Today's Rehearsal is Cancelled

After assessing the weather and roads this morning, Conrad and I have decided to cancel this morning's rehearsal.

Your job is to practice at home all morning! :)

The recital is still on for tonight, 6:30, Brigham City Tabernacle. The roads look to be better by then.

Thanks, everyone!

I'll start texting.

Julie :)

Attention: NUYS Starting Late Tomorrow

Rehearsal: 9:30 to 11:30 January 30, Promontory School

The storm in the forecast has given us pause, and we are going to begin rehearsal an hour late, and run an extra half hour at the end. Please do the best you can to attend as much as possible. In reality, however, safety is more important.

These types of decisions are difficult since we are making decisions about the future which is truly impossible to predict. However, from what I've gleaned from different forecasts, the rain should turn to snow overnight, but if we start a little later, the road forecast (UDOT) shows that things should look better after 9 or so.

Please stay tuned, and check for texts or other emails before leaving to attend rehearsal tomorrow morning.

Yours in safety,

Julie and Conrad

Press Release: Northern Utah Youth Symphony in Concert, Ogden High, February 20, 2016

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony and the Northern Utah Youth Chamber Orchestra will present their Mid-Year Showcase on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 3:00 pm in the Ogden High School Auditorium, 2828 Harrison Blvd. Admission is FREE thanks to the sponsorship of Jenson Family Dentistry, Brigham City.

The Northern Utah Youth Chamber Orchestra will open the concert. Conducted by Amanda Kippen, this is an

all-strings orchestra dedicated to preparing musicians for the rigor of full symphonic music. They will be performing Shapiro's African Accents, Sammartini's Concertino in G, Meyer's Terra Nova, and a Bach Brandenburg Concerto.

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony will then take the stage. Conducted by Conrad Dunn, their program includes the timeless favorite Carmen Suite No. 1 by Bizet, and A Tribute to John Williams from the Kennedy Center Honors featuring themes from Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, Harry Potter, Raiders, and E.T.

Each concert this year features a member of the orchestra who is a winner from the NUYS concerto auditions. The featured soloist for this concert is Makenzie Harris, French Horn, performing Glière's Horn Concerto, 3rd movement.

Makenzie Harris is a junior at Bear Lake High School in southern Idaho. She has been a member of NUYS for the past two years playing French horn. Makenzie has had the privilege of participating in District, All-State, and All-Northwest honor symphonies. As an honor student, she plays with her local High School band. She is heavily involved in sports, student council, cheerleading, and practically anything else that she sets her mind to. She received 2nd place as a freshman, then 1st as a sophomore at state solo and ensemble competition. Whether it is guitar, songwriting, or French horn, Makenzie has a passion for music.  She loves people and meets thousands every year working as a tour guide at Minnetonka Cave. She is planning on pursuing her dream career as a music therapist, by pursuing her education at Utah State University in 2017. In her spare time, she enjoys cross-country, social dance club, playing softball, doing yoga, and working as a ski instructor at Pine Creek Ski Resort.

Additional Background Information:
These orchestras are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Brigham City, and actively serving musicians from the communities all over Northern Utah and into Idaho.

In addition to the upcoming February 20, 2016, concert, NUYS and NUYCO will present their final concert at Box Elder High School on Thursday, April 28, 2016. NUYS will also be performing at the Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall, March 14, 2015.

The Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is supported by generous donations, grants from George S and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation as well as Utah Arts and Museums, the LBSS annual Gala Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction scheduled for April 9, 2016, and, for this concert specifically, Jenson Dentistry, who makes it possible to offer this evening with FREE Admission.

Recital Flyer, Facebook link, and other info

You are all cordially invited to this special evening of wonderful music!

Please invite your family and friends. Let's fill the Tabernacle, and be inspired. Pianists will be interested as well, so if you have friends who play piano, they will be enthralled by our top-notch accompanists.

I am constantly amazed at how hard our musicians work, and this is a great chance to honor them.

We have two special guests as well, graduates from previous years.

Sarah Pehrson, our concert master (of then-LYS), graduated in 2011 from Fremont High and received her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from Snow College in 2015.

Most of you probably remember our other guest! Clayton Johnson, our principal viola, graduated in 2015 from BRHS and is a freshman viola student at BYUI.

I'm so happy to have both of them return to share their talents with us.

Click here for a PDF suitable for printing and handing around. I did not get this in the paper (sorry, guys!), so let's do our best to get the word out.
*****(If the file doesn't show on your screen, try printing or downloading. It seems to be working even if the file shows up black. Weird.)

Thanks! You are all awesome!

Not Just Bowings -- Everyone read this!

Greetings!

Strings
Here are the bowings for "that spot" in the 5th movement of the Carmen. It's only the second violin part since the picture of this part is most readable, but you are all really smart, and you'll be able to use this to bow the first violin, viola and cello parts as well because everyone is playing the same melody. Aren't you happy? You should be! :)

Recital:
The first Northern Utah Youth Symphony recital is coming up on January 30th, 6:30 pm, Brigham City Tabernacle. If you haven't signed up, it isn't too late! There are still at least 4 spaces left. This Week:
The Gliere Horn Concerto rental music arrives TOMORROW and I will prepare it for you so we can begin learning it this Saturday.

Prepare: Watch the 3rd Movement of the Gliere Horn Concerto on youtube. It's only 7 minutes. You can do this! If everyone were to do this at least once before Saturday it would make everything 500x easier! https://youtu.be/0dKU3MFq70g

See you at regular rehearsal this Saturday!
