NUYS: Congratulations and Gratitude!

Dear Musicians of the Awesome NUYS!

I hope everyone feels great about what they have done this weekend.

Congratulations on a fantastic concert! I had many positive comments and congratulations, especially for Night on Bald Mountain, which came off so well! Soloists were fabulous, and it was hot!

Congratulations specifically to Sarah Francis for your superb, sensitive performance of the Mendelssohn! Sarah, we could truly feel your joy. It was amazing!

Congratulations to the orchestra for following so well during the Mendelssohn.

Thanks to Tom, Chad, Eric and Christie. You all do whatever needs to be done - on and off the stage - to support these youth, and we would not be where we are without you. Your contribution is valuable and noticed and appreciated.

Big thanks to Julie, for all she did, and all she does. Without her there's no way this can happen.

Thank you to those who helped set up and take down, who hauled equipment, and who just stayed in the auditorium on standby in case we needed help with anything.

Many hands make light work, but many minds make that work incredible. I witnessed that this weekend, and I thank you!

Greetings!

You are all awesome! I hope you know how much I love this group and how much you each mean to me.

I saw miracles Saturday as we put together this concert, and I hope you know you are involved in something special.

I ask you a favor. Please go to the Volunteer Form and log your volunteer hours for anything you've done for us, anytime from the beginning of the year to now. Did you help set up? Help take down? Pick up the auditorium? Count the audience? Haul equipment? Print music?

Here is the link to the Volunteer Follow-up Form. If it doesn't work or you're having trouble with it, just email me. I can fill it out for you. This helps us so much at the end of the year when we write grants.

My heartfelt wishes to you for a fabulous Thanksgiving! We'll see you Saturday, December 2, 8:30 am for regular rehearsal with all-new music. (If you are playing in Messiah, we'll see you before that - Thursday, November 30, 7 pm.)

Utah Symphony Principal Harpist Louise Vickerman is a licensed pilot and part of the Flying Musicians Association. They have a scholarship program open to high school juniors & seniors in band, orchestra or choir, which funds initial flight training to a young musician who wants to learn to fly. Louise has asked me to forward the scholarship information throughout the state. I'm sending it to youth orchestra directors with the hope you will share this information with the juniors and seniors in your orchestras. And I'm sending it to District Arts Coordinators to ask you to forward it to the high school music teachers in your districts.

2:00 to 3:00 PM: Chamber Dress Rehearsal in the Auditorium

3:30 PM: Concert

Food instructions

If you need a quick snack before the concert, please bring one with you.

NO FOOD whatsoever in the Auditorium or in the stage area, and NO FOOD in the band room.

You may eat in the hallways. Please bring water instead of sticky drinks.

Turn in Music Folders

We will be collecting all folders at this concert. They will be returned to you at the next rehearsal with new orchestra music in them. Please remove personal items from your folders if you want said items between November 18 and the next rehearsal on December 2.

There will be a tote box backstage to collect folders. If you are not using music onstage during the concert, you may turn in your folder by placing it in the box before the concert.

Concert Attire

Just a reminder about concert attire.

For the concert:

White on top, black on the bottom.

Females: Black skirt, white blouse or dress shirt, black tights, black shoes.

Male: Black slacks, black socks and black shoes, white dress shirt, tie

Audience Etiquette

The following items are truly important. Please let your guests know!

We provide the music, you provide the silence.

Noisy children and babies (if they come) should be seated with their parents, close to the aisles, in order to remove them from the auditorium quickly should they become distracting to other audience members.

If you arrive during a piece of music, please remain in the back or outside the auditorium until applause indicates the piece has ended. Then find your seats quickly.

If you are not sure when to applaud, just watch the conductor. He will put his hands down and turn around to face the audience. That's your signal for warm and happy applause.

No whooping or shouting names, cat calling. This is not a sports event.

Keep your phones off or silent, and enjoy the live concert.

The Chamber Orchestra will join the audience during the Youth Symphony performance. We need to set the example of how to be a great audience!

Parking

Ogden High School is a city school and depending on when you arrive, you may need to park along the street through the block on Tyler Ave. Please advise your guests to leave plenty of time to find parking and walk to the auditorium. The concert will begin on time.

11:00 AM: Set Up begins.

If you are available, arrive early and help.

12:00 NOON: Dress rehearsal begins.

About 2:00 PM: Rehearsal ends. Chamber Orchestra rehearsal begins.

2:00 to 3:00 PM: During this time, you can change for the concert, eat, enjoy friends. There are no restaurants in walking distance. We request you stay on campus. Bring a snack or sack lunch (see Food Instructions)

3:30 PM: Concert

Two Opportunities: A Concerto Competition and a Scholarship

First Opportunity:

The Utah Philharmonic is running their annual concerto competition. If you decide to enter, please add to the "special considerations" box a request to audition no earlier than 1 pm so you have time to attend rehearsal that day as well. Submitting your application early will also give them a chance to schedule that way.

Our 14th Annual Concerto Competition - registration is now open!

Dear Ms Julie Gardner and Ms Jenny Murrow –

Hello. My name is Roger Morandi. I am UPO Board Secretary and principal oboe with the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra, a multi-community orchestra based in the southern Salt Lake valley in Bluffdale, UT.

The Utah Philharmonic Orchestra is excited to announce that the UPO's 2018 Concerto Competition is open for registration!

Winners of our Fourteenth Annual Concerto Competition will be invited to perform with the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra at our Spotlight Spectacular concert in May 2018.

I hope you are willing to make this opportunity available to your Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Northern Utah Chamber Orchestra students, private and school students, other music instructors and musician friends.

I have attached a JPG file of our Concerto Competition Announcement Poster to this email. Please forward this email to any student or performer you know who would like to compete for the opportunity to solo with a live orchestra. Alternatively, the poster can be printed to be distributed at rehearsals, hung on your bulletin board or placed anywhere that interested students may pick one up.

Register by going to www.utahphil.org/concerto and clicking on Register Online. Applicants are now able to complete the entire registration process on-line, no mailing required. The registration deadline is Monday, January 15, 2018. Late registration is available after the deadline until the day of the competition with anadditional $10.00 late fee. The competition date is scheduled on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Riverton Music Store, 9491 S 255 W, Sandy, UT.

Here is some basic information about the competition.
We have five competition categories:
Youth Instrumentalists and Vocalists - age 12 and under;
Junior Instrumentalists - ages 13 to 16;
Senior Instrumentalists - ages 17 to 20;
Adult/Open Instrumentalists - age 21 and over;
Vocalists - age 13 and over.

Each category will be judged by a panel of three judges selected from members of our Symphony and from working music professionals along the Wasatch Front. In addition to the five category winners, our judges have the option to invite the Youth category runner-up to perform.

You can find complete competition details, an informative FAQ page and a link to the online registration page at www.utahphil.org/concerto. We also have a list of ineligible works for 2018. This list includes the works performed by the winners of the last two years of competition. These works are excluded from competition to increase variety and to avoid repetition of the same piece every year. Applicants should be sure to review this list before registering to avoid any confusion.

Press Release:

Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestras will present their first concert of the 2017-2018 Season, Saturday, November 18, 2017, 3:30 pm at Ogden High School. Admission is free, thanks to our sponsors including Classical Strings and On Track Counseling (Aaron Gardner - Psychotherapist and Neurofeedback, Logan and Ogden).

The Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Nathan West, will open the concert with a Latin-Themed program including Christopher's Fiesta for Strings, Yradier's La Paloma, Graf's arrangement of Yellow Bird, and Hall's Dancing in the Street.

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony, conducted by Conrad Dunn, will then take the stage to perform Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, Highlights from "Wicked", A Canadian Brass Christmas, and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto featuring Sarah Francis, a long-time member of the youth symphony.

Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestras are projects of Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported in part by the George S and Dolores Dore Eccles foundation, and the Utah Division of Arts and Museums with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Sarah Francis has been studying violin with Elissa Krebs for 11 years, and has been a member of Northern Utah Youth Symphony for the past five years. She is a junior at Ogden High School, where she has been serving as concertmaster of the Camerata Orchestra for two years. She currently tutors orchestra students at Mount Ogden Junior High School. While at Ogden High School, she has participated in All State Orchestra, and received superior ratings at regional and state solo and ensemble festivals, and, she was the concertmaster for the 2017 Weber State University Honor Orchestra. She loves chamber music. One of her favorite experiences has been participating in summer chamber music camps coached by the Fry Street Quartet and Lee Trio. She currently plays in a violin trio with the Junction City Music School. She has enjoyed participating in master classes and workshops with violinists Sarah Tasker, Chloe Trevor, and Jenny Oaks Baker. She is a volunteer for the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association Youth Guild, and also a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys participating in musical theater productions, fiddling with friends, attending seminary, storytelling, and teaching piano.
