Press Release: Season Finale Concert

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestras will present their season finale concert Monday, May 17th, 2021, at 5:30 pm, at Box Elder High School. Admission is free, thanks to our season sponsors, and there are no limits to the size of the audience as long as masks are worn properly for the whole time, and we contact-trace the audience. Contact tracing is simple - just visit our audience registration post on our website https://www.northernutahyouthsymphony.org/2021/05/audienceregistration.html.

The Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Nathan West will open the concert with The Three B's: arrangements of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, Brahms Themes from Symphony No. 1, and Beethoven's King Stephan Overture.

The Youth Symphony will then take the stage, featuring their brass and percussion in Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, then featuring many soloists from the orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, and Richard Wagner's Overture to Die Meistersinger. There will also be a special feature of a string quartet from members of the orchestra, and their concert master, Natalie Nef, will perform Weiniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2.

The orchestras are a project of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, based in Brigham City, and supported by the George S and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, Utah Arts & Museums with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Box Elder Tourism Tax Advisory Board. Musicians come largely from Cache, Weber and Box Elder Counties. Thank you to their business sponsors for this season: Classical Strings, Edge Orthodontics, BrainTrainUT, PetsFirst! Wellness Center, and Curtis Financial & Tax Management, Inc.

Featured soloist Natalie Nef:
Natalie is a senior at Weber High School.  Natalie is a member of the Weber High School varsity swim team (four time letterman), soccer team (defender of the year and team captain), and honor society. Natalie has been school concert master for six years. She has received superior marks at region and state solo and ensemble in piano and violin for 3 years. She has been in the district high school honor orchestra for ten years and All State Orchestra. Natalie has received superior marks at ASTA competitions at Utah State and Weber State multiple times. Natalie has competed at federation at the University of Utah for four years scoring superior ratings. She was the Ogden Youth Symphony Concerto winner in 2017, where she soloed with them and the Weber State University Symphony. Natalie won the Ogden Symphony Ballet Youth Benefit Concert Competition 2017 and 2019. She was also the recipient of the Jean Poll music scholarship in 2017 and took second in the American Protégé International Concerto competition 2018, 2019, and 2020. Natalie was able to solo at Carnegie Hall June 2018, May 2019, and will be performing December 2021. Natalie has been a UTMA winner in both piano and violin. She has been a member of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony for seven years, with whom she has won their concerto competition twice.  Natalie also has played with the New American Philharmonic. She also is an accomplished piano and organ player. She studies violin under David Porter. Natalie will be continuing her violin studies at the Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University, where she received the Presidential Scholarship.

Concert Audience Registration

Hello all! The time has come, for the third time, to register your concert attendees!

The concert is finalized! (Thanks, Julie!) It is Monday, May 17, at 5:30 PM at Box Elder High School. We get to have a normal sized audience - wahoo - because of two reasons: 1) we will contact trace everyone, just as before, and everyone will wear a mask, just as before. You guys know the drill. Thanks for this amazing year! We feel so fortunate.

There is a 10 person limit per family. If we get close to overbooking, we will let you know! Invite anyone you would like! Please remind them to wear masks the entire time

We also need extra check-in people and ushers to handle the larger audience, plus volunteers to strike the stage at the end. Please either fill out the volunteer sheet if you are interested or email or text me!

Here is the Volunteer sheet!

Thanks again! What an excellent year this has been.

Audience Registration Begins NOW!

Audience Registration for our May 17th concert begins now!

The concert is Monday, May 17th, at 5:30 pm at Box Elder High School. We have permission to invite a normal sized audience!

There is basically no limit to how many people you can invite or bring, as long as we contact-trace the audience, and everyone wears a mask. If it looks like we're going to overbook the place, I'll let you know!

I'm putting a 10 person limit per family and as long as we don't go over about 750 people in the audience (which I don't think we've ever done in a normal year), then we're good to go! Feel free to ask for more seats in the comments. But don't claim seats that you won't be using!

Let's build a great big awesome audience!

The short version:
  • Invite anyone you want!
  • Have them register ahead of time.
  • Make sure they know they have to wear masks the entire time because the social distance restrictions have been lifted.

Volunteers Needed
We will also need extra check-in people and ushers to handle the larger audience, plus volunteers to strike the stage at the end.

Please consider signing up to help with this!

Here is the Volunteer sheet!

If you can see it but can't figure out how to sign up, just reply to this email and let me know what you want to sign up for... I'll add you to the list.

Thanks, everyone, for participating in this miraculous season!

Schedule for the Concert Day (This is a change!)
In coordination with a couple schools who have conflicts on the day of our concert, and being proactive about other conflicts that might come up, we have  made the following plan for the May 17th Concert at Box Elder High School:
3:00 pm, set up
3:30 pm, NUYS Short Sound-check Rehearsal
4:15 pm, NUYCO Short Sound-check Rehearsal
5:00 to 6:30 pm, Concert
Hopefully this gives everyone enough lead time to participate fully. This should eliminate the conflicts that we know about (South Cache MS), and also take care of conflicts we don't know about. For those who do have a concert at 7 pm at WHS, you will be excused from the warm-up call time. That's a good thing! We neeeeed you as much as Mr W neeeeeds you!!!

One other note:
The state-wide mask mandate is scheduled to expire April 10th. However, we will continue to follow the same guidelines we've already been using.

Thanks, everyone! You are wonderful! Thanks for making this our Miracle Year!

See you tomorrow.... I hope you've enjoyed your spring break, or will be enjoying it soon, depending on your school schedule. If you are in town during any of this, please be sure to come to rehearsal.

And, as always, use the Attendance Form if you will be missing rehearsal... like if you are sick or have been quarantined (or get to go somewhere).

:)

Concert: Audience Registration Drive and other info

Greetings!
It's time to register our audience! Please read this whole email, and contact me if you have any questions, and get your guests to fill out the form. I've heard other groups could only have 2 spectators, so the fact that we are doing 4 is pretty cool.

Please note this is 4 spectators PER FAMILY and not PER PERFORMER. The auditorium is smaller than our previous venue, so this is the best solution I could come up with. Thank you!

Concert details
Date: Saturday, 27 February 2021
Time: 3:30 pm (ending time - about 4:45 pm)
Location: Mount Logan Middle School, 875 N 200 E, Logan UT 84321

Schedule for the day:
Setup: 11:00 am
NUYS On-Stage Rehearsal: 11:30 am to about 1:45 pm
NUYCO On-Stage Rehearsal: 2:00 to 3:00 pm
Volunteer check-in & ushers arrive 2:15 pm
Audience seating begins: 2:30 pm
Call time for the concert: 3:00 pm
CONCERT: 3:30 pm

Audience registration:
The audience will be pre-registered in groups of up to 4 people. Each family may have 4 seats with an option to request more seats in the comments (this is a change from last time when we said each performer). We will let you know the week of the concert if the extra seats you requested will be available to you.

If a family has no spectators coming to the concert, we still need you to fill out the form and choose "0" for your number. Then we know you have responded and that your seats are available for others. That was a missing aspect of our registration last time. Thank you for your cooperation! You are wonderful!

Volunteers:
You can volunteer to check in the audience, usher (and mark the map), and also to clean up, at this volunteer spreadsheet link

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

Please let me know if you have questions. If you have a question, others probably have that question too. 🎵

Thanks!
Julie

NUYCO - Concert Announcements

Hello! I've tried to reduce the number of emails lately, but now we are nearing a concert! Prepare for a few emails in the next couple of weeks. :)

We will start the audience registration project on Monday, so watch for that.

We are considering setting the concert time on February 27 at Mount Logan Middle School for 3:30 PM. If you have an insurmountable issue with that time, PLEASE let me know TODAY. Hypothetically, that would put the NUYCO stage rehearsal time from 2-3.

Thanks!

Yes! We have Rehearsal... and other Announcements - NUYS

Greetings!

Yes! We have rehearsal tomorrow morning. My apologies for the delay getting this email out, especially on a holiday weekend.

We will start our audience registration drive this MONDAY, so watch for that info in your email. Still working on numbers, but getting close....

We are considering setting the concert time on Feb 27 at Mount Logan Middle School for 3:30 pm.  Reply to this email immediately if you have a problem with that time. It would put our setup at 11:00, Rehearsal 11:30 to 1:45, NUYCO rehearsal 2 to 3, and the concert at 3:30. THIS IS STILL HYPOTHETICAL. Please contact me if you have an insurmountable issue with this, especially if you can't make the concert. (We could potentially set it later, but we are already aware of issues that preclude its being earlier.)

Tomorrow's rehearsal
8:00 am ~ Doors Unlock, come help set up!
8:20 am ~ Set up for sectionals and warm up
8:30 am ~ Go straight to sectionals
Woodwinds and Brass, to their normal spaces
Violin 1 in the stage area
Violin 2 in the area across from the Woodwinds (Northwest)
Viola in the (you guessed it) entrance hallway
Cellos in the Gym
Bass with cellos or on your own
Strings: You may be called back earlier than 9:30, but plan to spend the whole hour. Come with questions, and be bold - ask for fingerings!
9:30 am Full Orchestra - probably in this order:
Dvorak
Brahms
Del Borgo
Bloch (at 10:30 for the Rose the harpist)

Okay, folks! Let's take this by storm! (BTW we are aware of the weather as well, so watch for announcements).

As usual, if you are sick with anything, or quarantined, stay home! Use the attendance form to keep me sane. Because you like me, right?

Blessings,
Julie

NUYS Concert Details

 Greetings!

Surely you've all been wishing for this email. Please, please read the whole thing, and please let me know if you need clarification or have any questions (after you've read it!).

Tomorrow is our concert!

Masks
Masks are required in the building for EVERYONE, including the audience (let them know). If you walk in, you have a mask on. We have black masks for you if you don't have one, and will write your name in whichever one you use (with a sharpie) and collect them after. We will wash and reuse them at our other concerts. You may also provide your own black mask, if you like.

For those who play wind and brass instruments, you may remove your mask after you are on stage ready to play, or in the band room warming up.

At the one other performance OHS allowed (last week), there were problems with this mask requirement, especially in the lobby. Please comply. We get to have an audience because we are promising to comply.

Schedule for the day:
9:30 Set Up - We will be setting up the stage.
It will be great to have a few people there helping, and not just in the band room warming up their instruments. Cases go in the band room, BTW.
10:00 NUYS Rehearsal - starting with the fewest people and working our way up
10:00 Mozart (Call time 9:30)
10:25 Saint-Saens (Call time 9:55)
10:50 Star Wars, Broadway and Sleigh Ride (not necessarily in that order) (Call time 10:20)
12:15-1:30 Your break
Food guidelines: Bring your own food, it's best if you don't plan to leave and come back. No drinks except water. NO FOOD in the band room, or anywhere in the auditorium. Find a place to eat along the hallways. Clean up after yourself. ;)
NUYCO will rehearse on stage at 12:30
12:30 Call time for Ushers and Check-in People.
Meet me in the lobby. We will have clipboards and instructions for you.
1:00 to 2:00 Seating of the audience
This starts before NUYCO is finished, so be respectful and quiet.
I have a separate novel below with details.
2:00 Concert
After the concert you will go back to the band room, gather your things, follow any sanitizing instructions, and meet your families outside.
Volunteers who signed up to clean up and strike the stage, meet us on the stage! Thank you!

Performance order
Salute to Broadway
Clarinet Concerto - Mozart
Cello Concerto - Saint-Saens
Star Wars Through the Years
Sleigh Ride

Music & Folders
We will collect your folders with all the music after this concert. Do not leave the building with your folder. If you happen to keep personal music in your folder, pull it out tonight. You will get your same folder back January 9th at our next rehearsal with new music.

Clothing
Wear your concert attire for the dress rehearsal so we can take "Concert Pictures" without disturbing the concert later. Here's the official description of what to wear.
Thank you. Questions about what to wear? Reply to this email and ask.

Programs
Our programs are digital for this concert, but there is a special keepsake printed program for each participant. We will hand them out tomorrow. But there will be no printed programs handed out to the audience. The program is a blog post, optimized to be easy to read on a phone. It's already up, if you want to look. Here's the link. We will have QR codes at the entrances of the auditorium, or your audience members can just go to the youth symphony website. It was posted yesterday.

Seating of the Audience
There will be 3 volunteers checking in pre-registered audience groups. They will look "official" because they have clipboards, and will be just inside the south door, as indicated on the map below. (There is also an ADA door, if you need it, just to the east and around the corner from that door.) We need all the audience members to come early enough to be in their seats by 1:45.

If our check-in mavens encounter a group that has not pre-registered, that group will have to stand aside and register using a cell phone at this link. There will be a QR code posted for this possibility.

Once checked in, each member of the group will get a little sticker to put on their shirt, like at the hospital. Cool, eh?

I think our registration is pretty much complete. At this point, there are a few extra seats. If you want to bring an extra person or two but did not already request it, contact me directly and I can increase the number in your group, up to a certain point when I'll have to close this option.

Here's the biggie: Once checked in, your group can either go upstairs to the balcony, or head directly into the main level of the auditorium. They will choose their own seats with the following (simple!) procedures:
They will not sit in closed rows (every other row is closed)
They will assure that there are at least 3 seats between groups
After they are seated, they will wave an usher over and make sure their group is entered on the auditorium map (by the contact name for the group)

Ogden High
Below is a picture of the area directly around Ogden High School. Here is a google map link to the school. The orange shaded areas are parking areas. The south door must be used to enter the school. This is where the audience check in will happen, just inside those doors.

Also on the map is the location where the audience will end up after the concert, just to give some orientation of where to go to find their car! The audience may wait in the courtyard to meet their musicians, or make other arrangements.

The Future
After tomorrow, why would we worry about the future? Haha!
We will not be meeting during the holiday break.
Our next rehearsal is January 9th.
See you then, and Happy Holidays! 🎶
