NUYCO - See you tomorrow!

 Hi families!

Woohoo, rehearsals start tomorrow! We are so excited to start our new year. If you would like to get to know the specialists, Mr. West (our conductor), and me, check out this document with bios and photos!

LOCATION: Promontory School Library, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry (the library is right across the hall from the gym where NUYS will be rehearsing - follow the music and you will find us!), 9:30 - 11:00 AM (NUYS will meet 8:30-11). You are welcome to bring your own music stand but we will have one set up for you already. No food or drink (besides water) is allowed in the library.

MUSIC: For this concert, we will be playing the Italian Folk Festival arr. Bullock and Abduction from the Seraglio by Mozart. Mr. West will be deciding on a 3rd piece in the near future!

RECRUITMENT: Please recruit more members! We could really use more violas especially, but would gratefully accept any instrument. NUYS could also use basically any instrument!

PARENT MEETING: Our parent meeting Forum and Q&A is next week, Sept. 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also to collect tuition. You are welcome to turn in forms and payments tomorrow if that is more convenient.

ATTENDANCE: If you will be missing a rehearsal anytime between tomorrow and April, please fill out our handy Attendance Form! It's linked at the bottom of all my emails. If you are sick for any reason at any time, please fill out the form and stay home. 

CONCERT: Our first concert will be Friday, November 12, at Ogden High School. Yes, Friday - check your calendars. If you have a conflict, please tell me what time would work best for you to perform. The concerts at Ogden High are always my favorite - it's an amazing venue and you don't want to miss it! Please keep Thursday, November 11, open as well. We may need an extra rehearsal that evening to prepare for the concert the next day.

At long last, rehearsals begin tomorrow! So excited to see everyone. This is the part that makes it all worth it.

Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed 

This link is for the concert band version. I assure you we will be playing the full orchestra version. If anyone finds a recording of the full orchestra version, please share the link with me! Such a cool piece!

Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saens. We will be playing the first movement, which is roughly 8 1/2 minutes in this version.

Congrats to Hugues Herpin Lemonnier, our soloist!

Set up

When you arrive, music stands will be set up for you - your folders will be on your stands. 

If you can come early to set up chairs, please do. The computerized doors will unlock at 8 am, and I will be there [much] earlier, just getting everything ready.

Parent Meeting

Reminder that our parent meeting Forum and Q&A will be next week, Sept 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also, to collect tuition. You may also turn in forms and payments at tomorrow's rehearsal, if that works better for you.

Recruiting

Recruit your friends! You don't really want me playing viola with you. Really. What happened to all the violas? There were so many last year!  We need another Clarinet, 3 more French Horns, 2 more Trumpets, and another Trombone.... And more cellos. We would even accept more violins... 😉

Attendance

If you are playing in a Marching Band, or in a Pit Orchestra, or on a Swim Team, or you already know when that family wedding is going to be, I need you to go into the Attendance Form and fill it out multiple times for all the times you will be missing. 

I know there are more people that need to do this. After you submit for one date, it will ask you if you would like to submit another form. It's pretty easy and will give us a better picture of what rehearsals are going to look like. Thanks so much!

If you are sick for any reason (not just COVID symptoms), or you've been quarantined, the attendance form is also the best way to let me know. The system notifies me immediately when someone fills out the form, so you can even fill it out tomorrow morning if you wake up feeling ill. 

Concert - Important!!!!

Our first concert will be Friday, 12 November, 2021 at Ogden High. Yes, you read that correctly. It's on a Friday. Please Please Please check calendars and get back with me so we can set a time when everyone can be there to perform! I promise you it's worth it to work this out. It's such a beautiful venue!

Please keep Thursday 11 November open as well, and let us know if evening or earlier would work for you. We are anticipating the need for an extra rehearsal that day so we have a good feeling of momentum going into the Friday concert. Ask your band teachers, etc. It is Veteran's Day and there may be issues with rehearsal time, so let's work together to pick the best time.

Announcements & Rehearsal Schedule - NUYS

This one's super important... Please read to the end. 

Registration for the audience

We are ready for your guests to register for the concert. The limit is 4 guests per performer. You may have them register in more than one group, so if you have 2 people who are still socially distant from 2 other people, you would have them register in 2 different groups, but under your name as the performer. Each group's contact person's name will be entered on the auditorium map after that group is seated. That, combined with the registration, will constitute our contact tracing. 

Adult Volunteers - 8 before, 5 after

In addition to registering the audience online, ahead of time, we need 8 volunteers beforehand: 3 ushers for the main floor, 2 ushers for the balcony, and 3 check-in people in the hallway. 

The 3 in the hallway will check groups in, assuring they have registered. They will each need a google sheets app on their phone. Here is the app for Android. Here is the app for iPhone.

Each usher will be responsible for a section of the auditorium to map out where each group is sitting. They will be given a clipboard with a map to mark, and they will speak with each group and write the identifying information. 

All of these volunteers need to be in the building by 12:30 pm to coordinate efforts. 

5 cleanup volunteers will be needed at the end to strike the stage. 

They will stack chairs and stands, and put everything away. It is going to be very important to do this in a timely manner as there is another event coming in right behind us. 

Guest Arrival Time

Please instruct your guests to arrive between 1:00 and 1:30 pm, and to plan to be in their seats by 1:45 pm, 15 minutes before the 2 pm concert start time. If social distancing is impossible in the hallway, groups may have to wait patiently outside, Costco-at-the-beginning-of-the-pandemic style. Volunteers in the hall may walk up the line, checking in the groups as they arrive, for better social distancing and faster seating. 

Do you think it'll work? It'll take a miracle! (JK) 😉

Now, for the good stuff...

Please note that there are staggered arrival times this week. Some will prepare to play by 8:30, some by 9:00 and some by 9:30. These are not arrival times. These are times to be warmed up and in your seats ready to play. Some of the times are approximate, so plan to arrive early and stay late! Who knows what will happen!

This Saturday's rehearsal schedule will most likely work out as follows:

8:00 am Doors Unlock - Setup

8:20 am Find your seat, prepare for rehearsal

8:30 am Mozart people (strings, flutes, horns, Elizabeth) in the Gym to work on clarinet concerto glitched

9:00 am  Saint-Saens people in the Gym to work on cello concerto glitches

9:30 am Full orchestra for Star Wars and Broadway

10:30 am Saint-Saens and Mozart run-throughs, in that order

11:00 am Clean up

11:30 am Doors lock

Schedule for the Future:

We have a few changes for the coming weeks that are different from the original schedule.

1. There will be no rehearsal November 21st, the week after the concert. There will be no rehearsal the following week for Thanksgiving.

2. In December, we will rehearse 3 weeks before taking a break: December 5, 12 and 19. 

3. The break will be December 26 and January 2.

4. Our first rehearsal in January will be on the 9th.

5. Our February concert is still scheduled for February 27th. This schedule change gives us 3 weeks in a row in December, and then 8 weeks in a row after the break, including the day of the concert.

Tomorrow's rehearsal is "on" - NUYS

Tomorrow's rehearsal is on, as described in the email yesterday, except for the food sharing at the end. That, being unnecessary, is canceled. 

Costumes? Sure! It's Halloween, after all.

Same rules are in effect: If you are sick or have been quarantined, or you are aware you have come into contact with the coronavirus, fill out the attendance form and STAY HOME. 

Concert in 2 weeks! So let it be written, so let it be done!

Retreat 2020 Survey and Rehearsal Announcements - NUYS

Greetings! 

This Saturday's rehearsal has a slightly different schedule. Please note that we are starting a half hour early, and ending early, at 10 am.

Here is the plan: 

7:30 am, doors open

7:50 am, prepare for sectionals, start warming up

8:00 am, sectionals (including strings)

8:35 am, head back to the gym

8:40 am, full rehearsal - Pieces with larger instrumentation first, ending with the Cello Concerto. 

Keep working on the Mozart Clarinet Concerto at home and ask questions in sectionals. We will work on that piece next week. Wieniawski is in your folder to work on individually. 

10:00 am, rehearsal ends

10:30 am, doors lock

Calendar heads-up: We have a firm date for our February concert, on the 27th, at Mount Logan Middle School. and.... We have a "tentative" date for the April concert. (Tentative in quotes because they are not officially scheduling the auditorium for April yet, but when (hopefully) they do, this will be our date.) It's Thursday, April 29. :)

Retreat 2020 Survey

Our retreat has been a highlight yearly since 2010. It usually runs for 24 hours, and this year is scheduled from 5 pm on Friday, October 23, to 5 pm on Saturday, October 24, which enables people to drive to and from the camp's remote location in the daylight. Camp UTABA http://camputaba.org/ is in the north end of the Ogden Valley. Map link: https://goo.gl/maps/aDceY9efPnWPjYwt8 At Camp UTABA, they cook for us and we make music. We gather Friday, have dinner, a rehearsal, and play get-to-know-you games, then sleep in cabins. On Saturday, we have breakfast, a rehearsal, skits, lunch, a cleaning session, another rehearsal, and then a final sweep up before heading home. Included are several well-loved outdoor activities: Carpet Ball, a Giant See-saw thing with springs under the center, and, of course, the great outdoors. This year, the camp hosts have been working closely with the Weber County Health Department. Several bunk beds have been removed from each cabin to reduce cabin capacity and enable social distancing, but they still have room for us because of the smaller orchestra this year. The lodge where we dine and rehearse, however, does not give us the same amount of space for physical distancing that we are getting used to in the gym at Promontory School, and the get-to-know-you games may need to be changed and / or moved outdoors (for those of you who have been before, we're not sure about whack 'em - might need to play some outdoor night games instead - suggestions welcome). So, be sure to bring a coat! The chance to get to know each other and make music together in this lovely setting with the beavers, moose, and other wildlife (sometimes skunks), has been a beloved kickoff for our season over the past decade. We would dearly love this activity to happen, but we need to know your thoughts and intentions in regard to running it. Our date is roughly 3 weeks from now, and we need to make a decision by Monday, Oct 5. This survey is to find out who would be committed to participating in the retreat this year, or what your level of interest is in an alternate activity. The cost is minimal. We just pass the money on to the camp. Total cost is $55. If you don't spend the night, but eat the meals, it's $30. Meals average out to be $10 each. If we only go for Saturday we may choose to eat 3 meals, so the tentative cost would be $30. If you are on a scholarship, please understand that the scholarship does not cover the retreat. Saturday's Rehearsal Schedule - January 18th

This week, I was planning to put in a plug for using the attendance form, and then I sent out the little email a couple hours ago asking for just that, and got half a dozen immediate responses! Thanks! 

I just want you to know how much it helps me when I'm setting up the orchestra to have that spreadsheet that shows me who's not coming! Thank you to all who use it to let me know when you will be gone. There is a link in the signature to every email I send out, as well as a link on the tabs (or menu, on a phone) on the website. 

If you know you will be missing rehearsals anytime between now and the end of the year, you can fill it out for future dates. That also helps when we are planning ahead for sectionals or special guests (which happens once in a while)! 

We are proud of having people from our orchestra participate in All-State, and other things, but we need you in partnership - by filling out the attendance form - to make sure rehearsals run smoothly, as planned, and there are no surprises with key people missing or sections decimated!

Music Stand Conundrum

If possible, for sectionals, please use the music stands set up for you in the gym. When you grab stands from the cart in the hall, the chamber orchestra ends up not having enough when they set up. You should see the wild look of panic in their eyes when there are no more stands! ;)

Rehearsal Schedule for this Saturday, January 18th

Sectionals - starting at 8:30

Strings, separate sectionals at 8:30 for about 20-25 minutes or until Mr Dunn comes to get you, then full string group in the gym - you know where to go. Firsts on stage, Seconds across from the ww, violas in the hall, cellos in the gym, basses by the art room.

Harps - in the room where you practiced before, until 9:45

WW and Brass - Sectionals until 9:15, then all Lark Ascending people to the full orchestra. WW and Brass who do not play in Lark Ascending may continue sectional until 9:45 (or whatever your section specialist chooses for you). 

WELCOME and THANK YOU to Mrs Erickson who will be filling in for Andrew Watkins this Saturday! She plays French Horn and teaches at BRHS.

Full Lark Ascending Orchestra - 9:15 to 9:45

Planets - 9:45 to about 10:30

Nigun from Baal Shem - About 10:30 until 11:00

The concert will be February 22nd at Logan High School. Here is the schedule. (There will not be any morning rehearsal that day.)
