See You Tomorrow!

At long last, rehearsals begin tomorrow! So excited to see everyone. This is the part that makes it all worth it.

Location: Promontory School, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry
Time: 8:30 to 11:00 am

We will be sight-reading tomorrow. Here are the pieces, with youtube links...

Beethoven's 6th Symphony, more than one movement, to be determined.

Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed
This link is for the concert band version. I assure you we will be playing the full orchestra version. If anyone finds a recording of the full orchestra version, please share the link with me! Such a cool piece!

Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saens. We will be playing the first movement, which is roughly 8 1/2 minutes in this version.
Congrats to Hugues Herpin Lemonnier, our soloist!

Set up
When you arrive, music stands will be set up for you - your folders will be on your stands.

If you can come early to set up chairs, please do. The computerized doors will unlock at 8 am, and I will be there [much] earlier, just getting everything ready.

Parent Meeting
Reminder that our parent meeting Forum and Q&A will be next week, Sept 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also, to collect tuition. You may also turn in forms and payments at tomorrow's rehearsal, if that works better for you.

Recruiting
Recruit your friends! You don't really want me playing viola with you. Really. What happened to all the violas? There were so many last year!  We need another Clarinet, 3 more French Horns, 2 more Trumpets, and another Trombone.... And more cellos. We would even accept more violins... 😉

Attendance
If you are playing in a Marching Band, or in a Pit Orchestra, or on a Swim Team, or you already know when that family wedding is going to be, I need you to go into the Attendance Form and fill it out multiple times for all the times you will be missing.

I know there are more people that need to do this. After you submit for one date, it will ask you if you would like to submit another form. It's pretty easy and will give us a better picture of what rehearsals are going to look like. Thanks so much!

If you are sick for any reason (not just COVID symptoms), or you've been quarantined, the attendance form is also the best way to let me know. The system notifies me immediately when someone fills out the form, so you can even fill it out tomorrow morning if you wake up feeling ill.

Concert - Important!!!!
Our first concert will be Friday, 12 November, 2021 at Ogden High. Yes, you read that correctly. It's on a Friday. Please Please Please check calendars and get back with me so we can set a time when everyone can be there to perform! I promise you it's worth it to work this out. It's such a beautiful venue!

Please keep Thursday 11 November open as well, and let us know if evening or earlier would work for you. We are anticipating the need for an extra rehearsal that day so we have a good feeling of momentum going into the Friday concert. Ask your band teachers, etc. It is Veteran's Day and there may be issues with rehearsal time, so let's work together to pick the best time.

Thanks, and let's make this a most exquisitely wonderful year!

🎶

Northern Utah Youth Symphony

Greetings!

This is addressed to all school music teachers, but it's also being sent to all who have already signed up for this year, parents, adult leadership, etc...

For this coming year, we are still accepting auditions, especially for Violas, Cellos, Basses; we also need another Clarinet, another Bassoon, 3 more French Horns, Trumpets (2 might be thinking about it) and possibly another trombone - or really any high school student who is interested in the opportunity to play masterworks as part of a full symphony orchestra.

Our numbers are lower this year at this point than they were last year at a similar time, and last year's numbers were only 3/4 of what they had been the year before; it's like we are losing our graduates, but not fully replacing them! I know, COVID....

I'm a little concerned that we will have trouble providing our traditional experiences which rely on good numbers of musicians, and would love your support if anyone comes to mind. I have attached our flyer... If you are a teacher, hopefully you also received a poster/flyer in the mail. We begin rehearsals this coming Saturday. If musicians want to come sightread with us, they are welcome as long as they email me ahead of time so I have music and a seat for them.

Thank you so much! We are all on the same team as we enrich the lives of the youth. Thank you for all that you do! You are all amazing!

Warmly,
Julie Gardner, Manager

PS Our intermediate orchestra (Northern Utah Youth Chamber Orchestra) could also use more players, just to be fair!

NUYS Auditions

Greetings!

Audition Timeline
Thank you for your patience with our audition process. We truly appreciate everyone who has submitted an audition video, as well as those who came in person last Saturday! It was wonderful to see you in person, by the way! It always boosts my spirits to see you again!

We thought you all would like to know the status of audition evaluations. We should be through all the videos by the end of the upcoming weekend, maybe even by Saturday night, at which time we will send out a list via email, which will also be posted on the website.

Again, thank you for your patience!

Let's find more people!
Here's a plug for more players! Let's get the word out as schools are gradually coming back in session.

We currently have a possible 4 flutes, 2 oboes, 1 clarinet, 1 bass clarinet, 1 bassoon, 1 French horn, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 1 bass trombone, 1 tuba, 3 percussion, 22 violins, 2 violas, 5 cellos, and 1 bass.

It would be amazing if we could total out with one more clarinet, one more bassoon, 3 more French horns, 2 more trumpets, one more trombone, a harpist, as many more violins as we can get, at least 6 more violas, 5 more cellos, and 3 more basses.

That may sound like a tall order, but we know it's possible. We would love to have 80 players in the orchestra, like we did 2 years ago, before COVID. In reality, the best recruiters are YOU. Let's work together to make this an amazing come-back year!

Thank you so much!
Julie 🎶

PS If you need to be unsubscribed from this list, please reply and let me know! I did my best.

Here's what we looked like March 2nd, 2020!

After much soul-searching and watching-where-my-life-is-taking-me-in-the-foreseeable-future, it has come time to announce (after this upcoming season) my pending retirement as Managing Director of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony. Hence, the following notice.

Please help us network, passing it on to music teachers, musician friends, colleagues, and whoever might know someone who knows someone who might be the right person!

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony announces an opening for a new Managing Director-in-Training, set to take over the Managing Director position by May of 2022, when the current Managing Director will retire.

  • Plans to come and stay on a long term basis, becoming part of the core of this non-profit organization
  • Addresses all aspects of managing a dynamic orchestra of motivated Jr High and High School age musicians in their love of music and ensemble
There is a stipend for this position, paid quarterly, amount DOE.

Music, management and youth symphony experience preferred but not required.

Background check is required.

Thank you!
Julie Gardner, currently the Managing Director, Northern Utah Youth Symphony

Please note: This email went out "BCC" to "All Contacts" for the last decade or so, a seldom-used list, just to be sure to catch as many people in the network as possible. Apologies for the intrusion!

20 May 2021

Congratulations! Thank you all for a wonderful year! - NUYS

Dear Northern Utah Youth Symphony Musicians!
I would like to take this opportunity to not only congratulate you on a great concert, but to thank you for an incredible season! What would otherwise have a difficult year, we made the best of it and made some wonderful music.
All of our concerts this season were incredible, and Monday's concert was a spectacular ending to our season! The music was a little more challenging and everyone met that challenge and played well. The Fanfare was spine chilling. These brass and percussion players were awesome. It really wowed the audience!
The Meistersinger was the best you had played it and all those little themes came out nicely. Natalie's violin concerto brought a lot of emotion as it was so beautifully presented. What a great artist you are Natalie! And what a great closer with the Capriccio Espagnol! Our wonderful soloists in the Capriccio really made it memorable. Everyone seemed to get into the Spanish spirit!
How great it was to be able to perform a full season this year! A lot of great music with our great members. Our soloists Elizabeth Archuleta, Kai Bowen, and Talmage Kay, were outstanding!
Last but not least, we need to thank our wonderful manager Julie Gardner!! Her hard work and a lot of organizing made it all possible!
I look forward to seeing many of you return next season. To those who are graduating – Thank You! We will miss you. But just know you may play with us whenever you get the chance.

Conrad Dunn
Conductor, Northern Utah Youth Symphony

---

And a note from Julie:
I will let you know when the website is updated for our next round of auditions!

Have a wonderful summer, and we'll see you soon!

Blessings,
Julie

NUYS - Announcements Galore - Read to the end, please!

Greetings!
Today is the day before our final rehearsal, and today is also three days before the final concert of our miracle year!

I have thought of some things that didn't happen this year, like our retreat, recital night, Abravanel Hall, and the Side-by-Side concert with the Utah Symphony....

But by and large, we have done so much! Three concerts, a T-Shirt Party, good connections with each other, wonderful music, so much opportunity for musical growth! We have had superb section specialists, an amazing lineup of soloists, and so much more! Totally worth the time and effort!

Concert Registration and Volunteers!
Audience registration for the concert is going well. So far we have 360 people registered, so keep inviting people! I will not be counting "available seats" because I can tell we have plenty. If your spectators request or have requested more than 10, I have automatically added those to their group. No confirmation needed. Just come. They will be choosing their own seats, as well, just as we've done in the past.

As far as volunteers go, we definitely need more check-in people and ushers. I know with continued revisions of rules it seems silly, but we promised to do it. Perhaps some youth symphony musicians can help with it since you don't play at the beginning of the concert, and you will likely be available during the check-in and usher times. Feel free to sign up if you feel comfortable doing it.

Tomorrow!
Rehearsal will look a little different tomorrow. We will still begin with sectionals at 8:30 for 45 minutes, but Mr Dunn will work with the strings the whole time.

At 9:15 when we gather for our full rehearsal, we will run the concert straight through. Here is concert order:
Fanfare for the Common Man
Die Meistersinger
Wieniawski Concerto
Capriccio Espagnole

Then, after a break, we will reconvene and work on spots... Whatever Mr Dunn feels will be the best use of our remaining time.

As usual, doors automatically unlock at 8 am, and lock again at 11:30.

Monday!
We will be setting up as soon as school lets out, and will be in full swing by 3 pm.
We will NOT be using the band room for cases. Instead, we will use the Drama room, which connects to backstage on stage left. Just come in the front door to Box Elder High School and go through the cafeteria. The drama room double doors are on the other side of the cafeteria.

We aim to begin rehearsal at 3:30. I am aware some of you will have to check out of school a little early. We only have 45 minutes on stage, and most of it will be for stage management, knowing where to be and when, and doing some sound checks, especially with the concerto and the harp/solo spots.

We will NOT require concert dress for the rehearsal; however, after the performance, you will be asked to come down the steps at the front of the stage for photos!

If anyone has a quality DSLR that could give us a good clear photo - and the Chamber Orch as well, and would be willing to take photos and share them, please let me know!

Music!
All folders will be collected at the end of the concert.

PLEASE remove all personal papers and other music from your folder. If you are graduating, you can even take the stack of cards from over the years. I will still know it's your folder.

If you are continuing next year, you will have the same folder next year.

Please remove the special keepsake programs from the previous concerts and keep them! There are no extras, so those programs are one-of-a-kind, just for you to remember this weird year.

Concert Dress!
  • Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.
  • Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.
  • Let me know if you have questions... By now, we kind of know the drill!

Although I expect most excellent attendance tomorrow, be sure to use the Attendance Form if you need it, or shoot me an email or text me 435.740.4335.

Thank you! Have a most wonderful day, and we'll see you tomorrow!

Julie 🎵

PS There is an article in the Box Elder News Journal announcing our concert. The paper is available at check stands at local grocery stores until the next Weds issue is released. It's opposite the article about my son Isaac's adventures on Forged in Fire. Yes. I had to say that!

NUYS Announcements for 5/8 rehearsal

Greetings!

Thanks to everyone who has registered audience members! Just to clarify, you can have more than one group register, just try to keep the number of people coming to see you at 10 or under, and do request additional seats as you see fit. I will keep track and let you know if it looks like we will be going over our limit, but I doubt we will. Here's the link for the registration.

Tomorrow's rehearsal will follow roughly the same schedule as last week, with doors opening at 8, sectionals at 8:30, with strings all together, running Fanfare at 9, and then full orchestra at approximately 9:15, with the concerto last. Clean up at 11.

This week and next week we will be at promontory school at our normal times, and then we will be at Box Elder High School on Monday May 17th.

Schedule for concert day:
3:00 set up. If you live closeby or go to BEHS, please come help. I know this is not closeby for many of you, and I really appreciate anything you have to do to make it on time. If you need a note from me, please ask.
3:30-4:15 NUYS practice/sound check
4:30-5:00 NUYCO practice/sound check/audience seating begins
5:30 Concert, about 1 hour and 15 minutes, NUYCO first
After each segment of the concert we will have that group pose on the stairs of the front of the stage for a picture.

I have sent a press release to the papers, and will have it up on the website sometime today, when I get a chance.

Thank you! I can't believe we've had such a great year, considering everything!

Planning Ahead... Save these dates:
August 14, concerto auditions
August 21, regular auditions for both orchestras, in person and virtual
September 18, first rehearsal
October 22-23, retreat at Camp UTABA - If you need to take the ACT this fall, take it in September or December! Our retreat is ACT weekend! Plan ahead.... 😉

If you are sick or quarantined, you know the drill. Here's the link to the Attendance Form.

See you all tomorrow! You are all wonderful!

Audience Registration Begins NOW!

Audience Registration for our May 17th concert begins now!

The concert is Monday, May 17th, at 5:30 pm at Box Elder High School. We have permission to invite a normal sized audience!

There is basically no limit to how many people you can invite or bring, as long as we contact-trace the audience, and everyone wears a mask. If it looks like we're going to overbook the place, I'll let you know!

I'm putting a 10 person limit per family and as long as we don't go over about 750 people in the audience (which I don't think we've ever done in a normal year), then we're good to go! Feel free to ask for more seats in the comments. But don't claim seats that you won't be using!

Let's build a great big awesome audience!

The short version:
  • Invite anyone you want!
  • Have them register ahead of time.
  • Make sure they know they have to wear masks the entire time because the social distance restrictions have been lifted.

Volunteers Needed
We will also need extra check-in people and ushers to handle the larger audience, plus volunteers to strike the stage at the end.

Please consider signing up to help with this!

Here is the Volunteer sheet!

If you can see it but can't figure out how to sign up, just reply to this email and let me know what you want to sign up for... I'll add you to the list.

Thanks, everyone, for participating in this miraculous season!

We will start our audience registration very soon! Watch for an audience registration email.

Don't forget about the Attendance Form! If you are sick with anything, or quarantined, or have to miss. If the form is glitching on you, send an email or text me (435.740.4335). Although I prefer the form, I'd rather have the information.
