NUYS Tour: Fudge Fundraiser Information

Dear Parents & Symphony Members:

You may have seen our little fudge stand at the concert on Saturday.  If you didn't, you missed out on some free samples of the yummy fundraiser we are starting this week.

We sold individual 1/4 pound pieces at the concert to introduce everyone to the fudge.  You will actually be selling 1 and 2 pound gift boxes.  Everybody loves fudge, so spread the word to family and friends and let them know they can get their fudge just in time for Easter.

All orders and money are due at rehearsal on March 18th.  I will be there to collect money and orders.

Links below give you access to all of the information you will need to get started.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me directly, wkfinley2973@gmail.com

Good Luck!!

Extra Announcements and FAQ

Greetings!

This is going to be a great concert! Be sure to invite all your peeps, and tell them it's FREE because of the generous sponsorship of Vesta Real Estate. :)

1. Tour
The tour company has only just sent out the packets for those who signed up. The next payment is due March 1st, and they said they will "understand" if that payment is late since they were late sending out the packets.

2. Abravanel Hall
Here is the info sheet and permission slip. These will also be available to students during rehearsal before the concert this Saturday.

If you attend Venture High and would like the bus to stop there in addition to (or instead of) the Park and Ride at 2700 N, please indicate that on your permission slip. We will probably have the bus driver pull off there as well. Lisa Aedo will be collecting permission slips this Saturday, or you can bring it next week, March 4. Be sure to mark the boxes of what you are doing, or I will give it back! :)

3. Music
Be prepared to turn in your Arutunian Trumpet Concerto music after (or before if you're not using it on stage) the performance this Saturday. It will be collected as you leave the stage. KEEP your folder!

4. Setup
Be at the school at noon to help set up, and don't just go get your instrument out; make yourself available to help set up!

I hope that's everything I needed to tell you.

Break a finger or a lip! You will be awesome. And sit up straight. And wear a BLACK Bow Tie! And Black Socks/Tights! And Smile! Make it look like you're having the time of your life on stage! And make sure you face the audience when you stand up. Ya Know. Stuff like that! You can DO this!

:)

NUYS Extra

Abravanel Hall Schedule

The schedule for Abravanel Hall, March 13, 2017, has arrived! We will be participating in the afternoon session, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Our performance time is at 3:30 pm. The Ogden Youth Symphony (which some of our students participate in) is performing at 2:30.

I have printed the permission slips and information sheet, which will be handed out tomorrow. Here is a copy (attached) in case you want to fill it out tonight and turn it in tomorrow. All permission slips (with the boxes marked so I know what your plans are) are due no later than March 4.

Gala Celebration: Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction, March 18, 2017

To celebrate 4 weeks until the Gala, we will be doing a drawing for silent auction basket themes tomorrow during break, and below I have included a link to the Silent Auction Collaboration. It's a fully editable spreadsheet where you can share who you have talked to - or are planning to talk to - for silent auction donations. You should at least click the link and see where I've applied so far. :)

Here is a letter you can use to beg for donations. :) It includes an option to request a donation for an "auxiliary auction" to take place at our April 25 season finale concert (in case we have passed someone's deadline for donations by March 18).

Thanks ahead of time!

See y'all tomorrow!

To Whom It May Concern:

______________________________ is a member of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony, which will be performing in the Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City on March 13, 2017. The bus leaves Perry at 11:15 a.m., Farr West at 11:30 a.m., and Riverdale at 11:45 a.m., returning between 5:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Playing in a symphony orchestra is the ultimate team sport. Each person is extremely important to the overall sound of the orchestra, especially in a place like Abravanel Hall where the acoustics pick up everything that's there – and amplify everything that's missing.  Please excuse this student from his/her classes on that day.

Sincerely,

Julie Gardner, 435.740.4335 cell

Ogden High School Parking Details for Feb 25

In the map below, the orange areas are places you can park. The parking closest to the auditorium is on the south side of the building, but it's cramped and not easy to turn around. The parking lot on the northeast part of the lot is better, and you can walk through the courtyard and enter the building where I drew the arrows. If you can't find parking in either of those two lots, park on a side street, either 28th Street or Tyler Ave. There is no parking on Harrison, except in that pullout area. It is a city school. You will want to leave plenty of time for parking.

Midwinter Showcase Press Release

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra will be presenting their concert "Midwinter Showcase" February 25, 2017, at 4:00 pm at the beautiful Ogden High School Auditorium, 2828 Harrison Blvd. This free concert (thanks to Vista Real Estate, Ogden) features musicians from over 30 schools all over Northern Utah, including Weber, Davis, Box Elder, Cache and Bear Lake (ID) counties.

The 35-member strings only Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Nathan West, will open the concert with Allegro, Air and Hornpipe from Handel's Water Music, followed by Adagio Cantabile from Beethoven's "Pathetique" Sonata, and Offenbach's Finale from Orpheus in the Underworld.

The 89-member Youth Symphony, under the direction of Conrad Dunn, will then take the stage. They will begin their program with Sibelius' Finlandia. This concert will also feature a member of the orchestra, a winner of our annual Concerto Competition, as concerto soloist. Drew Burnett will perform Arutunian's Trumpet Concerto. The concluding piece will be the exciting 4th Movement of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony.

Drew Burnett
Drew Burnett, a junior at Venture High School, has always had a love for music.  He started piano lessons at the age of six and a few years later began playing the violin.  He was accepted into Venture Academy Charter School his 7th grade year, but they didn't have an orchestra program, so, out of a desire to participate in the music program there, he joined the percussion section of the band.  After playing percussion for a year, he realized that the trumpet was the instrument he was really meant to play, so he practiced relentlessly at home the second half of his 7th grade year so he could catch up and join the trumpet section in 8th grade ...and he never stopped practicing.  He currently studies trumpet with Peggy Wilson in Pleasant View.
Drew has participated twice with the Tri-State Wind Ensemble at Utah State, the Honor Band at Weber State, and this year was accepted into the All-State Band.  This is Drew's second year with Northern Utah Youth Symphony.
Drew is a dedicated student and a member of the National Honor Society.  He enjoys volunteering at the Weber County Animal Shelter, working at Kneaders, and participating in the Venture High Drama program.

The Arutunian Trumpet Concerto rental music is sponsored in part by Advanced Vision & Wellness Clinic, Family Mentoring Foundation, MargieChadburn.com, and Reed & Carole Burnett.

Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to classical music in the Northern Utah area. The Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is sustained by a grant from the George S. and Dolores DorĂ© Eccles Foundation and an annual LBSS Gala Fundraiser Dinner & Silent Auction. They are also funded by individual donors, parents, grandparents, and employee gift matching from Autoliv. LBSS is also supported by Box Elder County Tourism.

In addition, this project is supported in part by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Thank you, Vesta Real Estate!

Important Announcement -- February 25 Concert

Greetings!

Time Change for February 25 Concert
Our upcoming concert on February 25 has been rescheduled for 4:00 pm. This is to try to make it possible for Speech & Debate students who have regional tournament that day to hopefully make it (NUYS will play after NUYCO). We couldn't set the concert any later because BRHS has pit orchestra that night; we have set the time early enough so those students can make their call time in Garland.

Therefore, the February 25 schedule will be:

12:00 pm NUYS Arrival and Setup
No later than 12:30 pm NUYS Rehearsal
No later than 2:30 pm NUYCO Rehearsal
No later than 3:30 pm Call Time
4:00 to 5:30 pm Concert
6:00 Building Clear

Location: Ogden High. I will send you a map (closer to the date) of where best to park, etc. For those who haven't been to this auditorium before, you're in for a great experience! It's a piece of history!

I will be sending the press release today, and create a facebook event as well.

Concert Day Extra Help Needed!!!!
I have just found out that my brother is getting married on February 25, right in the middle of our dress rehearsal. This means that I will not be at the rehearsal or concert.

I need volunteers to help with set-up according to a map of the stage, percussion & music stand unloading and loading (I can have my family load it in a borrowed van ahead of time), collecting rental music after the performance (VERY important), putting chairs back into the right rooms at the school, sorting stands so Ogden High keeps their stands and we keep ours, walking through the auditorium and picking up programs people leave, and just making sure everything runs smoothly.

This is a test of my management skills. It's a lot harder to miss a concert than to just go and do what I do! Anyone willing to help may contact me separately, or just reply to this email. THANK YOU ahead of time.

Gala Dinner Note
Our annual Gala Fundraiser Dinner is coming up March 18 at 6 pm. We will kick off ticket sales soon, and we will begin collecting items for silent auction baskets, as well as requesting donations for the silent auction from businesses etc.
