Program Notes
This has been a singular year, and we present you today with a concert full of good, solid, beautiful music. We are so grateful to be performing for a live audience, for the generosity of our sponsors, and for all of our families who give of their time and love in this musical endeavor.
The Chamber Orchestra will open the program with a grand, familiar piece: Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance No. 8 from his Slavonic Dances opus 46. He composed sixteen Slavonic Dances which were divided into two sets of eight; the Youth Symphony will be performing from the other set, opus 72. Inspired by Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, Antonin Dvořák composed these for 4 hand piano, and later orchestrated them at the request of his publisher.
Next, they will perform Stephen Foster’s Beautiful Dreamer, a familiar tune from America’s beloved 19th Century songwriter! Give him a google and see how many songs you are familiar with!
The Chamber Orchestra’s final piece will be
Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio
Italien, a bold string arrangement that has proven
quite challenging! It might be an arrangement, but it’s still Tchaikovsky, and
he sure loved accidentals!
The
Youth Symphony will then take the stage also beginning with Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, this
time from opus 72, numbers
5, 6 and 7. Notice that there are certain instruments
not included in the score for number 6, which makes more of a contrast between
the dances. These dances do not quote actual folk music, but evoke their style
and spirit. Notice all the times the music slows down and then speeds up again.
Next on
the program is the Rhapsodie from Suite
Hebraique by Ernest Bloch, performed by Talmage Kay. Bloch’s
lifelong study of Hebrew music contributed to this composition, which he
composed in 1951 for a special celebration of Hebrew music. Listen for the
sound of the Shofar (the ram’s horn) in this lovely piece!
We will continue our concert with Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture. When I
looked this up, I laughed! He composed it as a tribute to the University of
Breslau which was awarding him an honorary doctorate. He really just wanted to
send a thank you note, but ended up composing this piece, full of student
drinking songs arranged in a loose and episodic way. It’s a high-minded joke,
and Brahms loved them!
Our final piece is a crowd pleaser just for you. Aboriginal Rituals is an original piece by Elliot Del Borgo. Driving rhythms are its hallmark.
As a society, our mental, emotional, and spiritual health are each in need of a lift, and this music encourages an escape from the strange year, at least for an evening. We deeply believe in what we’re doing, enough to be contact tracing the audience so we could put on another live performance!

Kay
Talmage Kay was enthralled with the
violin at age two, and vowed to learn a string instrument. He reluctantly
excelled on the piano beginning at age five, and was finally able to touch a
violin on his 8th birthday. From 3rd to 5th grade, he played in two beginning
orchestras, and took private lessons. In 6th grade, while listening to the
differing musical parts, he loved the rich harmonies of the viola. Playing the
viola has taught him of musical complexity and the importance of teamwork
throughout the symphonic sections.
He is a senior at Green Canyon High
School, and will be going to BYU-Idaho to study Computer Science and play in
their ensembles. Among his favorite
composers are Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Handel, Suk, Bloch, Vivaldi, Bach, and of
course, himself. He enjoys creating music and computer programs, sometimes
doing both at the same time. He has played under the direction of Conrad Dunn
for 9 years, and has taken part of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony for 5
years. He has performed in two of his school musicals: Aida and The Hunchback
of Notre Dame, and played in the Cache Symphony Orchestra under Mark Emile.
He would like to thank Jen Sova, his first violin teacher who happened to be a viola player; Carolyn Larson, who showed him how nice the piano harmony with the violin could be; Jayme McKenna, his current private teacher for the last 5 years who has done a great job pushing him to take opportunities given to him; Patrick Clark, his school orchestra director who puts Talmage in his place as a violist; Julie, who pretty much runs the whole symphony show and keeps his section’s fingerings in check; his viola, who has been with him through many scary auditions and performances; Adam Day, his luthier of nine years; Ryan Scott, his accompanist for 4 years (since Ryan was 13) who has fixed innumerable problems in performances without anyone knowing; Paula Scott, Ryan’s “julie” (mom) and page turner; Talmage’s family, who have supported him through the ups and downs of playing an instrument putting up with the early morning and late night practices; and his parrot, Cooper, who loves to sing along with the music in the house.
Concerto Soloists for this season were
selected from concerto auditions in August 2020.
Talmage received Honorable
Mention at this year’s auditions.
