NUYCO - See you tomorrow!

 Hi families!

Woohoo, rehearsals start tomorrow! We are so excited to start our new year. If you would like to get to know the specialists, Mr. West (our conductor), and me, check out this document with bios and photos!

LOCATION: Promontory School Library, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry (the library is right across the hall from the gym where NUYS will be rehearsing - follow the music and you will find us!), 9:30 - 11:00 AM (NUYS will meet 8:30-11). You are welcome to bring your own music stand but we will have one set up for you already. No food or drink (besides water) is allowed in the library.

MUSIC: For this concert, we will be playing the Italian Folk Festival arr. Bullock and Abduction from the Seraglio by Mozart. Mr. West will be deciding on a 3rd piece in the near future!

RECRUITMENT: Please recruit more members! We could really use more violas especially, but would gratefully accept any instrument. NUYS could also use basically any instrument!

PARENT MEETING: Our parent meeting Forum and Q&A is next week, Sept. 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also to collect tuition. You are welcome to turn in forms and payments tomorrow if that is more convenient.

ATTENDANCE: If you will be missing a rehearsal anytime between tomorrow and April, please fill out our handy Attendance Form! It's linked at the bottom of all my emails. If you are sick for any reason at any time, please fill out the form and stay home.

CONCERT: Our first concert will be Friday, November 12, at Ogden High School. Yes, Friday - check your calendars. If you have a conflict, please tell me what time would work best for you to perform. The concerts at Ogden High are always my favorite - it's an amazing venue and you don't want to miss it! Please keep Thursday, November 11, open as well. We may need an extra rehearsal that evening to prepare for the concert the next day.

Awesome! See you tomorrow! Please email or text me with any questions. 435.452.8173

See You Tomorrow!

At long last, rehearsals begin tomorrow! So excited to see everyone. This is the part that makes it all worth it.

Location: Promontory School, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry
Time: 8:30 to 11:00 am

We will be sight-reading tomorrow. Here are the pieces, with youtube links...

Beethoven's 6th Symphony, more than one movement, to be determined.

Russian Christmas Music by Alfred Reed
This link is for the concert band version. I assure you we will be playing the full orchestra version. If anyone finds a recording of the full orchestra version, please share the link with me! Such a cool piece!

Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saens. We will be playing the first movement, which is roughly 8 1/2 minutes in this version.
Congrats to Hugues Herpin Lemonnier, our soloist!

Set up
When you arrive, music stands will be set up for you - your folders will be on your stands.

If you can come early to set up chairs, please do. The computerized doors will unlock at 8 am, and I will be there [much] earlier, just getting everything ready.

Parent Meeting
Reminder that our parent meeting Forum and Q&A will be next week, Sept 25, at 11:15. Our bookkeeper will be there also, to collect tuition. You may also turn in forms and payments at tomorrow's rehearsal, if that works better for you.

Recruiting
Recruit your friends! You don't really want me playing viola with you. Really. What happened to all the violas? There were so many last year!  We need another Clarinet, 3 more French Horns, 2 more Trumpets, and another Trombone.... And more cellos. We would even accept more violins... ðŸ˜‰

Attendance
If you are playing in a Marching Band, or in a Pit Orchestra, or on a Swim Team, or you already know when that family wedding is going to be, I need you to go into the Attendance Form and fill it out multiple times for all the times you will be missing.

I know there are more people that need to do this. After you submit for one date, it will ask you if you would like to submit another form. It's pretty easy and will give us a better picture of what rehearsals are going to look like. Thanks so much!

If you are sick for any reason (not just COVID symptoms), or you've been quarantined, the attendance form is also the best way to let me know. The system notifies me immediately when someone fills out the form, so you can even fill it out tomorrow morning if you wake up feeling ill.

Concert - Important!!!!
Our first concert will be Friday, 12 November, 2021 at Ogden High. Yes, you read that correctly. It's on a Friday. Please Please Please check calendars and get back with me so we can set a time when everyone can be there to perform! I promise you it's worth it to work this out. It's such a beautiful venue!

Please keep Thursday 11 November open as well, and let us know if evening or earlier would work for you. We are anticipating the need for an extra rehearsal that day so we have a good feeling of momentum going into the Friday concert. Ask your band teachers, etc. It is Veteran's Day and there may be issues with rehearsal time, so let's work together to pick the best time.

Thanks, and let's make this a most exquisitely wonderful year!

Rehearsal Time Change - NUYCO

Hi families!

Extended Rehearsal: Maestro West has asked for an extended rehearsal on Saturday. We will start rehearsing at 9:15 AM and will finish at the normal time, 11:15 AM. We will cover all four pieces. The extended rehearsal is to make up for the time we usually rehearse at retreat. Rehearsal will run as follows...

9:15-10 full rehearsal
10-10:30 sectionals
10:30-11:15 full rehearsal

Of course, we will have at least one break in there. All NUYCO members are welcome to bring a non-crumbly snack to eat and a water bottle to drink. And it is Halloween - so feel free to dress up!

Private Teacher List: If you are looking for a private teacher for your child, look no further! I've created an extensive list of teachers between southeastern Idaho and northern Utah. If you would like to access the list on a laptop, use this link. If you are using a phone, use this link

Thanks for helping your NUYCO members stay committed! Our concert will really be awesome.

Reminders and Stuff

Greetings!

Who Is This?
First, whoever gave me the Texas Roadhouse Gift Cards for the Silent Auction, THANK YOU, but I'm not sure who it was! Duh! Please tell me who you are so you get 2 entries into the $100 drawing!

Gala Tickets
We (Read: Julie and Doris) are getting nervous (seems like an annual thing) about ticket sales for the Gala (April 9, 6 pm, BC Senior Center, $15). With the deadline for the caterer looming, we need to sell about 120 more tickets before next Tuesday.

Can you help? I have set up a Facebook event so it's easy for you to spread the word. If you don't have enough tickets, go ahead and collect money, turn it in to Josie on Saturday and pick up tickets then.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, ask your student for the envelope in their folder with tickets and instructions. Tickets are numbered. All unsold tickets must be returned before the event.

Thanks!

Here is the Facebook event link. I even spent $11 and "boosted" the post. Never have I done such a strange thing!

Silent Auction
If you are negotiating with your employer (like Sydnee did with Papa Murphy's) or another business for a silent auction item, it's not too late! Go for it! Here is the letter that we have been using to convince people to donate.

Frankly, I'm embarrassed to say, I don't think I've shared this letter with enough people, but it works. Here's Proof: Check out the updated list of silent auction items here. It's all in one post. I've been updating it.

Rehearsal Schedule
Reminder that this Saturday's rehearsal is only 8 to 10 am. Please be early, and come ready to focus and work hard. :)

Baskets
Oh, and thanks for the great Basket Response last Saturday. When you read through the list below, if I have your item in the wrong category, let me know. Also, two of the groups.... well, they need more STUFF, and it's not hard to get more than NOTHING, so bring something! :)

13 April 2014

Schedule for Saturday April 19

Greetings!

So excited for this final concert! Everyone has worked so hard, and I think we are in for a Brahms miracle. Keep doing your part to make the miracle happen, and let's make amazing music this Saturday. Please contact me asap if you are for some reason not playing in the concert. I like the program to be accurate!

All the festivities this Saturday are at or very near Bear River High School, in the Tremonton/Garland area. This is an historic concert. I don't believe LYS has ever performed at BRHS before. If you'd like to see the exact door you will need to enter for the auditorium, click here for a google map link

Here is a very close approximation of what will be happening, and when. This is subject to change, but please just be there and bring your instrument, concert attire, and your food assignment for the party and all will be amazing! (Flier with said food assignments for party will be coming with a separate email).

12 noon -- Doors open; early birds arrive and begin set-up (that's my call time, and whoever else wants to come help!)

12:30 call time for LYS rehearsal

12.45 LYS Rehearsal

2:15 call time for LYCO

2:30 LYCO joins LYS rehearsal for Lord of the Dance

3.00 LYS dismissed/LYCO rehearsal continues.

4:00 (or earlier) LYCO dismissed

3-4.30 social/end-of year party at pavilion (complete with volleyball net and baseball diamond) behind the the church at 660 North 300 East, Tremonton, for LYS (and LYCO when they arrive). Leave your instrument, extra stuff, etc, at the school. See flier and separate email for more details.

4:30 is the call time for concert. Please be on time so you can be dressed and ready. Dress is regular "Concert Black". If you are not sure what this means, check here on the website under Lincoln Youth Symphony "formal".

5:00 Concert

The concert will be over before 6:30 pm.

Questions? Reply to this email, or call/text me at 435.740.4335.

Rehearsal Schedule

Greetings!

In case you missed the announcement, if you have the Ruslan and Ludmila by Glinka, do not worry about practicing it. We will play it another time. The only pieces we will be playing in the concert are the Brahms, the MacDowell, and Lord of the Dance.

Please be diligent about practicing the Academic Festival Overture by Brahms. If you haven't looked up the music and listened, you may follow this youtube link to hear it: http://youtu.be/52YCz27S7ZE. Some ideas:
1. Follow along in your music as you listen. (Active listening)
2. Just listen, over and over again, until you are really familiar with it. (passive listening -- what I'm doing right now!)
3. Practice on your own. Work on small sections. Don't try to practice the whole thing from beginning to end.
4. Set up a speaker and try playing along with the recording. (This is hard since you can't see the conductor!)

Here is the schedule for the next three weeks:

April 5, Regular Rehearsal, 8:30 to 11:00 am, Promontory School
(Tip: If you care, General Conference is rebroadcast at noon on KBYU.)

1. Mrs Horne will be there again to work with woodwinds and brass, combined.

2. I know this is Spring Break for several. Please let me know if you will be out of town, and my deepest gratitude to those who will be there! We need you if at all possible.

3. Our pianist, Josh Musselman, will be there to work on the MacDowell. Please prepare by listening to the recording, as described for the Brahms, above. Here is the link from a previous email:
MacDowell Piano Concerto No 2, First Movement
(Searched: MacDowell Piano Concerto 2)
http://youtu.be/s0caoJXIuXQ (This is a live recording of the whole concerto. We are only playing the first movement which ends at 14:43 on this video)

April 12, Regular Rehearsal, 8:30 to 11:30 am, Promontory School
This is our last regular rehearsal before the concert. Again, the pianist will be there. LYCO will also be invited to the last part of this rehearsal to practice Lord of the Dance, so please note that we are going until 11:30.

April 19, Final Rehearsals and Concert.
The schedule for the day will be published soon via a separate email. Please block out all afternoon, 12:30 pm till 6:30 pm.

Did you know that www.lincolnyouthsymphony.com is a blog? All previous emails are published there, and they are searchable! Go check it out. :)

LYS Music, Schedule, etc

Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and made it to Saturday's rehearsal! Bravo. I hope all made it home safely. It's been quite a weekend, weather-wise!

Thank you to all who performed in the Nov 23 concert. You all did a great job, and everyone who played turned in their music (which made me really really happy). If you didn't play in the concert and haven't turned in your music, please do so. My least favorite job is hunting down music!!!!

New Music:

We have collected the Frescobaldi and the Respighi, and in addition to keeping the Egmont Overture and Bounty Hunter (which we may play at Abravanel Hall on March 3), we have handed out the following for the February 1 Concerto Concert:
    • Hummel's Trumpet Concerto (3rd Movement)
to be performed by our own Krystal Matheson
    • Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A Minor (3rd Movement)
to be performed by LYCO's Kristene Murrow
    • Mozart's Piano Concerto no 23 (3rd Movement)
to be performed by David Ban
    • Hardiman's Lord of the Dance
    • Schubert's Rosamunde Overture
and next week we will hand out one other piece, Themes from Also Sprach Zarathustra, which we sightread this week and the brass players were pretty excited about.

We have one other concerto on order; it's for the April concert but the music is quite difficult, so we will need to start working on it asap. It is
    • MacDowell's Piano Concerto no. 2 (1st movement) to be performed by Joshua Musselman (some of you may remember him -- he performed the Liszt Piano Concerto with us two years ago).
Schedule:

We will have one other regular rehearsal this year -- December 14, 8:30 to 11:00 am at Promontory, and then we have a couple weeks off for the holidays. We will resume January 4, and rehearse every week until our next concert, which is coming right up on February 1.

Please let us know when you won't be at rehearsal (and why). The easiest way to do this is by replying to this email, or sending a text to Julie at 435 740 4335.

Information will be available soon regarding the upcoming Gala Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction scheduled for March 15.

Thanks!

Details for this Saturday's Concert

Schedule:

Morning rehearsal: 8:30-11:00am, Box Elder Middle School, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City (LYCO rehearses right after us, 11-12)

Concert Call Time: 4:30pm

Concert begins: 5:00pm (see the press release for additional information)

Sponsor:

Notice the ad I put up on the website for the sponsor for this concert. Classical Strings is making it possible for free admission to the concert!

Recording:

We do not have an official recording arranged for this concert. If you are making a recording, please let me know if you are willing to share. A decent digital video camera actually makes a very nice sound recording!

Audience:

Let's fill the auditorium! Invite friends and family. Also, please let your guests know that there are people recording the concert, so concert etiquette is appreciated.

Clothing:

You do not need to dress up for the dress rehearsal; it's just "dress" because it's on the stage. Concert dress for the evening is as follows:

Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.

Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.

Music Folders:

Please be prepared to turn in your music after the concert in the folder I gave you. If you are not using it on the stand during the concert, you can even hand it to me before the concert. I get really excited when everyone hands in their music at once. It just makes my day!  I will fill your folder with new music during the holiday.

Next Rehearsal:

We will be taking Thanksgiving weekend off, and starting rehearsals again December 7th, at Promontory School, 8:30-11:00am.

LYS: Rehearsal Time Change

This year's regular Saturday rehearsals will begin at 8:30 am and end at 11:00 am. This is a time adjustment from last year, and will hopefully accommodate more people's Saturday plans.

Sam, our new conductor, has requested this change to better serve you! So, bleary-eyed or not, we are starting at 8:30! :)
