Did You See the White Elephant?

Did anyone see the white elephant? I didn't, but we're having one this Saturday after rehearsal.

Mr Dunn said he'd let us out early; plan to stay till at least 11:30.

Bring a treat to share.

The White Elephant rules are:
  1. It should be wrapped.
  2. Don't spend ANY money.
  3. It should be something from around the house.
  4. Keep it simple.
  5. Try to be funny.
Mr Blanchard ran our first winds & brass sectional last Saturday and it went very well! Winds and Brass should plan on that sectional every week, right at the beginning of the rehearsal, unless otherwise notified!

We will be running string sectionals as well, so be ready with questions.

If you missed last Saturday, I still have your TShirt, unless a friend brought it to you. They look awesome! A gift from us to you: Merry Christmas!

You should now have the following pieces in your folders:
  1. Capriccio Espagnol, Rimsky-Korsakov
  2. Aboriginal Rituals, del Borgo
  3. Bacchanale, Saint-Saens
  4. Symphony No. 5, Beethoven
  5. Duo Cello Concerto, Vivaldi (Strings only)

See ya Saturday! You are all awesome.

Press Release: November 22, 2014, Concert

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra (formerly Lincoln) will present their first concert of the season as a matinee,November 22, 2014, 3.00 pm, at Bear River High School Auditorium, 1450 South Main, Garland, Utah. Admission is free thanks to the sponsorship of Classical Strings.

The Northern Utah Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Amanda Kippen, will open the concert with selections including Wood Splitter Fanfare, Dies Irae: Fantasia, Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, and to put us in the holiday mood, Variant on an Old English Carol.

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony, conducted by Conrad Dunn, will follow with Sibelius' timeless Finlandia, a suite from Video Games Live, and Jeffrey Bishop's Aethelinda. Each concert this year will also feature a student soloist chosen as a winner of the NUYS annual concerto auditions. Krystell Taylor, violin, will be performing the stunning first movement of Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole with the orchestra.

These youth symphonies are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, dedicated to music in our communities. Visitwww.NorthernUtahYouthSymphony.org for more information.

Krystell Taylor is a senior at Fremont High School in Plain City, Utah.  She is the daughter of Joel and Amber Taylor.  She has studied violin for 15 years with Diane Austin and Elizabeth Wallace.   She is currently serving as concert mistress of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony. In 2011, Miss Taylor was selected to perform solo with the Lincoln Youth Symphony. Krystell had the opportunity during the summer of 2014 to play with the Rocky Mountain Camerata while touring Europe. She is also currently playing with the Young Artists Chamber Players under the direction of Jack Ashton. Krystell enjoys being a member of the Hot Apple Pie Fiddlers, as well as a member of a double quartet, Aspen Strings.  She has received superior ratings at ASTA festivals for the past 10 years, and has received superior ratings at Regional and State Solo and Ensembles for the past 3 years.  She loves being involved with music and participates in various school orchestras and choirs, honor orchestras, All-State Orchestras, and teaches private lessons.  Krystell has a passion for playing her violin and making music, whether it is fiddle, chamber, symphony or performing solo.

Upcoming Concert Reminders

Great Rehearsal Today!

Just a few important items:

Upcoming Concert:

Saturday, November 22, 3:00 to 4:30 pm
Bear River High School Auditorium, 1450 S Main, Garland (near Tremonton)
Admission is free (thanks to Classical Strings www.classicalstrings.net and Grover Wilhelmsen for being a returning sponsor!)

The rehearsal schedule that day is as follows:
11 am to 1:15 pm, rehearsal on stage
PLEASE come early if you can. It's not an easy auditorium to set up.

A separate email was sent a few minutes ago regarding a meal for the break while NUYCO rehearses.

Concert Dress:
  • Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.
  • Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.
Ladies, please respect the fact that audience is not interested in being distracted by your knees! Tea-length means between knee and ankle.

I found this little write-up from Macy's website rather entertaining:

Historically, a tea length dress was one that was perfect for tea time. Not as long or as ornate as an evening dress, but still brimming with class and sophistication. Ninety years ago, Emily Post described it as "a hybrid between a wrapper and a ball dress. It has a train and usually long flowing sleeves; is made of rather gorgeous materials and goes on easily, and its chief use is not for wear at the tea table so much as for dinner alone with one's family."
By definition a "tea length" dress is one that falls near the bottom of the calf, about two inches above the ankle. However, today, as dresses have become shorter, the definition of "tea length" has changed. If you are looking for a tea length dress today, you are more likely to find a hemline that falls just below the knee. Now, any dress with a hemline that falls somewhere between the bottom of the knee and the ankle can be considered "tea length." Modern tea length dresses are still sophisticated, but show just the right amount of leg for the modern woman. (http://www1.macys.com/cms/slp/2/Tea-Length-Dresses)

I'm just looking for longer than knee length when seated, something comfortable that you don't have to fight with to play your instrument.

Thanks for reading!

Let me know if you have any questions.

PS I recently misprinted the date for Abravanel Hall. It's March 2, a Monday.

NUYS

Did you have fun? I had fun, for sure. I enjoyed getting to know you, or getting to know you better. I enjoyed making music with you, attempting to whack you (or watching you attempting to whack each other), and I especially enjoyed the good laugh you provided with your skits!
Reminder
This Saturday, November 1st (8:30 to 11:00) you are invited to wear your costumes to rehearsal, just to prolong the silliness. Sounds fun, eh? Be sure to wear something that doesn't interfere with your main job, which is playing your instrument!
Concert schedule
Our concert is just a few weeks away. Here is a reminder of the schedule:
Saturday, November 22, Bear River High School Auditorium
11:00 am to 1:15 pm, NUYS Rehearsal
1:15 pm to 2:30 pm, NUYCO Rehearsal (flyers will be handed out this Saturday regarding food for this break)
3:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Combined Concert

Thank you for being flexible with our concert schedule! We are pleased to perform at multiple venues throughout Northern Utah, even if it means making some adjustments ahead of time.
For your calendars, our remaining concerts this year will be:
Saturday, February 21, Logan High School Auditorium (we are holding off scheduling the time in case we really like the timing of the November concert)
Monday, March 3, Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall, Salt Lake City
*Thursday, April 23, Box Elder High School Auditorium (If you have a foreseeable problem or unresolvable conflict with the Thursday concert next April, be sure to contact me asap.)

Lost and Found:
I have a black cardigan found on the porch between Agape and Gohio. Let me know if it's yours!

See you Saturday!

Retreat

We are really looking forward to the retreat!

Just a couple notes:
If you get this email in time and would like to bring a snack or treat to share for Saturday afternoon, that would be great. Our lunch is at 12:30, and then we have rehearsal, so we will be possibly hungry when it's time to pack up and go home. The camp is feeding us three meals, Friday dinner, and Saturday breakfast and lunch, but not Saturday dinner, so if you are like me, you might want a bit of something after Saturday afternoon rehearsal.

We are looking for someone to help transport a string bass, possibly to camp on Friday, and for sure home from camp on Saturday. The bass player lives east of the Lowe's on Washington and North Street. Please let me know if you can swing that direction either on your way, or on your way home. Thanks!

Don't forget to bring a music stand, and a jacket. It gets chilly up there at night.

We have a parent organizing food for the break in between. Stay on the lookout for announcements about this. If you would like to volunteer to help, let me know.

The concert will be sponsored by Classical Strings. You may have noticed Grover Wilhelmsen when he came and played bass with us last Saturday. He is the owner of Classical Strings, our sponsor for this concert.

Forms, Tuition, Retreat, FOOD, etc.

Greetings!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for turning in the Acceptance, Release and Payment form. Thank you to all who have already done this.

Forms:
With our retreat coming up in just 3 weeks, don't forget your retreat forms tomorrow. There is a permission slip, and also an optional food suggestions form included at the bottom of the general information sheet. I automatically count everyone as "going" unless they tell me otherwise. Some people have already talked to me.

Important Food Announcement & Inquiry:
Our food committee head cooks from last year have discovered they will be unable to cook for the retreat this year. We have two options: Find someone else, or hire the Camp UTABA staff to provide the food for us. If there is anyone out there willing or able to feed upwards of 80 people for 24 hours, please contact me asap. (The camp kitchen is not available to us if we cater our own meals.)

However, we are not opposed to working with the camp staff for our menu needs, so don't feel too badly if you can't help out. I will have to know ASAP to coordinate our plans with them.

Looking forward to a great rehearsal tomorrow!
