Chamber Parent Meeting & Follow-up

Welcome!

It has already been a joy to work with you all as we have put this year's orchestra together. Thank you for your support of this program! We would be nothing without our musicians and their families.

We have been hearing from people this week about filling in our chamber orchestra! Thank you for your recruiting efforts! We are currently at about 15 and would like the orchestra to double. Nathan West has some amazing music planned, and a wonderful  vision for where the Chamber orchestra is going as more effective preparation for youth symphony. There is magic in any orchestra when it reaches "critical mass" and the youth need to feel the camaraderie of a larger group of committed musicians.  Please continue your efforts!!

September 30 adjusted rehearsal time and other calendar items:

Reminder that this Saturday, September 30, rehearsal begins at 8:30 am and ends at 10 am. Doors will be open from 7:30 to 10:30 am.

The following week it will be back to its normal time, 9:30 to 11:00 am.

The google calendar on the website is the official answer to any questions. If you read above that calendar, there are instructions for you to subscribe to that calendar!

It is looking like we will start our concert at Ogden High School November 18, 2017, at 3:30 pm. This seems to give the swimmers enough time to arrive before the concert, and helps us end early enough to get those involved in school plays to their call times.

Acceptance, Release and Payment -- and Retreat Permission -- forms

If you haven't turned in your Acceptance, Release and Payment form, or your Retreat Permission form, please bring them this Saturday!

If you need another copy, they will be available on Saturday.  Just let me know.

Parent Meeting

Thank you for your attendance at our parent meeting! We hold it to fulfill the requirements of our bylaws, but also to have a chance to meet all of you!

We were welcomed by Doris D'Asto, who is the chairman of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society board.

We followed this PowerPoint for our presentation. We talked about the organization and how long it's been around. We talked about the board and how we would love to have more members. Please note that the vast majority of the board members may have at one point, but now do not have youth in the orchestras, and express my gratitude for them in the work that they do. Without them, there would be no youth symphony or chamber orchestra. With your input, however, we can learn and grow together.

We were also reminded about the arrangement we have with Promontory School. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to this facility, and we want to keep it that way. If you move anything in the building it must be replaced! Please be aware of your surroundings, and if you do bring young children with you to wait during rehearsal, make sure you know where they are and what they are doing. We are not allowed into any classrooms at all, whether they are locked or not, and we are only in the pods if we are assigned for sectionals.

Emergency Contact

This year our emergency contact system will be through Remind, a service that many teachers use to reach out to their students. You do not need the app to participate and you can have it send you a text, an email, or both.

In order to sign up for the 2017-2018 Chamber Orchestra "class" on Remind, please choose from the following:

Send a text to sign up for text messages.

Enter this number: 81010 and text this message: @jmurro

Or you can send an email to sign up for emails.

Send an email to jmurro@mail.remind.com

You can leave the subject blank.

Or you can visit this link to join.

I really encourage you to do this if you haven't already. In the next couple weeks I will audit the list of who has signed up and add anyone who hasn't done it yet. It's critical we have everyone getting some kind of message through this. Please contact me if this is a problem.

Sometimes the weather misbehaves, or there is an emergency change of venue. Setting up this type of reminder service is crucial preparation for such situations.

Attendance Form

Please be at rehearsal! This is how we move forward and create a cohesive experience. If you are going to be late, leave early, or be absent, please fill out the Attendance Form

I get an immediate notification when someone fills it out, even on my phone after arriving at rehearsal. There is a tab link to the Attendance Form on the website.

Retreat Volunteer Spreadsheet

Our Retreat is fast approaching! Saturday, October 14, 10:00-4:00. We are in need of volunteers for our retreat. The link for the volunteer spreadsheet is:

Please be sure to look through it and see where you might be able to help, and sign up! If you have technical difficulties and find yourself unable to fill in your name, just send me an email. I'll happily add it for you. We appreciate everyone who's willing to help.

Volunteer Follow-up Form

The volunteer follow-up form goes hand-in-hand with the volunteer collaboration spreadsheet. After you've signed up and actually completed your volunteer time (or if you didn't sign up, but did some volunteer work for us anyway), please report it on the volunteer follow-up form! You'll find it on the website in the links section for use throughout the year.

Thank you ahead of time for your help! If you help strike the stage after a concert, help set up for rehearsals, or bring a treat to a party, you are contributing to this cause, so please let us know what your contribution is!  It looks really good on the grants to show this kind of support. There is also a space for the value of any in-kind donation.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!  WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A WONDERFUL YEAR!

NUYS Parent Meeting and First Rehearsal Follow-Up

Welcome!

It has already been a joy to work with you all as we have put this year's orchestra together. Thank you for your support of this program! We would be nothing without our musicians and their families. We have been hearing from people this week about filling in French Horn, Trombone, and Bassoon positions! Thank you for your recruiting efforts!

There is also a note at the bottom of this email for new members who have not yet auditioned. :)

Chamber Orchestra Recruiting

Shameless plug for Chamber Orchestra:  Many of you have moved up from Chamber Orchestra! We encourage you to recruit your younger friends and siblings to join this outstanding group!

Nathan West has some amazing music planned, and a superb vision for where the Chamber orchestra is going as more effective preparation for youth symphony. There is magic in any orchestra when it reaches "critical mass" and the youth need to feel the camaraderie of a larger group of committed musicians.

They are currently at about 15 and the orchestra needs to at least double, so please encourage your friends!

Attendance Form

We implore you to be at rehearsal! This is how we move forward and create a cohesive experience. If you play a solo in a piece (woodwinds, brass!), make sure it's covered while you are gone. If you are going to be late, leave early, or be absent, please fill out the Attendance Form

I get an immediate notification when someone fills it out, even on my phone after arriving at rehearsal. There is a tab link to the Attendance Form on the website, as well as a link in the signature of each email I send out.

Volunteer Collaboration Spreadsheet

This spreadsheet is the online version of the volunteer poster we had at the parent meeting. It will be available this year in the signature of every email.

Please be sure to look through it and see where you might be able to lend a hand, and sign up! If you have technical frustration and find yourself unable to fill in your name, just pop me an email. I'll happily add it for you. As we experience the growth of the orchestra, some tasks are no longer easy or quick and we appreciate everyone who's willing to lend a hand.

[Note: The section of the poster about the Chamber retreat has been removed from this sheet, expanded, and sent out separately to Chamber families.]

You'll find it on the website in the links section for use throughout the year, as well as in the signature of all emails.

New Members

New members, including those who came to rehearsal last Saturday and those who are planning to come this Saturday, we need you to fill out the membership form (if you filled out a paper form last Saturday, that is also sufficient), read the NUYS Auditions page, and follow all the instructions to prepare your audition, then fill out a video upload form and provide the link to an uploaded video audition before our next rehearsal. We are so pleased to have you!

NUYS Important Info

Greetings!

Here is an audition update:

In-Person Auditions
We had a super morning, and stayed on schedule! Thanks to everyone who came, and everyone we met today!

Timing for Publishing "the list"
As you know, auditions are ongoing right now because of the video uploads. Mr Dunn will start watching videos tomorrow morning in order to have a list out sooner than later. So if you haven't gotten it in yet, you still have tonight. Please contact me if you have other extenuating circumstances so we know if you still have a forthcoming video. We hope to publish the list early next week.

Video Settings
Tips on the videos: If you use youtube, make sure the video is marked as "unlisted," not "private". Unlisted keeps anyone from being able to search for it, but gives people with the link the access to it so you can successfully audition. If you are using google, the setting is "anyone with the link can view". Etc for other services. If you're not sure if your setting is right, view your link in an incognito window and you will know if someone who's not signed in to your account can see the video.

Audition Packets
If you didn't pick up a packet today, or you auditioned with a concerto in August, or you uploaded a video before I got this published, please go download the packet at the following post:

Thanks! That includes membership info that you must read, the calendar (mostly complete) for the year, and forms to bring back next week for the parent (and musician) meeting.

Thanks for your patience as we sort through the residual auditions, and do contact me if you have any issues or if I can help in any way.

Looking forward to making music with you!
Sincerely,

Julie Gardner, NUYS Manager
Conrad Dunn, NUYS Conductor

PS If you are receiving this email but you will not be participating this year, kindly reply and let me know so I can unsubscribe you from the list! Thanks! :)

Postcard Error

It has come to my attention that some of the postcards (thankfully not all of them!) that I sent last week had errors in the dates. Here is the correct postcard for NUYS.

It lists Sept 23, 2017, as both the first rehearsal and the parent meeting.

NUYS Auditions: Important Changes

Greetings!
This is going to everyone from last year that hasn't graduated, and everyone new who has signed up so far. It will also be posted on the blog.

Audition Excerpts
This year, instead of sight reading, we will have your sight reading available ahead of time! Visit the NUYS Auditions tab and download your excerpt, then you have a chance to practice it before auditions, or learn it for the video you are about to make.

Schedule Changes
This year, the time available for auditions is greatly reduced (Just 7 am to noon on 16 Sept) so we are encouraging you to audition with an uploaded video.  We do hope new musicians who haven't played with us before will still be able to audition in person.

(If you already signed up for a time after 12 pm, I will be contacting you to change your appointment or encourage you to upload a video. Feel free to go on the spreadsheet and change it before I catch up with you!)

Already signed up and want to make a video instead? Please visit the audition appointment spreadsheet and move your name to the "Uploading a Video" column if you already signed up but choose to audition with an uploaded video. This will make room for more new students to audition in person. If we simply run out of room, please audition by uploading a video even if you have not played with us before.

Video Option
You will record your audition and upload it somewhere (dropbox, google drive, youtube, etc) and create a link. If you choose youtube, you can set your video as only visible to those with a link, so it doesn't have to be public. This must be a video that is made specifically for this audition. Click here for a script. No videos of last year's recital!

You will submit the video link to us via this specific google form. It must be less than 5 minutes, and it must be submitted before Sept 16. If you are new to the youth symphony, we encourage you to audition in person if at all possible.

(In case you were wondering, Chamber Orchestra auditions remain "in person" by request of the conductor, unless the musician has extenuating circumstances, in which case you'll need to contact Jenny Murrow, their manager.)

Changes to Membership Fees
Please notice that the membership fees have changed this year. We are cancelling the gala fundraiser dinner in exchange for somewhat higher membership fees.

Your yearly membership fees still do not cover all our costs: Generous grants from George S and Dolores Dore Eccles and the Utah Arts and Museums make this program affordable. Membership fees help considerably, but without this other funding, our program would not exist. Thank you all for your continued support, and thank you to all who have supported the gala fundraiser over the years. What generous people you all are! It's a privilege to know you!

Concerto Audition Results
We spent the day on August 26th listening to 15 amazing concerto auditions! I just have to say that being locked out of the "deliberations" by the judges made me crazy! It took so long!

Congratulations to every person who practiced their butts off this summer! You are all awesome!

So, our three concerto soloists this year are:
Sarah Francis, Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, 1st Movement
Kristene Murrow, Haydn Violin Concerto in G Major, 1st Movement
Natalie Nef, Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, 3rd Movement

Honorable Mention goes to:
Jacee Taylor, Haydn Piano Concerto in F Major, 1st Movement
Amelia Merkley, Accolay Violin Concerto, 1st Movement
