NUYS Announcements and important reminder

Greetings!

Rehearsal Time - important reminder
This Saturday's rehearsal is on the EARLY SCHEDULE. We start at 8 am and run until 10 am. We did announce this last Saturday and it has been on the calendar from the beginning, so hopefully everyone has internalized the message.

Rehearsal Plan
This Saturday our goal is to give everyone a better overview of the music, see how everyone fits together, and gain more confidence in what you need to practice. So we will be together the whole time - no sectionals. We will begin with Beethoven, and we have decided to ONLY play the first movement of the Beethoven 6th Symphony, at least for this concert. We will also be sightreading a new piece, Hatikvah by Eliot Del Borgo. I (Julie) think you'll like it.

Here is the order of the rehearsal. If you do NOT play in the Beethoven 1st movement, you may sneak in at 8:30 am instead of beginning rehearsal at 8.
7:30 doors unlock
8:00 rehearsal begins
Beethoven 6th, mvt 1
Russian Christmas Music
Hatikvah
Saint-Saens
10:00 rehearsal ends - please help clean up!
10:15 doors lock

Thanks! Still working on the volunteer spreadsheet, and will let you know when it's ready so you can sign up to help out!

See you Saturday!

Lots of Details - Please Read! NUYCO

Hi families! Please read this all the way to the end and email or text me with questions. Lots of info because lots is happening right now!

-- Rehearsal Time Change: This is a biggie! Our rehearsal is EARLY this Saturday. 8:30-10:00 am. See you then!

-- Youtube Playlist: Maestro West has updated our playlist for recordings of the music for this concert. Check it out.

-- Retreat Permission and Medical Form: I need this filled out for each member in NUYCO asap, regardless of whether they will be to the retreat. If there is an emergency during rehearsal, I need to know who has medication and who can't eat peanuts - things like that. Please print it and fill it out; then either send it to rehearsal, scan and email it, or text me a picture!

All Things Retreat! (Hopefully we will have the t-shirts back from the printers before the retreat! It's nice to take a nature-y, matchy matchy photo in our NUYCO shirts. Cross your fingers!)

-- Attendance: I know that the Hearns and the Fowlers will not be coming to the retreat; they are the only two families I am aware of. If you will not be to the retreat and you have not told me, please do that right now! We are planning how much food to buy and would like to only buy what we need.

-- Retreat Permission and Medical Form (again): I need this especially if you will be at the retreat! We will be eating eggs, peanut butter, and other foods. I need to know if you have any allergies, severe or not. Asap, asap, asap!

-- Directions: Here are handy dandy directions for getting to the camp.

-- Sleeping Info: At Camp Earley, everyone sleeps in one lodge. Girls on one side, boys on the other, with a line of adult chaperones down the middle.

-- Volunteers: We need at least one male to chaperone. Maestro West will be the other male chaperone. Please contact me asap if you are available! We would also welcome any females who would like to come, whether to spend the night or help in the kitchen one or both days. Text or email me if that sounds fun to you!

-- Food Offerings: Your $30 retreat payment goes towards the camp fee and the food, so we will be providing the meals. But we would welcome any desserts or snacks! Anything from brownies and cookies to clementines and Ritz crackers. Text or email me if you would like to contribute something.

Did I forget something? Undoubtedly. :) As always, text or email me with questions, concerns, or comments.

Remember, EARLY REHEARSAL on Saturday - 8:30-10:00 am. Please use the Attendance Form linked below if you will be absent!

You're great! Thanks!

NUYCO - See you tomorrow!

 Hi families!

Woohoo, rehearsals start tomorrow! We are so excited to start our new year. If you would like to get to know the specialists, Mr. West (our conductor), and me, check out this document with bios and photos!

LOCATION: Promontory School Library, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry (the library is right across the hall from the gym where NUYS will be rehearsing - follow the music and you will find us!), 9:30 - 11:00 AM (NUYS will meet 8:30-11). You are welcome to bring your own music stand but we will have one set up for you already. No food or drink (besides water) is allowed in the library.

MUSIC: For this concert, we will be playing the Italian Folk Festival arr. Bullock and Abduction from the Seraglio by Mozart. Mr. West will be deciding on a 3rd piece in the near future!

RECRUITMENT: Please recruit more members! We could really use more violas especially, but would gratefully accept any instrument. NUYS could also use basically any instrument!

PARENT MEETING: Our parent meeting Forum and Q&A is next week, Sept. 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also to collect tuition. You are welcome to turn in forms and payments tomorrow if that is more convenient.

ATTENDANCE: If you will be missing a rehearsal anytime between tomorrow and April, please fill out our handy Attendance Form! It's linked at the bottom of all my emails. If you are sick for any reason at any time, please fill out the form and stay home.

CONCERT: Our first concert will be Friday, November 12, at Ogden High School. Yes, Friday - check your calendars. If you have a conflict, please tell me what time would work best for you to perform. The concerts at Ogden High are always my favorite - it's an amazing venue and you don't want to miss it! Please keep Thursday, November 11, open as well. We may need an extra rehearsal that evening to prepare for the concert the next day.

Awesome! See you tomorrow! Please email or text me with any questions. 435.452.8173

See You Tomorrow!

At long last, rehearsals begin tomorrow! So excited to see everyone. This is the part that makes it all worth it.

Location: Promontory School, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry
Time: 8:30 to 11:00 am

We will be sight-reading tomorrow. Here are the pieces, with youtube links...

Beethoven's 6th Symphony, more than one movement, to be determined.

Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed
This link is for the concert band version. I assure you we will be playing the full orchestra version. If anyone finds a recording of the full orchestra version, please share the link with me! Such a cool piece!

Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saens. We will be playing the first movement, which is roughly 8 1/2 minutes in this version.
Congrats to Hugues Herpin Lemonnier, our soloist!

Set up
When you arrive, music stands will be set up for you - your folders will be on your stands.

If you can come early to set up chairs, please do. The computerized doors will unlock at 8 am, and I will be there [much] earlier, just getting everything ready.

Parent Meeting
Reminder that our parent meeting Forum and Q&A will be next week, Sept 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also, to collect tuition. You may also turn in forms and payments at tomorrow's rehearsal, if that works better for you.

Recruiting
Recruit your friends! You don't really want me playing viola with you. Really. What happened to all the violas? There were so many last year!  We need another Clarinet, 3 more French Horns, 2 more Trumpets, and another Trombone.... And more cellos. We would even accept more violins... 😉

Attendance
If you are playing in a Marching Band, or in a Pit Orchestra, or on a Swim Team, or you already know when that family wedding is going to be, I need you to go into the Attendance Form and fill it out multiple times for all the times you will be missing.

I know there are more people that need to do this. After you submit for one date, it will ask you if you would like to submit another form. It's pretty easy and will give us a better picture of what rehearsals are going to look like. Thanks so much!

If you are sick for any reason (not just COVID symptoms), or you've been quarantined, the attendance form is also the best way to let me know. The system notifies me immediately when someone fills out the form, so you can even fill it out tomorrow morning if you wake up feeling ill.

Concert - Important!!!!
Our first concert will be Friday, 12 November, 2021 at Ogden High. Yes, you read that correctly. It's on a Friday. Please Please Please check calendars and get back with me so we can set a time when everyone can be there to perform! I promise you it's worth it to work this out. It's such a beautiful venue!

Please keep Thursday 11 November open as well, and let us know if evening or earlier would work for you. We are anticipating the need for an extra rehearsal that day so we have a good feeling of momentum going into the Friday concert. Ask your band teachers, etc. It is Veteran's Day and there may be issues with rehearsal time, so let's work together to pick the best time.

Thanks, and let's make this a most exquisitely wonderful year!

🎶

Northern Utah Youth Symphony

Greetings!

This is addressed to all school music teachers, but it's also being sent to all who have already signed up for this year, parents, adult leadership, etc...

For this coming year, we are still accepting auditions, especially for Violas, Cellos, Basses; we also need another Clarinet, another Bassoon, 3 more French Horns, Trumpets (2 might be thinking about it) and possibly another trombone - or really any high school student who is interested in the opportunity to play masterworks as part of a full symphony orchestra.

Our numbers are lower this year at this point than they were last year at a similar time, and last year's numbers were only 3/4 of what they had been the year before; it's like we are losing our graduates, but not fully replacing them! I know, COVID....

I'm a little concerned that we will have trouble providing our traditional experiences which rely on good numbers of musicians, and would love your support if anyone comes to mind. I have attached our flyer... If you are a teacher, hopefully you also received a poster/flyer in the mail. We begin rehearsals this coming Saturday. If musicians want to come sightread with us, they are welcome as long as they email me ahead of time so I have music and a seat for them.

Thank you so much! We are all on the same team as we enrich the lives of the youth. Thank you for all that you do! You are all amazing!

Warmly,
Julie Gardner, Manager

PS Our intermediate orchestra (Northern Utah Youth Chamber Orchestra) could also use more players, just to be fair!

NUYCO Final Audition Results

Hello Families!

One of our wonderful NUYCO moms alerted me, very nicely, that I had not notified our video auditioned-members about the audition results! My deepest apologies. I'm a teacher and shoot, things are busy. As a gift to you in compensation, here are the seating results as well, so you can know right where you are in the orchestra!

Two IMPORTANT notes about seating...

1. This will change for every concert. If you were really hoping for a principal seat and weren't chosen this time, never fear! We will have two more seating changes for the next concerts.

2. In some orchestras and symphonies, the conductor places the members by ability. Therefore, the most advanced players are in the front and the beginner players are in the back. But Mr. West doesn't do that! He believes that no matter your ability, you can learn from the people around you. He seats you based on what characteristics and abilities you bring to NUYCO and what you might be able to learn. There might be an advanced player in the back, and there might be a beginner in the front. And then it will all be changed up again in November! :)

At long last... find the seating HERE! Let me know if you have any questions.

-- Many of you haven't signed up for your shirt yet. Please do that here! ALL members AND section specialists get one free NUYCO shirt! Don't miss out!

NUYS Audition Results

Be sure you read these announcements, not just the list below!

Rehearsal starts 18 Sept, 8:30 to 11:00 am at Promontory School. Please come early. Regarding COVID guidelines, we will do what is asked of us by the school.

NUYCO (Chamber Orchestra) will be rehearsing from 9:30-11:00 am. Their audition list was sent out last week.

Please read the audition packet if you submitted an audition video! It includes the following: A printable calendar, your Acceptance, Release and Payment form (to turn in with payment, or if you are paying via online check or some other way, to turn in separately), Membership Info, Rules and Policies, and a Medical Release Form.
