Get Ready To Party!

Greetings!

I'm watching weather reports and it looks like we will be safe for the journey tomorrow morning, even though it will be super super cold!

(To our amazing family from Paris ID... You might just need to stay home. But let me know what you decide!)

Party time tomorrow! Do your best to arrange to stay until 12:30, if you can.

What: NUYS and NUYCO Christmas Party
Where: Promontory School Cafeteria, after rehearsal
When: 11 am to 12:30 pm
What to Bring:
  1. A fingerfood-type treat to share (sweet or savory)
  2. An interesting, intriguing, no-money-spent, make-someone-smile, wrapped white elephant gift
Rules: Make sure your mom's okay with whatever you decide to bring. It can be an interesting ornament, a fun toy, an ugly sweater. No TP please, Mr Dunn says. :)

See you tomorrow! Be SAFE! I love making music with you!

Remember the attendance form if you need it (link below), and have a Holly Jolly Christmas if we don't see you tomorrow!

No Rehearsal December 24
No Rehearsal December 31

NEXT Rehearsal January 7

Blessings,

Julie

NUYS: Volunteers, Party, and Safety

Greetings!

Here is a quick email with some important info:

Tour Fundraising:
Our volunteer collaboration has been updated to reflect the need for parents to lead the effort for fundraising for the tour. Debra Francis has some great resources for you, but she needs others to be in charge of this (and so do I). I've split it into monthly committees. With the lower amount for tour, it may be deemed necessary to combine some committees, once the sign up is complete.

If you can't make the spreadsheet work for you, just email me and let me know where you want your name. I'll put it on!

Party
Next week, Dec 17, is our combined Christmas Party after rehearsal, until 12:30pm. I haven't done anything about this, but be sure to plan to bring a treat (sweet or savory) to share, and an interesting, intriguing, wrapped, no-money-spent white elephant gift for our game. Creative is awesome!

Those who volunteered to help with the Christmas Party, please set aside the time to come early to set up (perhaps 10 am). Each year Doris brings table cloths and dishes to set out the food, and also decorations for the table. If there is a different volunteer that could head this up, I think Doris would be thrilled to hand off the effort to someone else.

Safety
Last, but most important, please don't come tomorrow if you are in danger. I think the weather will be okay, that the storm is warming today and will be more like rain tonight and tomorrow morning, and won't go back to snow until Saturday night, but if you are in danger where you live, please be safe and stay home! I don't think we are at the point of canceling, however.

Just let me know if you're not coming so we know you're safe.

Good luck to everyone taking the ACT tomorrow! Fun, fun!

See ya tomorrow!

Julie

PS TONIGHT is our Brigham City Messiah Sing-in, Brigham City Tabernacle, 7 pm. Come! Sing! It's going to be lovely.

NUYS Is Awesome!

Greetings!
Great great great concert! Wonderful comments from many people! Thanks to everyone who helped, thanks to our sponsors, and thanks for turning in your folders. I have every folder! A wonderful miracle! I hope you've all had a wonderful holiday break.

Concert Attire:
A few notes on concert attire while I'm thinking about it: Please note that our boys wear black jackets and black bow ties. Our girls wear black nylons or trouser socks. It looked like most people got the message; however, a few didn't quite catch some of the black or bow tie details. The outfit for youth symphony is different from chamber. Please check the DI for black suit jackets! It doesn't need to be a huge expense, but it can be a big headache if you wait until the day of our next performance.

Upcoming schedule:
Regular Rehearsals: December 3, 10 and 17
Christmas Party: After rehearsal December 17
Holiday break: December 24, 31
Recital Night: January 14, 6:30 PM, Brigham City Tabernacle
Regular Rehearsals: January 7, 14, 21, 28; February 4, 11, 18
Next Concert: February 25, Ogden High School
Check out the online calendar for more dates!

Southern Utah Tour is ON!
We have the instrumentation we need for the tour, and more info will be passed on as it becomes available!

An Opportunity:
Utah Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition: Saturday, February 4, 2017; registration deadline January 21, 2017. (Tell them you need an afternoon audition time so you don't miss rehearsal!!!) The performance for winners is May 20, 2017. For information, reply to this email and I'll forward their info to you, and visit: http://www.utahphil.org/concerto.

See you this Saturday!

NUYS Retreat 2016, Camp UTABA

Northern Utah Youth Symphony, a full orchestra under the direction of Conrad Dunn, will follow. They will be performing Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music. This concert will also feature two members of the orchestra, winners of our annual Concerto Competition, as concerto soloists. Jaquell Taylor will be performing Joseph Haydn's Cello Concerto in C. Tia Luther will be performing Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1. The concert will also include a perennial holiday favorite, Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride.

Soloists:

Jaquell Taylor

Jaquell Taylor is a senior at Fremont High School in Plain City, Utah.  She is the daughter of Joel and Amber Taylor.  She has studied cello for 11 years with John Findlay, Paul Joines, and is currently studying with Pegsoon Whang.  Jaquell is a member of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony in Brigham City, Utah.  She is currently serving as Principal Cellist.  In 2014, Miss Taylor was selected to perform in a Concerto for two Cellos with the Northern Utah Youth Symphony.  Jaquell had the opportunity during the summer of 2016 to play with the Young Artists Chamber Players under the direction of Jack Ashton while touring Europe.  Jaquell also enjoys being a member of Hot Apple Pie Fiddlers, as well as a member of a double quartet, Aspen Strings.  She has received superior ratings at ASTA festivals for the past 10 years, and has received superior ratings at Regional and State Solo and Ensembles for the past 2 years.  She loves being involved in music and participates in various school orchestras and choirs, honor orchestras, All-State Orchestras, and teaches private lessons.  Jaquell has a passion for playing her cello and making music, whether it is fiddle, chamber, symphony, or performing solo.

Tia Luther

Tia Luther, a senior at Ridgeline High School, started playing the violin at age 9. At first, she learned by participating in an after school orchestra program and by watching videos on YouTube. Later, she began taking lessons and currently studies as a student of Jesse Massey. Outside of NUYS, Tia plays as the concert mistress of ARCO (Advanced Ridgeline Chamber Orchestra), the first violinist in a student quartet, and in a violin and piano chamber group. Tia has participated in All-State Orchestra and received superior ratings as a soloist and chamber player at State level festivals. This summer, Tia was accepted into the Jacobs School of Music Summer String Academy at Indiana University where she took classes taught by the Verona Quartet, Pacifica Quartet, Mimi Zweig, Grigory Kalinovsky, and others. Tia also enjoys composing and arranging music. Last year, Tia teamed up with one of her friends and composed a piece for a state competition that received third place. Tia teaches beginning violin students as well and loves sharing music in any way she can. She plans to continue violin through college as a music performance major.

Retreat chaperone shuffle

Greetings!

I have been doing some experimenting, and if I move the boys to two of the bigger cabins, I can make the sleeping arrangements work for the retreat with just one more male chaperone and one more female chaperone in addition to everyone already signed up.

See the Volunteer Collaboration by clicking here or just reply to this email.

Thanks!
