Rehearsal and Retreat Info - NUYCO

Hello families! Rehearsal is back to our normal schedule tomorrow - 9:45 to 11:15 AM at Promontory. Please bring a music stand if you have one, and a quick snack and water bottle for the break. Here is the Youtube channel Mr. West has put together with our current concert music. Please utilize it!

Quick Note about tuition: Before this Saturday, we will be sending receipt confirmations if you have taken care of all your paperwork and tuition. If you haven't turned it in, or we are missing forms from you, you will also be contacted with your list of what is missing.

This is also our official notice of the cancellation of this year's retreat. However, we will be offering after-rehearsal activities a few times in the next month or two. These activities may include pizza, games, musical games, and get-to-know-you activities. We may also hold an extended rehearsal; that is still being decided. Stay tuned for more info! If anyone has ideas of fun activities we could do, please let us know!

We have rehearsal on Halloween! The last time rehearsal was on Halloween, we opened it up to costumes! It was really fun. So, that will definitely be one of our social activities, and we will work out a way to have safely-served treats and a short activity after rehearsal as well.

Be well, and see you soon! Remember the routine about attendance. If you're sick or have been quarantined, don't come. Here's the attendance form

Thanks for helping us have a chamber orchestra this year - we are so happy to know all of you!

Announcements for this Saturday & Retreat decision - NUYS

Greetings!

We have rehearsal at our normal time again this Saturday, 8:30 to 11:00. There are several important announcements below. Please read to the end.

Here is the planned schedule:
8:00 Doors open; set up help is appreciated
8:20 find your seat, get warmed up, prepare for sectional
8:30 Sectionals as follows:
Strings all together in the gym
Woodwinds to the right and left
Brass to the left and right
9:25 Dismiss sectionals
9:30 Full Rehearsal
Music will be rehearsed with "shrinking" instrumentation in mind: Star Wars, Salute to Broadway, Saint-Saens, Mozart, with an emphasis for concertos in String Sectionals as well as in full rehearsal on putting together the orchestra, so the soloists may be playing a lot less.
11:00 Rehearsal Ends
11:30 Doors lock

Quick Note about tuition: Before this Saturday, we will be sending receipt confirmations if you have taken care of all your paperwork and tuition. If you haven't turned it in, or we are missing forms from you, you will also be contacted with your list of what is missing. I have only received 15 medical forms! You may turn in forms to me or to Josie; you may also turn in payments to me or to Josie. (I may be absent for all or part of the rehearsal this Saturday.)

This is also our official notice of the cancellation of this year's retreat. With only 60% responding, and only half of them willing to participate fully, and out of an abundance of caution, which it seems you are asking for, we feel that there will be more connection between musicians if we keep our activities at Promontory School this year. Remember, it's pretty great that we are doing this at all, and we are working on getting dates for next year!

Plans for alternate social activities are being made, so keep an eye on these emails. If you want to volunteer, as a youth or parent, with ideas or for facilitating activities so we can get to know each other, please let me know!

T-shirts will still be ordered and passed out at our first social activity. (Possibly the same day as retreat would have been, Oct 24). If I don't have your t-shirt order, I will let you know when I send out tuition requests/receipts. This order needs to be placed asap!!!!

Additional heads-up. We have rehearsal on Halloween! The last time rehearsal was on Halloween, we opened it up to costumes! It was really fun. So, that will definitely be one of our social activities, and we will work out a way to have safely-served treats and a short activity after rehearsal as well.

You are all amazing! Thank you for who you are and what you do. I love this orchestra, especially because of who's in it.

Be well, and see you soon! Remember the routine about attendance. If you're sick or have been quarantined, don't come. Here's the attendance form

Retreat 2020 Survey and Rehearsal Announcements - NUYS

Greetings!

This Saturday's rehearsal has a slightly different schedule. Please note that we are starting a half hour early, and ending early, at 10 am.

Here is the plan:
7:30 am, doors open
7:50 am, prepare for sectionals, start warming up
8:00 am, sectionals (including strings)
8:35 am, head back to the gym
8:40 am, full rehearsal - Pieces with larger instrumentation first, ending with the Cello Concerto.
Keep working on the Mozart Clarinet Concerto at home and ask questions in sectionals. We will work on that piece next week. Wieniawski is in your folder to work on individually.
10:00 am, rehearsal ends
10:30 am, doors lock

Thanks ahead of time for your very quick response to the survey below, regarding the retreat! Responses needed before this Monday!

Please be aware that tuition is due (today, actually). Forms for payment and medical release can be found here. If you have any questions, please contact us!

Calendar heads-up: We have a firm date for our February concert, on the 27th, at Mount Logan Middle School. and.... We have a "tentative" date for the April concert. (Tentative in quotes because they are not officially scheduling the auditorium for April yet, but when (hopefully) they do, this will be our date.) It's Thursday, April 29. :)

See you Saturday! Remember, if you are feeling sick or have been quarantined from contact tracing, Stay Home! The Attendance form link is, as always, in the signature of this email.

Retreat 2020 Survey
Our retreat has been a highlight yearly since 2010. It usually runs for 24 hours, and this year is scheduled from 5 pm on Friday, October 23, to 5 pm on Saturday, October 24, which enables people to drive to and from the camp's remote location in the daylight. Camp UTABA http://camputaba.org/ is in the north end of the Ogden Valley. Map link: https://goo.gl/maps/aDceY9efPnWPjYwt8

At Camp UTABA, they cook for us and we make music. We gather Friday, have dinner, a rehearsal, and play get-to-know-you games, then sleep in cabins. On Saturday, we have breakfast, a rehearsal, skits, lunch, a cleaning session, another rehearsal, and then a final sweep up before heading home. Included are several well-loved outdoor activities: Carpet Ball, a Giant See-saw thing with springs under the center, and, of course, the great outdoors.

This year, the camp hosts have been working closely with the Weber County Health Department. Several bunk beds have been removed from each cabin to reduce cabin capacity and enable social distancing, but they still have room for us because of the smaller orchestra this year.

The lodge where we dine and rehearse, however, does not give us the same amount of space for physical distancing that we are getting used to in the gym at Promontory School, and the get-to-know-you games may need to be changed and / or moved outdoors (for those of you who have been before, we're not sure about whack 'em - might need to play some outdoor night games instead - suggestions welcome). So, be sure to bring a coat!

The chance to get to know each other and make music together in this lovely setting with the beavers, moose, and other wildlife (sometimes skunks), has been a beloved kickoff for our season over the past decade.

We would dearly love this activity to happen, but we need to know your thoughts and intentions in regard to running it. Our date is roughly 3 weeks from now, and we need to make a decision by Monday, Oct 5.

This survey is to find out who would be committed to participating in the retreat this year, or what your level of interest is in an alternate activity.

The cost is minimal. We just pass the money on to the camp. Total cost is $55. If you don't spend the night, but eat the meals, it's $30. Meals average out to be $10 each. If we only go for Saturday we may choose to eat 3 meals, so the tentative cost would be $30. If you are on a scholarship, please understand that the scholarship does not cover the retreat. If it's still a financial burden, please talk to us. We can usually find a sponsor.

I collected a few pictures from the last couple years, so you can see a little of what it's like.

Thanks!!!!
Julie

Retreat!

Greetings!

There was a paper handed out Saturday that was the Retreat Info Revised!

I just want to make sure everyone gets it, even those not at rehearsal last Saturday, so I have linked to it here. It's all good info -- including the address to the camp.

The extra notes added at the bottom of the page are important, so I'm pasting them here too:
Extra Notes:
*Be sure to bring a sturdy music stand. As not everyone has a sturdy stand, if you have more than one STURDY music stand, bring those too.
*If you have a battery powered LED book light or reading light, you may find it useful during rehearsal.
*Bring a (nonperishable) snack to share for Saturday snack time (4pm) to give us plenty of energy to CLEAN! haha!
We will collect them when you arrive Friday so we can remember to serve SNACKs when it's TIME. :)
Thanks, everyone! If I do not have your permission slip yet, I have sent a separate text message. Please make sure you bring that!

Also, if you are one of the very few who have not turned in the Acceptance, Release and Payment form, I'll need that too!...

Thanks!

Have a great week, and come prepared for a great time Friday and Saturday!

Rehearsal This Saturday (YES!), Additional Chaperons Needed and Retreat Info

Greetings!

I want people to actually read this email, so I'm trying to keep it uncomplicated (read short and sweet!).

1. I am looking for two more male chaperons to sleep in a newly-added third boys' cabin. You would not have to stay the whole time. 8:30 pm to 7:30 am is fine. Please contact me asap if interested.

2. Rides to and from the retreat (next week, Oct 23-24) are up to you. If you need ideas of who to carpool with, please contact me. I'll be happy to help people connect in this way.

3. The retreat details and location are on the handouts from auditions (I have attached it as well.) Here is a link to the google map for the camp.

4. There is rehearsal this Saturday! If you are in town, please attend. :)

Wonderful! Thanks!

Music, Concertos, Recital, Retreat

Greetings!

Music
Tomorrow at rehearsal we will be handing out two new pieces and putting one on the "long term work" list. We will be performing Scheherazade on the April concert, next spring, in its entirety. That is the goal. This is a phenomenal piece of music, and we know we are capable of it, but realize the need for more time to really make it amazing.

For the November concert our pieces will be as follows (drum roll please)
William Tell Overture, Rossini
Flute Concerto in D, first movement, Mozart (Allison Francis, soloist)
Pirates of the Caribbean
Sleigh Ride, Leroy Anderson

We will keep Scheherazade and work on it throughout the year.

Concerto Soloists
Also, congratulations to our other concerto soloists this year who will be
MaKenzie Harris, Gliere Horn Concerto, Feb 20
Megan Brasher, Barber Violin Concerto, April 28

Recital Night
The other four musicians who participated in concerto auditions will be featured performers on our Recital Night which is set for January 30 in the Brigham City Tabernacle. The remainder of the program is open to solo and small groups of students from both orchestras. Sign ups will begin soon!

Retreat
One note about the retreat: If you are still on the "maybe" list, please realize that this is rehearsal that weekend (actually, it's 3 rehearsals!), and if you don't have another reason to not participate, please make the effort to attend. We do have fun, we do play games, have skits, and be crazy, but we need you at rehearsal too!

We have people that are coming to just part of it, or we have had people not spend the night and just come up Friday night and then again on Saturday (and I can let you know what the costs are for partial participation... just ask), but it's really best to attend the whole thing!

I don't know for sure how many chaperons I need until I have a specific commitment, one way or the other, from each of you.

Thanks for everything, especially your support and commitment!

Don't forget to use the the Attendance Form if you need to arrive late, leave early, or be absent. It's working very nicely. Thank you to those who have used it!

NUYS

Did you have fun? I had fun, for sure. I enjoyed getting to know you, or getting to know you better. I enjoyed making music with you, attempting to whack you (or watching you attempting to whack each other), and I especially enjoyed the good laugh you provided with your skits!
Reminder
This Saturday, November 1st (8:30 to 11:00) you are invited to wear your costumes to rehearsal, just to prolong the silliness. Sounds fun, eh? Be sure to wear something that doesn't interfere with your main job, which is playing your instrument!
Concert schedule
Our concert is just a few weeks away. Here is a reminder of the schedule:
Saturday, November 22, Bear River High School Auditorium
11:00 am to 1:15 pm, NUYS Rehearsal
1:15 pm to 2:30 pm, NUYCO Rehearsal (flyers will be handed out this Saturday regarding food for this break)
3:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Combined Concert

Thank you for being flexible with our concert schedule! We are pleased to perform at multiple venues throughout Northern Utah, even if it means making some adjustments ahead of time.
For your calendars, our remaining concerts this year will be:
Saturday, February 21, Logan High School Auditorium (we are holding off scheduling the time in case we really like the timing of the November concert)
Monday, March 3, Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall, Salt Lake City
*Thursday, April 23, Box Elder High School Auditorium (If you have a foreseeable problem or unresolvable conflict with the Thursday concert next April, be sure to contact me asap.)

Lost and Found:
I have a black cardigan found on the porch between Agape and Gohio. Let me know if it's yours!

See you Saturday!

Retreat

We are really looking forward to the retreat!

Just a couple notes:
If you get this email in time and would like to bring a snack or treat to share for Saturday afternoon, that would be great. Our lunch is at 12:30, and then we have rehearsal, so we will be possibly hungry when it's time to pack up and go home. The camp is feeding us three meals, Friday dinner, and Saturday breakfast and lunch, but not Saturday dinner, so if you are like me, you might want a bit of something after Saturday afternoon rehearsal.

We are looking for someone to help transport a string bass, possibly to camp on Friday, and for sure home from camp on Saturday. The bass player lives east of the Lowe's on Washington and North Street. Please let me know if you can swing that direction either on your way, or on your way home. Thanks!

Don't forget to bring a music stand, and a jacket. It gets chilly up there at night.

Concert
Our first concert is November 22 at Bear River High School in Garland (near Tremonton). It will be a matinee performance, beginning at 3 pm. We will rehearse on stage 11 am to 1:15 pm, then make way for the Chamber Orchestra to rehearse for an hour or so before the concert.

We have a parent organizing food for the break in between. Stay on the lookout for announcements about this. If you would like to volunteer to help, let me know.

The concert will be sponsored by Classical Strings. You may have noticed Grover Wilhelmsen when he came and played bass with us last Saturday. He is the owner of Classical Strings, our sponsor for this concert.

If there are any other announcements, I will send another email.

So excited for the retreat! Let me know if you have questions.

:) Julie Gardner

Forms, Tuition, Retreat, FOOD, etc.

Greetings!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for turning in the Acceptance, Release and Payment form. Thank you to all who have already done this.

Forms:
With our retreat coming up in just 3 weeks, don't forget your retreat forms tomorrow. There is a permission slip, and also an optional food suggestions form included at the bottom of the general information sheet. I automatically count everyone as "going" unless they tell me otherwise. Some people have already talked to me.

Important Food Announcement & Inquiry:
Our food committee head cooks from last year have discovered they will be unable to cook for the retreat this year. We have two options: Find someone else, or hire the Camp UTABA staff to provide the food for us. If there is anyone out there willing or able to feed upwards of 80 people for 24 hours, please contact me asap. (The camp kitchen is not available to us if we cater our own meals.)

However, we are not opposed to working with the camp staff for our menu needs, so don't feel too badly if you can't help out. I will have to know ASAP to coordinate our plans with them.

Looking forward to a great rehearsal tomorrow!

-Julie Gardner, Managing Director
