arrival Time
12:00 arrive at OHS, set up, warm up
12:30 pm to 1:30 pm NUYCO Dress Rehearsal (wear your concert attire so we can take photos)
1:00 to 1:45 pm Seating of groups, as described above
2:00 to 3:15 pm Concert

Guest Arrival Time
Please instruct your guests to arrive between 1:00 and 1:30 pm, and to plan to be in their seats by 1:45 pm, 15 minutes before the 2 pm concert start time. If social distancing is impossible in the hallway, groups may have to wait patiently outside, Costco-at-the-beginning-of-the-pandemic style. Volunteers in the hall may walk up the line, checking in the groups as they arrive, for better social distancing and faster seating.

Do you think it'll work? It'll take a miracle! (JK) :)

Here is the link to the audience registration form. Please have your group(s) fill it out asap.

To volunteer as ushers, check-in people, or cleanup crew, click here and sign up on the spreadsheet.

Now, for NUYCO rehearsal information!

Rehearsal tomorrow will be at Promontory from 9:45-11:15. Just normal time, no extensions.

Two people in my (Josie) household have tested positive for COVID. Therefore, very very sadly, I will not be at rehearsal tomorrow OR the concert. :( Julie, the NUYS manager, will take my place as the viola specialist and will handle all questions and organization at Ogden High. Thank you, Julie!

Immediately following the concert, Julie will collect ALL the NUYCO folders and the music inside. If your NUYCO member will be unable to attend the concert, please let me know ASAP so Julie can get your folder beforehand. We will then take a break for November 21 and 28. Happy Thanksgiving!

Our first rehearsal of the new concert season will be December 5, same time, same place. We will rehearse on the 12th and 19th as well, take two weeks off for Christmas, and return on January 9.

You made it to the end! Hooray! 10 points to you. Best of luck to all the NUYCO members at the concert!

Schedule for the Future:
We have a few changes for the coming weeks that are different from the original schedule.
1. There will be no rehearsal November 21st, the week after the concert. There will be no rehearsal the following week for Thanksgiving.
2. In December, we will rehearse 3 weeks before taking a break: December 5, 12 and 19.
3. The break will be December 26 and January 2.
4. Our first rehearsal in January will be on the 9th.
5. Our February concert is still scheduled for February 27th. This schedule change gives us 3 weeks in a row in December, and then 8 weeks in a row after the break, including the day of the concert.

Our google calendars have been updated, and here is a link to the updated PDF Calendar for both orchestras.

You survived the fire swamp!

:)

06 March 2020

This Saturday will be different, but the same

Greetings, all ye earthlings! :)

Here are several reasons this Saturday will be different:

We are handing out new music (see below), and collecting old music (Mars, Jupiter, Narnia, anything else you still haven't turned in from your folders). Bring your folders! If you ended up with extra music after Abravanel Hall and the craziness, bring that too! A couple people had missing music after the chaos.

There will be no sectionals. We are reading new music and getting a feel for what we are planning to learn for our April 23rd concert.

We will discuss our performance at Abravanel Hall.

There will be some seating changes, especially in the strings. It's time to mix things up a bit! Look for your card to be in a different place!

We will listen to clips from the music we will be playing. For a sneak preview, here's what we're handing out:

Conus Violin Concerto - Natalie Nef's piece (This will have a large cut in it - like 300 measures - so we're not playing the whole thing)

Salute to Broadway - for the old people in the audience! Your grandparents will love it!

Star Wars Through the Years - An official recording of this is not yet available, although there's one online called the Star Wars Saga with the same sequence of music, albeit for band. So we might have to wait until tomorrow to hear it for real!

Lord of the Dance Hardiman arr Moore (to combine with Chamber) This recording has weird beeps in it because it's a sample, and then fades out half way through. Ugh. Here is a short clip of the end of Lord of the Dance when we performed it in 2014.  There are other (likely illegal) videos of it on Youtube as well.

Here are the reasons this Saturday will just be business as usual:

Doors open at 8 am, lock again at 11:30. Come help with setup! And please don't prop the door open unless you're going to unprop it too!

Rehearsal runs from 8:30 to 11:00.

Thanks again for all the people who made our performance at Abravanel Hall come together! We are proud of you!

:)

14 February 2020

This Saturday, plus several REALLY IMPORTANT announcements

Greetings!
Please read this whole email. ;)

This Saturday's Schedule
This is our last rehearsal at Promontory School for our concert! Do your VeRy BeSt to attend this rehearsal!

Mr Dunn asks that you understand that this rehearsal structure is subject to change, as needs arise.

Also, pretty please, put your phones away during rehearsal!!!!

Full Orchestra to start - First 15-20 minutes on The Planets

Lark Ascending will be next, and those who do not play may go to sectionals, as directed by your section specialists (they may have you separate or together, so just listen for their instructions)

After we work on Lark Ascending, we will go back into The Planets

Nigun will be last, about the last half hour. If you have questions about anything in that nasty handwritten music, please ask. We may be able to help you! Here is a link to Joshua Bell playing the Nigun. Please listen to this over and over until it invades your dreams. Or at least a couple times before tomorrow.

Concert Next Week

We have posters and pass-along flyers for you to take tomorrow. If you take them, don't leave them in your folder! Use them to invite people to the concert!!!

MUSIC: We will NOT collect folders after the concert (see Abravanel Hall, below), but we WILL COLLECT  all the rental music (Lark and Nigun) after the concert. And we need 100% of it back. There will be a box for it, as well as people standing around in the band room and the backstage area, begging for you to turn in that rental music!!!

If you have questions about ANYTHING, please ask!

Here is the schedule for Logan High, February 22nd:
Set Up - Noon - Let's be ready to rehearse early!
NUYS Rehearsal on Stage - 12:30 to 2:15
NUYCO Rehearsal on Stage - 2:30 to 3:30
Concert - 4:00 pm (admission is free)
Ending time - by 5:30 pm
Concert Attire
A reminder that we wear a sort of uniform called "Concert Black" which means a tux equivalent for the guys and black all over for the girls. Black socks for the guys, that are long enough to cover when they sit on stage, and black tights or stockings for the girls. This makes the sight of the orchestra much nicer. Remember that they are looking up at your ankles and knees from the audience! Here is the official concert attire description. Note that chamber's outfit is different than ours. If you need a black bow tie, now is the time to get one!

Abravanel Hall
We have our schedule for Monday, March 2nd, at Abravanel Hall! We will be playing in the afternoon session which starts at 1 pm and runs until 4:30 pm. Our performance time is LAST. We play at 4:00. Those involved in Ogden Youth Symphony play at 2:30. I will send a separate email with details; however, I wanted you to know so you can rest easy that the day has been planned.

Our bus will arrive at the Perry Walmart at 11 am, and will stop at Farr West, Venture High, and Riverdale before heading south to Salt Lake. You will be given the opportunity to sign up for the bus (or not) when all the information is published.

Announcements for Saturday, 25 January

Greetings!

Remember, we are in partnership together for a smooth running rehearsal. Please fill out the attendance form as needed, from now until the end of the year, even if I don't remind you each week.

We have 4 rehearsals before the day of the concert.

This week's rehearsal schedule:

8:30 am Sectionals
Lark Ascending Woodwinds + 2 French Horns - in the woodwind area, 8:30 to 9:15. They will join the strings at 9:15 for a 15 minute Lark Ascending rehearsal. (If you are a woodwind and don't play in Lark Ascending, you can arrive at 9:30.)

Brass - All the rest who aren't with the ww - Where you normally go, until 9:35.

Strings - all together. No separate sectionals.

Harps - in your sectional room so you can work together.

9:15 am - Lark Ascending for 20 minutes.

9:35 am - Planets

10:30 am - Nigun - Rebecca will be out of town next week, so this needs to be a good one! Mr Dunn met with her this week and we expect this to be a very productive rehearsal.

11:00 am - head home and have a great weekend!

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the readers of this email. Everything runs more smoothly when we're all on the same page.

10 January 2020

NUYS Announcements for 11 January 2020

Greetings!

Please read all the announcements this week. There are some differences from previous weeks.

Rehearsal Schedule
8:30 - Sectionals - come early to set up so sectionals can start on time

Woodwinds & Brass in their regular locations (WW right hallway, to the left and Brass left hallway to the right)

Strings separate at 8:30, then combined in the gym at 9:15
Violin 1 on stage, Violin 2 across from WW, Viola in entry hall, Cellos in gym, Basses by the art room, Harps in the same room as last week

9:30 - Lark Ascending Rehearsal
This leaves a group of people out in the hall, or continuing to practice, but Chamber sectionals take precedence for space, so you might need to bring UNO cards! Harps can stay in their area during this time. Doing Lark Ascending early will help Mr Dunn endure the rehearsal. Last time the conducting wore him out! He thanks you all for your kind patience in this matter.

9:55 - Planets

9:40 - Nigun (2nd movement) from Baal Shem
This is the new piece that will be handed out tomorrow. Rebecca Hales will be our soloist. The score does not include trombones or tuba, (but there is a harp part!) so although you have to wait through Lark Ascending, we will not make you wait through this one.

A note about the music: It is a rental and the sheet music must be safeguarded with great care. Especially keep it from being crumpled or exposed to food, and any marks must be in pencil and be very neat and tidy!

Homework - Very Important
Please go to the following Youtube links before rehearsal and watch so you are familiar with the music. This will make or break our time on this piece tomorrow!
This is the Nigun performed by Itzhak Perlman with piano accompaniment. Totally worth your time!

Saturday, February 22nd, Concert at Logan High
Last call for any conflicts or concerns about setting the time for 4 pm. We will be setting the rest of the dress rehearsal schedule this week!

Recital Night
Our recital is tomorrow night, 6:30 pm in the Brigham City Tabernacle. For performers to warm up or run short bits with their accompanist, I will be there to facilitate that at 5:30.

Our program will be as follows:

Utah Symphony All-Star Concert FYI
Each year when we perform at the Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall (which will be March 2nd this year), we qualify to nominate some of our musicians to perform side-by-side with the Utah Symphony in a special concert designed specifically for them. Due to some scheduling difficulties, this year's concert will be much earlier than in previous years. The date is Thursday, March 19th. The rehearsals will begin 4 weeks prior to the event, which means those who participate will be already rehearsing before we go to Abravanel Hall for the festival that qualifies us to participate. This will only apply to a small number of players, generally seniors, but I wanted to make sure you knew about it, especially because of the changes that have been made. I will be attending the meeting in Salt Lake this afternoon to find out who we can nominate.

Announcements for Tomorrow's Rehearsal and PARTY (January 4th)

Greetings! Welcome to 2020!

Recruiting
If you have friends, especially those who play violin or viola, we'd love to have them come play along at our rehearsal this Saturday. Reply to this email and let me know if this might be happening so we don't have too many surprises! Friends are also welcome to stay for the party!

Food for the Party
This Saturdaypotluck food for the party should be dropped off when you arrive in the hall. There will be a table provided, so the set up people know what they have to work with.

This Saturday's rehearsal schedule will be as follows:
Sectionals 8:30 to 9:25
Strings - Go straight to separate sections at the beginning. Come back to the gym for full string sectional by 9:15.
Violin 1 on the stage
Violin 2 across from the woodwinds
Viola in the entrance hall
Cello in the gym
Bass in the hall by the art room
Woodwinds - down the right hall to the left
Brass - down the left hall to the right
Harps - I will assign you a space upon arrival where you can practice together

Full rehearsal beginning at 9:30 - Jupiter, then Mars

Lark Ascending at about 10:30

NEW DECADE Party at 11:00. We will start with food, then the White Elephant Gift Exchange. Keep it under $5. Extra kudos for music related items.

A note about repertoire:
The concert on February 22nd will be Jupiter, Mars, The Lark Ascending, and one other piece (Rebecca's concerto - a rental piece arriving in January). We have Lark Ascending additional parts (if you didn't get one - Bassoons, Basses, maybe others) to hand out tomorrow.

Baal-Shem (Rebecca Hale's piece) is in the mail. I received shipping notice today. We will be handing it out next week. (Narnia too. See below.)

We will also be handing out Narnia in January to add to our program for Abravanel Hall, March 2nd, so we will play Mars, Jupiter and Narnia for that performance.

Recital
The recital is scheduled for NEXT WEEK, January 11th, at 6:30 pm in the Brigham City Tabernacle. We currently have only 7 people signed up. We would like at least 3 more. PLEASE, if you have a piece to perform, as a solo or ensemble/duet, hit reply on this email and let me know! This is a great opportunity to perform!

My current list is: Jacob Rockwood on piano, Archer Crawford on oboe, Talmage Kay on viola, Alexis Jensen on oboe, Dallin Murrow on cello, Kristene Murrow on violin, and Emily Rockwood on violin. If you signed up and I missed putting you on this list, please let me know so I can add you. If you want to participate, the deadline for signing up is this Sunday, January 5th. Thanks!

Upcoming Schedule
7 rehearsals until the next concert: January 4, 11, 18, 25; February 1, 8, 15

Concert is February 22. The time is not yet set, but I've had several ask for 4 pm. Please reply if you have concerns about this time!
