Hi families!

CALENDAR
- December 9: 10:30-12 rehearsal; please make it a priority to attend!
- December 16: HOLIDAY PARTY! Wahoo! It is from 10-11; NUYCO will rehearse from 11-12:30. Simply arrive half an hour early and stay half an hour late!

Before 2020, we hosted an annual Recital Night each January. We would really love to restart that tradition in 2024. We need to gauge interest! To read more information and express interest, please check out this form

Regular NUYCO Rehearsal

Hi families! Hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving.

We have a normal rehearsal tomorrow, 10:30-12:00. As always, please fill out the Attendance Form (linked at the bottom of this email) if you will be absent.

Please read this info about our upcoming Holiday Party from Kathryn Bodrero and our Parent Council.

*****

We're so excited to celebrate the holiday season with you! This year we will have a light brunch during the party. All food will be provided; however, we need your help in order to make this happen! We have a limited budget and are asking for cash donations from those that can help. All donations are welcome, big or small  – the more we have donated, the more food we can provide for the kids. Please stop by the table at rehearsal and drop off your donation on either December 2nd or 9th.

We are also doing a candy gift exchange during the party.  Please bring your wrapped candy ($3-5 value) to our party on December 16th. The candy can be one large item or several small items put together in one package. Have fun with it - the best ideas are always the things you'd like to receive. Wrap your gift as creatively and wacky as you can imagine. We can't wait to celebrate with you this year!

- Do not touch any equipment in the orchestra room or back stage. If you use a chair or stand in the orchestra room, please put it back.
ABSOLUTELY no food or drink in the orchestra room or auditorium. If you are bringing a lunch or snack, make sure it is in a backpack or lunchbox. All food must be consumed on the tiled portion of the hallway (or outside), and make sure you clean up after yourselves. Water bottles filled with water are okay, except during the concert.
- Please do not wander the school. During your down time you are welcome to stay in the orchestra room, quietly sit in the auditorium, sit in the hallway, or enjoy the outdoors if it's not too cold.
- Everyone is expected to be in the auditorium during the concert supporting our amazing Wind Ensemble and Symphony groups.
- Help with cleaning up after the concert.

Rehearsal recap

Hi families, what a fun rehearsal we had today!

I know the first few rehearsals can be overwhelming, especially for the brand new members. That's okay. It's normal. :) If your NUYCO member has a private teacher, please ask the teacher to work on the music with your member! And if you don't have a private teacher and would like one (highly recommended), check out our Private Teacher List.

Stands - due to construction on the school, there is only one rack of stands available that will be split between Symphony and Chamber.  That is not nearly enough stands for us, so we are asking members to bring their own.  It's not ideal, but it is temporary.  We will reserve the stands at the school for the larger instruments (basses) and for those who do not have one available. The stands that came today worked out really well, so please keep bringing those!

Remind - I've invited the last remaining few of you to Remind, so you'll find a text that needs a response! Thanks for joining!

Upcoming Events:
Sept. 23rd - Parent Meeting, 11:15 am, @ Promontory. Please attend; lots of information will be shared.
Oct. 6-7 - Overnight retreat at Camp Earley. We will be combining with the Wind Ensemble and as such, we will only be rehearsing our combined collaboration pieces (the Fireworks selections that your members have right now and another piece that will be handed out next week). It's very, very important that we have all of our members there! And it will be SO fun.

Attendance: If your member must miss a rehearsal, please let me know by filling out the attendance form. It's linked here and at the bottom of EVERY email I send.

As always, reach out if you have any questions or concerns! :)

NUYCO Update

Hello families! I have finally updated my email list for this season. If you received this and think it's a mistake, please reach out! Just a couple of quick things I wanted to cover...

Parent Meeting: Saturday, September 23; time TBA; Promontory School

2023-24 NUYCO Registration is Open!

Hello NUYCO Family!

I hope everyone is having a fun and enjoyable summer so far. This email is to let you know that registration for the 2023 - 2024 season is now open. There are lots of exciting details and many changes below, so please read it all!

Important Dates:
July 21st - Concert Competition Registration is Due (due date was extended). We have also decided to open this up to members in NUYCO, NUYWE, and NUYPS. If your member has been working on something "professional", whether with piano or orchestral/symphonic accompaniment, we invite you to sign up for an audition!
August 12st - Concerto Auditions (Time and Location TBD)
August 26th - In-person Auditions @ PSEL
Sept. 16th - First Rehearsal (see time changes below)
Sept. 23rd - Parent Meetings (required for new families; suggested for returning families)

NUYCO will be back to rehearsing on Saturdays; as a result, rehearsal times have changed for most of the groups. We also have a new Chamber conductor, Dr. Ghyas Zeidieh. You can learn a little more about him here. You might notice that the name of our organization has changed from "Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra" to "Northern Utah Youth Ensembles."  With the addition of the Wind Ensemble and Preparatory Strings, we felt that we needed a name that was more inclusive.

As we approach the new season, we could really use your help getting the word out to your fellow musician friends and encouraging them to audition. If you have younger siblings that play an instrument we would love to have them join one of our younger groups. Here is a general overview of each group (including rehearsal times), with links to their audition page:

Symphony (8:30 am - 11:00 am):
Need at least three years of playing experience on their instrument.  As a symphonic group we are always looking for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion.

Chamber Orchestra (10:30 am - 12:00 pm):
For students who have had at least two years of playing experiences on a string instrument: violin, viola, cello, bass, harp

Wind Ensemble (11:30 am - 12:30 pm):
For students who have had at least two years of playing experience on a wind/brass/percussion instrument: flute, oboe, clarinet,  bassoon, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion. The Wind Ensemble and Chamber orchestra will collaborate from time to time on full symphonic pieces.

Preparatory Strings (9:00 am - 10:00 am):
For string students (violin, viola, cello, bass, harp) who have had at least 1 year of playing experience. This group focuses a lot on the basics and helps introduce ensemble playing skills.

If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. We can't wait to see most of you in August.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

3. Concert: April 27, 7 pm, Bear River High School. NUYCO sound check starts at 5:40 sharp, which means every NUYCO member needs to be in BRHS, ready to go, instrument out and warmed up, by 5:30. Please arrive at 5:15.

4. Rehearsal will continue after the concert in preparation for Tour. Please plan to attend on Thursday, May 4 and Thursday, May 11, 4:30-6:30 pm.

5. TOUR! May 12 and 13. We are so excited!

6. We have four qualified applicants for our available NUYCO Conductor position. I've invited them to audition for the Board of Directors with our members on SATURDAY, May 20, at 10 AM. I realize this is a new time and well after our season ends, but rehearsals will be returning to Saturdays in the fall. We would like all members who can make themselves available to attend! Each conductor will have 15 minutes to rehearse this concert's animal-themed music with the members. We will have some kind of an end-of-year party afterwards with delicious food. It will be fun and you can scope out our new conductor options!
