LYS Saturday Report for October 9, 2010

Greetings!
This is Julie Gardner, 435.723.8262, GJulieKay@gmail.com.
Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Today's rehearsal:
We had a good rehearsal today! Thank you for your time.

Thanks to those awesome people who always let me know about their conflicts. Email is a miracle because you can send it whenever you need to, even in the middle of the night!

Rob and I need to ask you a big favor: Please be sure to let us know if you must (under extraordinary circumstances) leave early or arrive late. It will help us schedule our rehearsal time more productively. It can be very frustrating when key parts are missing!

Thanks for your commitment to the youth symphony! Let's be sure to do our best to set aside this time as productive. Let's arrive early and stay to the end! Extraordinary circumstances ought to be just that... Extraordinary! :)

Fall Break:
There is no rehearsal next week, October 16. It is fall break. We wish you all a great family weekend!

Calendar in the Near Future:
October 23, 30, November 6, 13: Regular Rehearsals, 9-11:15 am, ACYI.

November 13: Concerto Auditions. If you have a prepared piece or you have a friend who does, please consider auditioning to be one of our soloists for Concerto Night. Please refer to the press release below.

November 20: Dress Rehearsal at BEMS, 9-11am

November 20: Concert at BEMS, 7pm (arrival time: 6:30pm)

Press Release for Concerto Auditions:
Call for Concerto Soloists: Lincoln Youth Symphony will be holding auditions for featured soloists in their annual Concerto Night concert. The auditions will be held Saturday, November 13th, 2010, at Adele C Young Intermediate School, 830 Law Drive, Brigham City, at 11:30am. Students wishing to audition must contact Julie Gardner, LincolnYouthSymphony@gmail.com, 435.723.8262, for an audition time and pre-approval of their musical selection. LYS Retreat Report for October 1-2, 2010

Greetings!

This is Julie Gardner, 435.723.8262, GJulieKay@gmail.com.
Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Music Camp Retreat:

Thank you for your support of our retreat this weekend!  I know it came up, for many of you, rather suddenly, and I'm glad it worked out so well. We certainly plan to do it again next year!

We rehearsed Friday afternoon, ate dinner, and played games & did skits all evening. I must say that the See Saw or Teeter Totter... WoW! It was sooooo cool!  Let's not wait until next year to play Whack-'em and Do You Love Your Neighbor again, K?

We are truly grateful to Moriah Wilhelm and Christina Taylor for their time and effort to conduct our Saturday morning workshops. Thanks, also, for everyone's great efforts in our Saturday morning rehearsal. We truly improved in our playing over the time we spent together!

Thanks to Scott and Tracye Blank, camp hosts. They did a great job feeding us and taking care of us!

Thanks to all the adults who stayed with us: Robert & Tiffany Bott, Kent Potter, Nada Pehrson, and Doris D'Asto (and me! Do I thank myself too?)... Thanks also to Tiffany and Nada for playing along with us.

Next week's rehearsal:
Our rehearsal next week, October 9, will be at the regular time, 9:00 to 11:15 am, at ACYI. Please arrive early since Robert has a track record for starting rehearsal exactly on time.

Fall Break:
There will be no rehearsal on October 16. Have a great weekend with your family!

LYS Saturday Report for Sept 25, 2010

Greetings!

This is Julie Gardner, 435.723.8262, GJulieKay@gmail.com.
Please contact me with any questions, or, as usual, with attendance issues.

Today's Rehearsal:

We had a great opening rehearsal - we read through Variations on a Shaker Melody, Suppe's Poet & Peasant Overture, and our major piece, the first movement of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony.  It was so nice to just read through everything slowly and hear how it all goes.

There were several people with other obligations so attendance could have been higher, but it was nice that so many were able to come after rehearsal for the parent meeting!

Thank you so much for your attendance at the parent meeting! I counted families and it was well-attended!

Retreat Information:

Retreat information and release forms were handed out today. Money was collected during the parent meeting for tuition and for the retreat ($35 - this is the amount that the camp is charging... LBSS is not profiting from this).

If you did not get a retreat form, click here to go to the LYS website and you can download and print the form. This permission form must be turned in to participate in the retreat. We encourage families to carpool. Please contact me if you need help finding someone to carpool with.

I need final number asap so Camp Utaba can prepare food for our stay. As I said at the parent meeting, this is sooner than I had originally anticipated for our retreat, but the dates worked out when they did, and I truly believe in the magic of "Music Camp"; we will come home inspired! This is going to be so fun!

If we have not yet received your payment and I don't know if you are coming, please save me a phone call and let me know, K?

Whether you are new and this is your first year, or you are returning for another year, I applaud your willingness to make music on Saturday mornings!

It's going to be a fantastic year!

Please Note: This may look like a long email but PLEASE read it. There are changes this year. It's not the same thing. Read on:

This week:
  • Print the acceptance & payment form. Fill it out and bring it to rehearsal (9-11:15am) this Saturday, Sept 25th. The membership information referenced in the acceptance & payment form is also attached to this email, as is the printable calendar for the year (remember, the most up-to-date calendar info is online on LincolnYouthSymphony.blogspot.com - click "Calendar - LYS" on the right).
    • This Week's Schedule -- Saturday, Sept 25th:
      • 8:45 am -- Arrive, Set up, Warm up
      • 9:00 am to 11:15 am -- Rehearsal
      • 11:30 am to 12:15 pm -- Mandatory Parents' Meeting (LYCO & LYS)
  • Be sure to get at least one of your parents to attend the Mandatory Parents' Meeting with you. That's this Saturday after our rehearsal from 11:30-12:15. It will be a short meeting and will earn your parents a discount on tuition! Please see the attachment "LYS acceptance and payment form" for additional tuition information.
Next week: Come for a special get-to-know-you weekend including rehearsals, skits, and special workshops with fantastic musicians (I am so excited!). You will learn & grow and come back ready for an awesome year of music making and friendship!
  • What: Lincoln Youth Symphony Kickoff and Retreat
  • Why: For a Mini-Music-Camp Experience
  • Where: Camp Utaba north of Eden, Utah. See www.camputaba.org and click on "maps" on the left sidebar.
  • When: Oct 1st, 4pm to Oct 2nd, 1pm, 2010
  • Who: All musicians (& chaperons - please contact me if interested)
  • Cost: $35 (It is extremely important that each student attend. If the money is a problem, please plan to come anyway and we'll help you work it out!)
Just a note about this retreat: A highlight of my teenage years was Olympic Music Camp near Port Orchard, Washington! I loved it; I went twice. It was a 2-week summer camp. We had orchestra rehearsal morning and afternoon, played in chamber groups, had movie night and skit night and hiked to the big rock on the nearby lake; the percussion & brass learned Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, hauled their equipment around to the other side of the lake, and performed for us! It was amazing. I still get chills just thinking about that music drifting across the lake towards us! One year, the youth symphony learned Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony to perform for our parents on the last day -- like we played the entire symphony -- all four movements! It was intense, but it was amazing! I learned about myself, I made friends, and I wish everyone had that kind of opportunity.

This LYS retreat will not be two weeks. In fact, it won't even be a full 24 hours, but it will be as close to music camp as I can make it! We will have specialists up there on Saturday morning for workshops and sectionals. Prepare to be inspired! We will rehearse twice - Friday evening and again Saturday morning. We will have a really outrageous performance & skit night (start thinking now... music-themed skits, please!). You won't want to miss this! Be prepared for a great time!

Okaaaayyyyy! Back to business: we will hand out music this Saturday at our first rehearsal. For our November 20th concert we will be learning:
  • Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, 1st movement (we will be learning the entire symphony over the course of the year)
  • Suppe's Poet & Peasant Overture
  • Copland's Variations on a Shaker Melody
  • Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride
Below is a list of this year's orchestra. When you arrive at rehearsal this Saturday, please sit in the order on the list. (Side note: please be aware that there may (not necessarily "will"... just "may") be seating changes after each concert to give leadership opportunities and to balance sections.)

Please also note our needs: Oboes, another bassoon, more horns, Trumpets, another trombone, tuba, percussionist, and MORE STRINGS!

THIS IS A BIG DEAL! IT'S ABOUT GROWING THE GROUP: For a limited time (until the seats are filled), our conductor, Robert Bott, is offering membership to anyone who you think can handle it and who wants to come and play - the audition will be for seating purposes only - your friends' willingness (and your recommendation) takes the place of the membership audition! Get those friends to come! They'll miss the fun retreat if they don't join up right away! Bring them to rehearsal just to play along and check it out! Let's grow this orchestra and help each other make it a fantastic experience!

Okay, okay, here's the list (not that you didn't already scroll down and read it, right?!)....

Lincoln Youth Symphony Auditions NEXT WEEK

Greetings!

Come Play With Us!

Upcoming Auditions:

Now for the main reason behind this email: Just a GENTLE REMINDER!

Auditions for this year's Lincoln Youth Symphony are just ONE WEEK AWAY, by appointment, on Sept 18, 2010, from 8:30 to 11am at Adele C Young Intermediate School, 830 Law Drive, Brigham City!

If you have any questions or concerns about the audition process, don't hesitate to contact me by replying to this email or giving me a call at 435.723.8262.

If you are planning on participating, please hit reply to this email and ask for an appointment time. I have spoken to several people who have said, "Oh, yeah, I need an appointment"... so I know you're out there. I have had a few dedicated folks actually make appointments, but I am visualizing a much fuller schedule! Thank you so much... just tell your friends how easy it was to make the appointment!

Small Print:
No one will be turned away without an appointment, but they may end up waiting. Longer. Than. Necessary. I am leaving some spaces for walk-ins, but it's like having reservations at a fancy restaurant! Those who make reservations do not deal with the crowd in the entryway waiting for their turn on a first-come-first-served basis, eh?

Network with friends!

I'll bet you know people who might be interested in LYS, so please pass this information on to them. If you are a teacher, please make this information available to your students. Remember, students must be enrolled in their school music programs to participate. We work together - school programs support us and we support the school programs in return.

Let's work together to make this an amazing year! To start the year out right, we will be going on an overnight retreat October 1-2. It will be an awesome mini-music-camp experience. Don't put off your audition; you might miss the retreat! It's only 2 weeks later!

I have attached [Editor's note: If you are reading this on the blog, please click here for a link to the information packet], for your perusal, all the information that was sent out to returning or prospective musicians. I know some of you have graduated, but many have younger siblings or friends that might absolutely love the experience of playing original compositions with motivated musicians.

Peach Days Concert Tomorrow!

How exciting it has been to get the new season started with Peach Days. It's going to be a fun concert tomorrow, Saturday, 11 September at 1:30pm! If you're not involved but would like to still come, it's on Main Street in Brigham City. After we play our set, we are even collaborating with Kahuna Beach Party on some Beach Boys music!

If you click here, google will show you an aerial shot of where the stage will be - it will face south in the parking lot at the top of the picture. Isn't technology amazing? Now you can zoom out to get your bearings and even get driving directions (beware, however, that Forest will be closed from 8th West all the way to Main Street all day Saturday).

Due to Robert's work schedule and prior commitments, we have modified the rehearsal schedule slightly. Peach Days Rehearsals

Greetings!

I met with Robert Bott and his wife Tiffany tonight! Doris D'Asto, LBSS chairman of the board, came over, too. It was a wonderful evening. This is going to be a GREAT year!

We are planning our retreat - as soon as we have the date officially reserved, we will let you know. Save your pennies - it will be about $35 per person including meals, and it will totally be worth it.

Robert Bott will be conducting the LBCS (Lake Bonneville Community Symphony) and LYS combined Peach Days concert, but since he works until 6:30pm in Layton, we will have to improvise a little. We will be sight-reading music... And possibly working on some spots in sectionals until about 7:15. We will read through as much of the music as possible with our conductor in the last hour and 15 minutes of the rehearsal. Our first rehearsal will be this Tuesday, August 17th, at 6:30pm.

We will be adding one or two Thursday rehearsals, and we will let you know as soon as they are scheduled.

This is a Shout-Out to please let me know by reply email if you are planning to play. This is kind of last minute, but it is going to be so fun, and a great chance to work with Robert and get to know him!

Thanks to those who have already told me your plans.

And deepest apologies to all you graduates who are not around here anymore and keep receiving my entertaining emails. As soon as I have a new list for this year, I will no longer bother you. :)

He will most likely be conducting our Peach Days Concert. We will know in the next couple days. Please plan to play in it. The concert is Sept 11th at 1:30 pm. ANYONE is invited to play in this concert - it is a non-audition fun outdoor pops concert. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After a competitive conductor search, the Lincoln Youth Symphony (Brigham City) is pleased to announce Robert Bott as their new conductor. Mr. Bott will add a new dimension to the youth symphony with his expertise and love of music. The orchestra is destined to grow under his able tutelage.

High school age musicians who play orchestral instruments including violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, piccolo, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion/timpani are invited to audition for this growing and dynamic full symphony orchestra. The open auditions will be September 18th from 8:30 to 11:00 am. Please contact LincolnYouthSymphony@gmail.com for an appointment. Walk-in auditions will be accepted as time allows. Audition requirements are posted on LincolnYouthSymphony.blogspot.com. Students not yet ready for Lincoln Youth Symphony may want to audition for the Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra conducted by Charles Thompson.

Any student or adult musicians interested in meeting and working with Mr. Bott before coming to auditions are invited to play in the no-audition Peach Days orchestra which will perform on September 11th on the Main Street Stage in Brigham City. Rehearsals begin soon. Please visit LincolnYouthSymphony.blogspot.com for additional information.

Robert Bott, in addition to being the newly appointed Music Director/Conductor for the Lincoln Youth Symphony, currently serves as Co-Music Director of the Celebration Chamber Orchestra. Robert has guest conducted with the Salt Lake Symphony, the Utah Composer's Forum, the Summer Choral Institute, and has participated in conducting workshops around the country. He has also been privileged to work with living composers and to conduct premieres of several contemporary works, including his own compositions. His conducting teachers include Robert Baldwin, David Cho, Brady Allred, Kenneth Kiesler, Andrew George, and David Schiff.

A native of Salt Lake City, Robert holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in Music Composition, and a Master's degree in Instrumental Conducting. His interests in music are extremely varied; besides conducting and composition, Robert has studied the saxophone, clarinet, and voice. As a performer he has had the privilege of playing in numerous instrumental ensembles, singing in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, and touring England and France with the University of Utah Singers, winners of the European Grand Prix International Choir Competition in 2006. Robert and his wife live in Layton, Utah, and in their spare time enjoy literature, sports, video games, and nature.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony is a project of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing student and adult musicians with a superior musical experience and supporting existing school programs by giving their students musical leadership skills. The Lincoln Youth Symphony participates in the annual Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall, and under the direction of Robert Bott will be participating in their first-ever weekend retreat this fall.

The Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is supported in part by the George S and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, matching fund donations from ATK and Autoliv, incredible youth musicians and their fabulous parents & grandparents.

Lincoln Youth Symphony Conductor Audition Schedule and Instructions

Greetings!

I am sending this to "everyone" again simply because I know there are people out there who have not responded because they didn't know the schedule.

To those of you who have responded, thank you for your willingness to participate in the process of selecting our new conductor for LYS. This is really going to be a fun experience! You will have an opportunity to evaluate each applicant, and then cast a "vote" for your pick! Your opinion matters very much to us! I think it's going to be a difficult decision. :)

So far I have 1 flute, 1 oboe, no bassoons, 1 clarinet, 1 horn, no trumpets, no trombones, no percussion, 5 violins, 1 viola, 2 (maybe 3) cellos, no basses. Invite your friends, whether they are members of LYS or not! Remember, this is just a one-day commitment! I will either deliver (if you live close by) or email you the music. If you've already responded, you'll get it today, so you have time to prepare.

I have worked out the schedule.

Let me apologize, first off, that it will be a long morning, and assure you that there will be food provided by the board of directors. Sustenance is mighty important, I believe!

Here is the schedule:

8:00 am Orchestra arrives; 8:15 am Preliminary Rehearsal Downbeat (I will be running this rehearsal)

9:00-9:15 am Interview (Orchestra break); 9:15-9:45 am Rehearsal (Bott)

9:45-10:00 am Interview (Orchestra break); 10:00-10:30 am Rehearsal (Beeton)

10:30-10:45 am Interview (Orchestra break); 10:45-11:15 am Rehearsal (Bae)

11:15-11:30 am Interview (Orchestra break); 11:30-12:00 pm Rehearsal (Bowman)

Orchestra members may use break time to practice, eat, and/or meet the previous applicant while the next applicant is interviewed by the board.

Since you will be an active participant in the audition process, please read the following letter (below, in blue) I sent to the applicants. In addition to explaining the goals of the rehearsals, it includes information on the pieces we will be playing, and links to youtube videos of other orchestras playing those pieces. I've pasted it below!

Thanks again, in advance, for your willingness and participation. If you've already said you would be participating, you will receive your music today. I will compile some information about each applicant and email it to participants during the week.

:) Julie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Applicant,
On behalf of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society board of directors, thank you for your interest in being the next Conductor / Music Director of the Lincoln Youth Symphony and for participating in our conductor search! We appreciate your time and your talents. The Lincoln Youth Symphony is ready to be taken to the next level, and I know finding an excellent conductor must be part of that process. ...
Since it is the middle of summer, the audition orchestra is not the current Lincoln Youth Symphony – it is current members, past members, friends & family of LYS and of the Lake Bonneville Community Symphony – some are more advanced than LYS youth, and some are less advanced. The orchestra will also be involved in the evaluation of each applicant.
Our goal is to observe you as you run a rehearsal. Please think of it as the third rehearsal on the music, not the first. We want to get to know you in as close to a real musical setting as possible. Each applicant will be working on the same pieces, and we have kept the music limited so you can focus. We do not want you to just "run through" the pieces; we would like you to stop the orchestra and work on whatever strikes you, or even begin your rehearsal with "spots" that you have identified ahead of time. Please budget your time so you can work on both pieces.
I have already mailed the scores to you. You should receive them in the mail today. The two pieces are:
"St Lawrence Overture" by Robert Washburn, © 1943. This piece was relatively easy for our orchestra to sight-read two years ago, so I knew it would be possible to put together for the audition orchestra, but it also has interesting parts for all members of the orchestra, and it is not terribly long (about 5½ minutes). There were also five full scores in the file which made distributing scores to you easier for me. Here is a video of the Jordan Youth Symphony performing this piece.
"Fugue in G Minor (The Little)" by JS Bach, orchestrated by Lucien Cailliet, © 1940. This is another piece we have performed before. It is short, but a little tricky because of its… fugal… nature. Lots of entrances! J I did photocopy the score for you on this, but it was much shorter than the other piece. Here is a video of the Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta orchestra performing this piece.
Again, please do not approach this as a concert. We expect you to stop the orchestra and work on things. We want to observe you in your work. We want to see what you can accomplish with the orchestra, always sensitive to the abilities of the musicians, yet lifting them to their highest potential.
We do wish the rehearsal time could be longer, but it was not feasible. Even with the ½ hour rehearsal time, we have the orchestra scheduled from 8 am to Noon. This will be a long morning for them, so it is important to keep to the schedule!
Thank you again for your time and talents! I am looking forward to meeting you. I know it will be an enjoyable and interesting morning.
