This Saturday - Rehearsal and Activity - NUYS

Greetings!

This Saturday is going to be great!

We will start as normal with our rehearsal, but there will be T-Shirts ready for you, and we encourage you to put them on (over whatever you are wearing, or go change into them but don't leave clothing in the bathrooms). We will be taking group pictures with Tshirts after rehearsal. 

We don't expect the weather to be warm, so the pictures (with instruments) will likely be indoors, but be alert for instructions!

We will then share snacks 

This is POT LUCK! If you bring a snack, be sure it's individually wrapped to keep everyone safe. I will be bringing something homemade and individually wrapped too! There are nearly 60 people in the orchestra. 

After snacks, we will have get-to-know-you activities headed up by Andrew Watkins (our brass specialist). 

Expect the activity to end between 12:15 and 12:30.

Here's the agenda:

 

8:00 Doors Unlock, come early to help set up! The shirt you chose will be labeled and on your chair

8:20 Warm up, prepare for sectionals

8:30 Sectionals as follows: 

String sectionals, all together in the gym, focus on concertos

Woodwinds and brass in their regular areas

9:15 Head for full rehearsal

9:20 Full rehearsal, ending with Star Wars (so our Harpist can come later and stay for the party)

11:00 Activities:

Picture with instruments

Then: Put away instruments, clean up rehearsal, share snacks

Then: Get-to-know-you games

About 12:15 or 12:30 Expect activities to end

12:30 Doors lock

YES there is rehearsal on Halloween, and you are welcome to wear a costume, if you like. There will be a short social opportunity on October 31st as well. 

I know this Saturday is the ACT. If you are taking the ACT, or if you are going to be absent for any other reason (sickness, quarantine, etc), please use my favorite form.... Link below.

Saturday's Rehearsal - NUYCO

Hi Families! Here is some important info about Saturday, written just for you!

Masks: All participants, youth and adult, are required to wear a mask that at least covers the mouth for the entire rehearsal. Thanks for helping us out with that!

Practice spots: Mr. West would like the following sections of each piece to be well-practiced by Saturday.

Mask of Zorro - review first half, concentrate on m. 108 - end (Violin 1 should look over mm. 121-133 for position work; Bass and cello mm. 142 - end). Violin 1 - attached is a file with the fingerings Mr. West has asked that you use!

Fun Rehearsal Day: This Saturday's schedule will look a little different! It will last for two full hours, from 9:45 to 11:45 AM. Here's the rundown...

9:45-11:15: rehearsal like normal. Come early so we can start on time! You're welcome to bring a snack to eat in break time.

11:15-11:45: We will play a get-to-know-you game, watch a couple of clips from the legendary The Mask of Zorro movie, hand out NUYCO T-shirts, and take a group picture! All section specialists are, of course, invited to stay for all activities.

Attendance Form: Please, please, please fill out the attendance form if you will not be attending rehearsal. It might not seem like a big deal, but when we have less than 15 total members, it's really important for us to know if five of them will be gone. Mr. West needs to plan rehearsals, which he cannot do adequately if we don't know who will be there. I'm going to steal a page out of Julie's (NUYS) book and link the attendance form at the bottom of every email. That way you have easy access to it! :)

Thanks for helping us offer this opportunity for these kids. We sure love getting to know them!

Announcements for Tomorrow's Rehearsal and PARTY (January 4th)

Greetings! Welcome to 2020!

Recruiting

If you have friends, especially those who play violin or viola, we'd love to have them come play along at our rehearsal this Saturday. Reply to this email and let me know if this might be happening so we don't have too many surprises! Friends are also welcome to stay for the party!

Food for the Party

This Saturday, potluck food for the party should be dropped off when you arrive in the hall. There will be a table provided, so the set up people know what they have to work with. 

This Saturday's rehearsal schedule will be as follows:

Sectionals 8:30 to 9:25

Strings - Go straight to separate sections at the beginning. Come back to the gym for full string sectional by 9:15.

Violin 1 on the stage

Violin 2 across from the woodwinds

Viola in the entrance hall

Cello in the gym

Bass in the hall by the art room

Woodwinds - down the right hall to the left

Brass - down the left hall to the right

Harps - I will assign you a space upon arrival where you can practice together

Full rehearsal beginning at 9:30 - Jupiter, then Mars

Lark Ascending at about 10:30

NEW DECADE Party at 11:00. We will start with food, then the White Elephant Gift Exchange. Keep it under $5. Extra kudos for music related items.

A note about repertoire: 

The concert on February 22nd will be Jupiter, Mars, The Lark Ascending, and one other piece (Rebecca's concerto - a rental piece arriving in January). We have Lark Ascending additional parts (if you didn't get one - Bassoons, Basses, maybe others) to hand out tomorrow. 

Baal-Shem (Rebecca Hale's piece) is in the mail. I received shipping notice today. We will be handing it out next week. (Narnia too. See below.)

We will also be handing out Narnia in January to add to our program for Abravanel Hall, March 2nd, so we will play Mars, Jupiter and Narnia for that performance.

Recital

The recital is scheduled for NEXT WEEK, January 11th, at 6:30 pm in the Brigham City Tabernacle. We currently have only 7 people signed up. We would like at least 3 more. PLEASE, if you have a piece to perform, as a solo or ensemble/duet, hit reply on this email and let me know! This is a great opportunity to perform! 

My current list is: Jacob Rockwood on piano, Archer Crawford on oboe, Talmage Kay on viola, Alexis Jensen on oboe, Dallin Murrow on cello, Kristene Murrow on violin, and Emily Rockwood on violin. If you signed up and I missed putting you on this list, please let me know so I can add you. If you want to participate, the deadline for signing up is this Sunday, January 5th. Thanks!

Upcoming Schedule

7 rehearsals until the next concert: January 4, 11, 18, 25; February 1, 8, 15

Concert is February 22. The time is not yet set, but I've had several ask for 4 pm. Please reply if you have concerns about this time!

NUYS & NUYCO - Our Christmas Party has been rescheduled to January 4th, after rehearsal.

Chamber CHRISTMAS PARTY

Christmas Party information and call for helpers

Our Christmas party is next week, December 16, right after regular rehearsal. Thank you to the one parent who already signed up to help!

We need more help:

People to commit to bringing something with protein. Otherwise it will be a sugar fest. The treats will be pot luck, so we need people to sign up to bring something with less sugar & more protein. Cheese & Crackers, a crockpot of meat balls, etc. 

People to help set up the lovely table and lay out the food. Doris brings supplies. We just need you to come help out! Helpers should arrive at 10 am.

People to commit to being around to take down and clean up. Helpers should be needed for this project around 12:30 pm.

Please visit the Volunteer Collaboration and let us know how you can help out. The Christmas party sign up is in the bottom right section. If you try to sing up and it isn't cooperating, just shoot me an email. I'll add you to the list. (This is a symphony spreadsheet but go ahead and sign up for the party on is, as it is a joint chamber/symphony party.)

Greetings! 

Reminder: 

All-Star concert, tonight, 7pm, at Abravanel Hall. Plenty of tickets at the door. A most inspiring concert, including Krystell, Clay, Josh, Travis and Garrett! You will love it. :)

Party Announcement

Greetings, Fantastic Folks!

The consensus is that there are a lot of conflicts this coming weekend, and I am choosing to postpone our party because I want as many people to come as possible. We like each other and want to see each other again, right?

I have looked at everyone's school district calendar. Aside from Box Elder and DaVinci, everyone is out of school by the weekend after Memorial Day, and I am scheduling our party Saturday May 30. I am aware that this may cut into some people's family vacations or camps, but I just couldn't see putting on a party when all of the options I sent before had so few people who could come.

So, SAVE THE DATE: 

NUYS and NUYCO End of Year Party

Saturday, May 30

Noon until we are tired

At my house, 2800 S 1200 W, Perry 

(although I may move it to a park, so keep checking your email!)

More details to follow! If you have a suggestion for the perfect park that is somewhat central to where people come from, let me know.

Party Date -- Please Reply

Hello all ye wonderful people!

The 9th of May is the State Orchestra Festival, so it may pose a serious problem in regards to the original date for the party, for those who may be attending, and we want as many people as possible to come.

I have chosen a couple other options.

Please reply with "all options work for me" or tell me which ones do not work.

Option 1: Saturday, May 9th, 11am to 2pm (as originally announced)

Option 2: Saturday, May 9th, Evening (if you have limits, tell them to me)

Option 3: Friday, May 8th, Evening (again, if you have limits, tell them to me)

The following weekend is problematic, and the week after that is Memorial Day weekend, so that's out as well.

Did You See the White Elephant?

Did anyone see the white elephant? I didn't, but we're having one this Saturday after rehearsal. 

Mr Dunn said he'd let us out early; plan to stay till at least 11:30. 

Bring a treat to share.

The White Elephant rules are: 

1. It should be wrapped.
2. Don't spend ANY money.
3. It should be something from around the house.
4. Keep it simple.
5. Try to be funny.

Mr Blanchard ran our first winds & brass sectional last Saturday and it went very well! Winds and Brass should plan on that sectional every week, right at the beginning of the rehearsal, unless otherwise notified!

We will be running string sectionals as well, so be ready with questions.

If you missed last Saturday, I still have your TShirt, unless a friend brought it to you. They look awesome! A gift from us to you: Merry Christmas!

You should now have the following pieces in your folders:

End of Year Party

Saturday, April 19^th

 

Between the Dress Rehearsal & Concert

LYS:  About 3:00 ¯ LYCO:  About 4:00 (or earlier)

Where: Pavilion behind the church @ 660 North 300 East

(down the street from the school within walking distance)

Bring your favorite potluck dish to share. 

Strings:  Picnic Side Dish (appetizer, salads, chips, fruit, veggies)

Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion:  Desserts (cakes, brownies, treats)

LYCO: Any of the above! (Side Dish or Dessert)

(If your item needs refrigeration, please bring it in a cooler.) 

We will supply whack ‘em noodle, drinks and service items.

Bring your picnic items with you following your dress rehearsal. 

There is only a short time between dress rehearsals and the concert. 

Please quickly pack up from dress rehearsal, leave instruments at the school, and walk even more quickly down to the park.

All musicians will need to return to the school at 4:30!

End of Season Party

Greetings!

As usual, the end of our LYS season has jumped up and surprised me!

We need to plan a party, and have less than two weeks to do it. 

Our final concert will be at Bear River High School in Tremonton (I will send out the schedule for the day in a separate email). The concert will be April 19th at 5 pm, and will be over by 6:30pm. 

Is there anyone in the Garland/Tremonton area that would be willing to host a few dozen (5 or 6) youth symphony (LYS) and chamber orchestra (LYCO) kids for a bring-a-treat to share end-of-season party from 7ish until 9 pm? Let me know if you are a Tremonton/Garland person and might be able to do this!

If you live elsewhere and want to be involved, please let me know so I can put you in touch with the amazing host of the fun party. It's always a highlight of the year.

(You may want to bring a change of clothes to put on after the concert since it will be nice weather and we'll be able to go outside!)

Last Name J-P: Veggie/Fruit Tray, Simple Finger Foods, Hors d'Oeuvres

Last Name Q-Z: Chips and Chips, or Chips and Dip, or other snacky type food

 

The party is at the Hammer's, 754 W 600 N, Brigham City.

 

Here are directions from the Middle School:

 

Head west to Main Street.  Drive north to 600 North.  Turn west (left) to 754 North.  If you cross rail road tracks, you went too far.  Look for a Moose on the porch.

We would love to have an after-concert party on April 20th, and I am hoping someone will volunteer their home and backyard. 

This is a combined LYCO/LYS end-of-year party. The youth had a great time last year!

Music Reminder: 

I will collect ALL music this Saturday - that is, all music that you've had checked out to you from LYS, even stuff we sight-read but didn't play for the concert. This is the LAST concert of the season! (Please don't turn in stuff that belongs to other groups you play with... then I don't have to wonder where it came from!)
