Program Notes

   We are so grateful for perseverance, for the generosity of our sponsors, and for all of our families who give of their time and love in this musical endeavor. May you each enjoy our musical gift to you today! 

   The Chamber Orchestra will open the program with The Three B’s: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto, Brahms’ Themes from his First Symphony, and Beethoven’s King Stephan Overture, arranged specifically for the Chamber Orchestra by our very own Nathan West! It has been such an eye-opening experience for our chamber musicians to participate in the process of arranging of this piece! 

   Be sure to listen to the different styles of each composer! 

   Next, we will hear from the Interlude String Quartet, comprised of four wonderful, talented, and dedicated musicians who have stayed extra long for most of the year for their own enjoyment, even giving their pieces lovable nicknames! We are happy to give them a chance to shine, symbolic of all those who would have performed at our annual recital night! They will perform quartets by Haydn & Tchaikovsky.

   The Youth Symphony will then take the stage and warm up for their portion of the program, which begins with a feature of our Brass and Percussion sections with Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland. I (Julie) first heard this piece at music camp in Western Washington. They hauled the timpani, bass drum, gong and all the brass section to the other side of a lake, performing across the water for all of the other campers. I will never ever forget the effect it had on me! We couldn’t see them for the trees, but we could definitely hear them! It was magical!

   Next on the program is the Vorspiel (Overture) to the first act of Richard Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nűrnberg. The opera is a 4½ hour comic piece about a singing contest, and this overture was written and performed years before the opera came into being. Listen for the many different melodies weaving in and out like a tapestry!

   The concert will continue with the Wieniawski Violin Concerto, Natalie Nef, soloist. Natalie has been with us since she was in sixth grade, and she will be missed when she graduates! She has done a wonderful job as Concert Master this year!

   Our final piece features so many solos and spotlights! Capriccio Espagnole by Rimsky-Korsakov could be used as an introduction to the different sounds of the orchestra! Listen for French Horns & Brass, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, percussion, the solo violin, as well as the harp and others!

Natalie Nef

   Natalie is 18 years old and lives in Pleasant View.  She has been studying violin since she was 3 years old. She has been concert master for the school orchestra for the last six years during which time she also received superior marks at Solo and Ensemble.  Natalie received superior ratings at State Solo Ensemble for 3 years for violin. COVID prevented it from being 4 years. She has been in the district high school honor orchestra for 11 years, and her feet eventually touched the floor while playing.

   Natalie has also been a part of the All-State Orchestra and BYU String and Summer Fest. She received superior marks at ASTA competitions at Utah State and Weber State University. Natalie has also competed at Federation at the University of Utah for five years, where she has received superior ratings.  She was the Ogden Youth Symphony Concerto winner in 2017, where she soloed with them and the Weber State University Symphony. She also performed with pianists Gleb Ivano and Bella Hristova as the winner of the Ogden Symphony Ballet Youth Benefit Concert Competition 2017 and 2019. Natalie won the Jean Poll Music Scholarship in 2017. She has played in the winner’s concert for the UTMA competition in both piano and violin. She also has performed with the Davis County Orchestra and the New American Philharmonic. 

   Natalie has done multiple violin recordings for various groups, as well as Alex Boyé, Jim Brinkman, and David Osmond. She has also participated in an Emmy Winning Television special, Christmas Under the Stars. She won the American Protégé International Concerto competition three times and also soloed at Carnegie Hall June 2018 and May 2019, and will be playing in December 2021. She also toured Italy playing her violin. 

   Natalie has been a member of the Northern Utah Youth Symphony for seven years, where she soloed in 2018 playing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.  Natalie has played for Onstage Ogden for multiple events. She has participated in many Master Classes, including with Xavier Foley, Bella Hristova, Boris Goldberg twice, and Gleb Ivano. She is also a member of the Utah Symphony Youth Guild. Natalie has studied violin under Alyza Bowcutt, Amber Taylor, Peggy Wheelwright, and is currently studying under David Porter.

   Natalie has been playing the piano since she was 5 years old. She has competed in many piano competitions, including Weber State Piano Festival, Northern Utah Piano Concerto Federation, and Northern Utah Piano Federation, where she has received superior marks. On piano, she has earned superior ratings for the last 4 years at Region Solo Ensemble, and superior at State Solo ensemble for 3 years. Natalie won the 2019 Utah Music Teachers Association Competition. She studies piano under Cammie Titus.

   Natalie has studied the pipe organ since she was 12, as soon as her legs could touch the pedals. She is one of the church’s accompanists. She studies under Richard Rhees.

   As a singer, Natalie has been a member of the International Children’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. Katherine Sorenson, for 10 years. She has performed for hundreds of ambassadors from around the world in their native tongues. She has done multiple recordings for movies, commercials, composers, and recording artists. She has been in the University of Utah’s Hansel and Gretel production. Her favorite performances have been when she gets to sing and play her violin for the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also was in the bell choir.

   Currently a senior at Weber High School, she is a 4.0 student and a member of the honor society. Natalie is the regional Sterling Scholar in Instrumental Music. She is a member of the Weber High varsity swim team, where she has lettered for four years, and a member of Weber High School varsity soccer team where she was the varsity captain and received Defensive Player of the Year award. She is a member of the Rampage RL premier competition soccer team. 

   In her spare time, when she is not practicing or playing soccer, she likes to travel with her family and hang out with friends. She hopes to someday solo with the Utah Symphony, be a member of the Berlin Philharmonic, and study violin abroad. 

   Natalie will be attending Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University, beginning Fall 2021, where she received the Presidential Scholarship.

Concerto Soloists for this season were selected from concerto auditions in August 2020. 

Natalie was selected to perform in the August 2020 auditions for last year’s season, but her concert was cancelled. We are pleased that her performance has worked out this year!

Our next concerto auditions will be held August 14th, 2021.
