Last Saturday's Rehearsal:
Thanks to everyone who braved the storm! I couldn't believe we had 8 inches of snow at noon, and then it started Raining! What planet are we on?

Hey, flutists! You missed out on some friendly & free coaching! Jana came to rehearsal with me and covered the missing flute parts!... She might be talked into coming again on the 8th (she flies out on the 9th), but only if you are coming to rehearsal, K?

Things are starting to shape up for our next concert, and we even tried some music for wind ensemble. Thanks again for a great rehearsal, and Enjoy your Christmas and New Year break! My life is better because of you, and I hope you are enjoying youth symphony this year. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to make things even better!

Calendar in the Near Future:
December 25, January 1: Christmas & New Years (Don't come to rehearsal. I won't be there!)

Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Today's Rehearsal:
Today we read through the Accolay for the first time, and we worked together on the Schubert (2nd Movement). We also sight-read the Waltz from Sleeping Beauty, but we were hoping it would have more brassy & woodwindy parts, so there's a chance we won't be playing it, but we will be playing something a little more interesting for the winds & brass.

See ya next week for our last rehearsal before the break! :)

Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Today's Rehearsal:
We enjoyed sight reading the Bruch concerto and the second movement of the Schubert today. It will be really neat to play the Schubert straight through at Abravanel Hall in February.

We will have the music for the Accolay concerto by next week.

The winds went in the other room and sight-read a piece together today. Funeral music by Wagner! They thought that was pretty funny. (the funeral part!) The strings worked on some tough passages in the Schubert together.

Thanks for a great rehearsal. We missed a few people today that we didn't expect to be gone. We hope everyone's okay!

LYS: Great Concert Tonight! Nov 20, 2010

Greetings!
This is Julie Gardner, 435.723.8262, GJulieKay@gmail.com
Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Thank you! What a lovely concert!
Thanks to everyone for their hard work & preparation for the concert tonight. I appreciate all the practice & preparation, travel from as far as Riverdale and Garland, hauling of percussion equipment, help with sectionals and workshops, attendance at our retreat, and cookie baking!

I noticed that 3 people were absent at the concert. I am so sorry... I have a feeling they were confused on the time! I loved doing it at 5pm, but I didn't mean to leave anyone in the dust. I suppose this is why it's so important to read these emails!

Please have a wonderful holiday this week, travel safely, and enjoy your time off. If you forgot to hand in your music, please bring it to the next rehearsal. I haven't checked through it yet, but if you did not hand it in, you know who you are! :)

Calendar in the Near Future:
November 27: No Rehearsal! Happy Thanksgiving!

December 4, 11, 18: Regular Rehearsals, ACYI, 9:00-11:15am

LYS Saturday Report for November 13, 2010

Greetings!
This is Julie Gardner, 435.723.8262, GJulieKay@gmail.com
Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Cookies:
I'm looking for 3 likely people who are willing to bring a couple dozen cookies for a little "after concert soiree" in the lobby this Saturday. Please email me. I just don't have time to call, and I've actually had this assignment for several weeks and keep forgetting to ask, so please save my skin and volunteer. :)

November 13 Concerto Auditions:
Congratulations to Krystell Taylor (LYCO) and our own Sarah Pehrson for your great auditions for Concerto Night! We look forward to performing with you on Feb 5th. We also have one other soloist (on the viola) who we will announce later if the music all works out!

November 13 Rehearsal:
Thanks to the strings for coming early! You are awesome!

I'm sure we all felt the need to do some practicing for this Saturday's concert! Let's be sure we spend the time to make it great! It was also really nice to have Rob back, and to have the percussion equipment out. Fun Fun!

This Saturday, November 20th:
This is our concert day! Yay!
I will be at the Middle School Auditorium unloading percussion and setting up at 8:30 am. Anyone willing to help is welcome!
Rehearsal is from 9-11am on the stage. LYCO will be rehearsing from 11-12, so we need to be prompt and focused. :)

Concert: Be there by 4:30 pm. The concert starts at 5pm. LYCO will play first (about 20 minutes) then we will take the stage.

There is an admission charge! It defrays the cost of renting the auditorium. It is $3 for adults, $2 for children 11 & under, $2 for seniors, and $12 for families all living under one roof.  Thank you for your support in this! Our budget is extremely tight and we believe strongly in continuing to provide this program for our youth!

Calendar in the Near Future:
November 27: No Rehearsal! Happy Thanksgiving!

December 4, 11, 18: Regular Rehearsals, ACYI, 9:00-11:15am

Messiah Note:
For those of you playing in Messiah with LBCS, there is no rehearsal this coming week, Tues Nov 23rd. The remaining rehearsals are: Tues Nov 30, Thurs Dec 2 (both @ACYI, 6:30-8:30) and dress rehearsal Thurs Dec 9 (@Box Elder Tabernacle).
The Sing-in is Dec 10th, 7:30 pm, Box Elder Tabernacle. If you aren't playing, bring friends and come sing! It will be fun, and free admission!

LYS Saturday Report for November 6, 2010

Greetings!
Please read this! I need strings to come early next week. I did not announce this at rehearsal! See highlighted sections below for full info! AND: Please reply to this email to acknowledge that you received it!
Oh, this is Julie Gardner, 435.723.8262,
GJulieKay@gmail.com
Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Today's Rehearsal:
A Huge Thank You to Amy Elmer and Cami Dilg for assisting in our rehearsal this morning. Along with Nada & Sarah Pehrson and me, we were able to split up for sectionals. Thank you, Thank you! You are all awesome. We were missing a few people, some I had heard from, some I hadn't! We hope you all come back next week! :)

Next Week, November 13th:
I meant to announce this at the end of rehearsal this morning, but I lost track of time and we ended rather abruptly: I need to have all Strings ready to rehearse next week on the 13th at 8:30am! Yes, that means everyone that plays violin, viola, cello, or bass! We have a lot to accomplish, and I feel strongly that the strings need to meet a half-hour early. So, next week, please be ready to play by 8:30. This means arrival time: 8:20!

I will be there by 8:10 to set up. Big smiles and giggles for anyone who comes early enough to help out!

Winds & Brass, please arrive by 8:50am, come quietly into the band room & set up your stuff, then warm up in the orchestra room so you are ready to rehearse by 9:00am! This will facilitate the best use of our time.

Does it sound like I'm a little worried about the upcoming concert? Well... I'm not worried, but I do think we need a longer rehearsal next week, so I'm asking for one!  Thanks!

Remember, the Nov 20th concert is at 5pm. Please plan to be there by 4:30pm.

Calendar in the Near Future:
November 13: String Sectional, 8:30-9:00am.  Regular Rehearsal, 9-11:15 am, ACYI.

November 13: Concerto Auditions, 11:30am.

November 20: Dress Rehearsal (you do not need your concert attire - it just means we are rehearsing on the stage) at BEMS, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City, 9-11am

November 20: Concert at BEMS, 5pm (arrival time: 4:30pm) Click here for the run-down on formal concert attire, or look at your Membership Information sheet from the beginning of the year.

Last Saturday's rehearsal:
Thanks to Chuck Thompson for conducting our rehearsal last Saturday! We really appreciate his time & effort and the chocolate he brought for our treat table, and for the game... If I hadn't been so anxious to rehearse, we would have spent more time on it and it would have been more fun!

Thanks to everyone for bringing treats!

This Saturday, Nov 6th:
This Saturday we will be spending some time in sectionals. Please be sure to practice your trouble spots beforehand and come prepared to work together and learn from each other. We will spend the first hour in sectionals and the second hour together putting up with my conducting! :) Rob will be back on the 13th. Yay!

Please be careful to keep the door propped with the garbage can. Need I say more? Oh, sorry so many people were locked out temporarily last Saturday. I just couldn't believe so many people were late! Ha Ha.

Hi!

Just wanted to give you a heads up about the up and coming "Music in the City" concert for November. We have Leaping Lulu performing on November 19. Sara Law in that group is a great celtic fiddler. I think some of you would really enjoy the show. Thanks!

LYS Reminder and Important Question

Greetings!
1. Reminder: This is a quick reminder that there is no rehearsal this Saturday. Also, I typed the dates wrong for our remaining Saturdays in October, but I fixed them on the Blog. (23 & 30) Have a wonderful and safe family weekend!

2.
Important Question: I also need you to consider something: I am looking into changing the time of our November 20th concert to 5pm instead of 7pm. This has to do with the Fremont High School musical -- we have students involved in that. Please email me back asap with comments on this possible change -- both positive and negative. If we find that we lose more than we gain, then we will not change the time, but it seems, at this point, a great way to remedy the issue! LYCO sounds amenable to the possibility as well.

Practicing vs Playing
I also am taking this opportunity to share this great bit of wisdom with you. It's from our LYCO Managing Director, and good friend, Diane Austin. I share it here with her permission:

Okay.....This is a conversation that just happened around the dinner table.  Sarah received a text from one of her friends to see if she could hang out for a while.  This was our conversation.....

Sarah:  Mom, can I hang out with my friend today?

Mom:  After you practice.

Dad to Sarah:  Didn't you just practice?

Sarah:  No, I was just playing.

Dad:  Is there a difference?

Sarah:  Apparently.

At first, I just busted up laughing.  Then, I thought...Wait a minute....What have I been doing all these years?    My family doesn't know the difference between the two.......*sigh*........ I realized then that the word "practice" is a bit meaningless.  We really need to substitute that word with a better one.  Study.  Study implies then that you are going to focus on something specific.  I explained to my family that if we use the word "study" then it is obvious that studying and playing are NOT the same thing.  To have a healthy balance in our music journey, we really need to have both.  Study time and playing time.

During the study time, careful thought and consideration is given to specific points.  Focused thought to join together the brain, the ear, and the body.  Our mind must know what to do, the ear must know how it should sound, and the body must know how to do it.  It can be a bit frustrating in this work to get to the point where the brain, ear, and body are totally connected.  Most of the frustration comes from the mind and ear being very quick to understand but the body is usually slower.  Therefore, when a new concept is being learned and it involves the body, SLOW practice is a must!  At a slow tempo, we can connect the three.  Once the three are connected and the skill basically mastered, then speed is
not a problem!!

During the playing time, there is to be no instruction given unless asked for.  This is the time for self expression and experimentation.  This time can really bring joy to everyone.  We have had a lot of laughs and fun times during our spontaneous play time.  Play time doesn't need to be scheduled.  It happens naturally.  Study time, however, must be scheduled.  It is real work.

I hope that this little experience taught my children that there is a difference between the two.  You many want to be sure your family understands that as well.  (Age appropriate, of course!)

Happy practicing.........oops!........Happy studying!!

-Diane

See ya on Oct 23!
