LYS Concert Saturday February 28th, 2009

Greetings! 

 

Here are some details about this Saturday's concert:

 

The Concert is at Box Elder High School Auditorium on February 28th, 2009. The concert begins at 7:00 pm. Call time for musicians is 6:15 so we can start our pieces on stage beforehand.

 

Admission structure has changed. Remember, admission covers the cost of the hall and raises money for music: $3 for adults, $1.50 for children 11 & under, and $1.50 for seniors. $12 for a family ticket (all under one roof).
 
Austin Weyand will open our concert with about 20 minutes solo guitar work. We are really looking forward to this wonderful opportunity to hear Austin play, then LYS will take the stage.

Wow! This week has gone so quickly. I just realized it's Thursday and I haven't written to thank you for the wonderful success of our fundraising dinner last Saturday!  I hope you all had a great evening... I certainly did. Our treasurer said that we raised more than $1300 that evening - all because of your dedication and participation. Thanks to Kandra for working so hard to sell tickets... She'll have to let me know what she would like her $25 gift card for!

 

Okay... Back to reality!

 

Here is an update on the rehearsal schedule: 

 

Please don't forget to bring your permission slip this Saturday for Abravanel Hall.

 

Remember, this Saturday, February 28th, we will start with Strings only. Austin Weyand will be there to rehearse the Vivaldi Guitar Concerto with us. Arrival time for strings: 7:45 a.m. Please take this seriously. We had almost everyone there on time last week, and it worked out so wonderfully! Once again, we do not want to waste his time! Rehearsal begins: 8:00 a.m. This will not take long if we get started on time! 

 

Same drill as last week for all others: 8:15 a.m. Rehearsal resumes: 8:30 a.m. sharp! Note for Kandra and Oboes/Horns: We will rehearse the Mozart after the guitar concerto if there is time; if not, we will save it until the end. Thanks for working with us on this!  We are trying not to waste anyone's time!

Last Saturday

 

Timing worked out well last Saturday, the rehearsal started on time, although we missed a few people as they left for honor band tryouts. I hope lots of people made it!  We love it when there are so many representatives of LYS in the USU honor band! :)

 

Gala

 

Once again, thanks to everyone for participating in the dinner last week!  What an enjoyable way to raise some money. Our volunteers did a fabulous job of seating people, filling water, and making everything run smoothly. It must have gone okay, because I didn't have to worry!  Thanks to everyone who collected door prizes, and to the businesses and individuals that donated. I am currently compiling a list for the program on Saturday! :)

 

Abravanel Hall: Some of this is the same, but it's all important, so I'm including it again.

 

If you have not returned your permission slip yet, be sure to bring it this Saturday.

 

Hopefully everyone has a permission slip/information sheet on our trip to Abravanel Hall, March 2, 2009. I have uploaded a PDF copy here in case you need another. If you are unable to leave school for the entire time we will be gone, please look into having your parents bring you. We are small in numbers this year, and we need every warm body on stage!

 

Our performance time is 11:00 am; if you are not coming on the bus, I need you there by 10:00 am. We will warm up in the Green Room at 10:30 and perform from 11:00 to 11:30, then we will go into the lobby with our instruments for a photograph (bring $10 or a check to Patrick Webster to order your 8 x10 photo!). We will board the bus again after our pictures - 12:30 p.m. at the latest. In Abravanel Hall, because of fire code, we have specific assigned rows for small cases (row 2), large cases (row 30), and for sitting (row 3). I will give you more details closer to the time! I can't wait!  It's going to be fun. :)

We have just two more rehearsals before our concert Feb 28 and the trip to Abravanel Hall Monday, March 2. Thanks to everyone for coming today, especially since it's President's Day weekend. You are awesome!

 

Here is an update on the rehearsal schedule for the next two weeks:

Today

 

Timing never seems to work as we expect it to, but we still had a great rehearsal this morning! Timing for the cello sectional was... late... because there weren't very many cellists there at 8:00 a.m., (I hope this doesn't happen next week since we have an appointment with our soloist at 8:00 a.m.... Did I already say that? Silly me!) but Mr. Findlay worked with our cellists again after the rehearsal. They sound better every week!  Keep practicing, cellists! It's a challenging part. But challenges help us grow, right?

 

Thanks to Cami for working with the brass players who got the message about coming early. :)

Gala Tickets

 

Thanks to all who turned in ticket money today. We're getting quite a collection! It's going to be so fun! There will be a quilt to auction or raffle (we haven't decided yet). 

 

Our deadline from the caterer for final numbers has been extended to Wednesday of next week. I need your final commitments and money by Tuesday. If you have already collected the money by then and just not turned it in, you may turn it in on Saturday. Does that make sense?

 

If you need more tickets, like if you call everyone you know and have great success like Kandra did, or want to drop off money, I live at 2800 S 1200 W, Perry. Remember: If you took tickets, you are responsible for them as if they are cash. We need all unsold tickets returned before the dinner next Saturday. Each ticket is $15.

 

Today I forgot to send around the sign-up for volunteers to set up, host and serve. Volunteers will receive a free meal. I already know of some people who have expressed interest in doing this, but if you want to volunteer in exchange for a meal, please contact me by responding to this email so I can officially put you on the list!  

 

Thank you so much for your support in this endeavor! Remember, there is a $25 gift card to the location of your choice for the LYS musician who sells the most tickets. Kandra P. is still our frontrunner.

I really honestly change this email every week, so if you are a skim reader, you may miss something! :)

 

Remember that there will be rehearsal Every Saturday from now until the concert Feb 28 and the trip to Abravanel Hall Monday, March 2. This includes President's Day weekend. We will also be modifying the time schedule for the next three rehearsals. This Saturday, there will be a cello sectional starting at 8:00 a.m. The following two Saturdays, rehearsal will begin at 8:00 am for everyone. This week

 

This coming Saturday February 14th, we will have a cello sectional at 8:00 am. Everyone else needs to come in and set up quietly. Let's warm up in the hallway so the cellos have quiet for their sectional. :) We will start regular rehearsal at 8:30 am. Please Note: On February 21 & 28, rehearsals will start at 8:00 am. Plan to be there 10 minutes early to get set up and ready to play by 8.

 

Last Week

 

This past Saturday, February 7th, we had regular rehearsal with Gayle Mansfield. (Thank you Gayle!) Her favorite saying: Practice Hard; Don't Practice Hardly.  We hope Mr. Findlay had a fabulous time at the convention in St. George.

 

We also passed out permission slips for the Abravanel Hall trip (see below). Everyone needs to return the bottom portion of that slip!.

 

Gala Tickets

 

Thanks to all who turned in ticket money last Saturday. Please have final numbers to me by this Saturday, February 14th (happy Valentine's Day). We need the money in advance, unless you have made special arrangements with me. Remember, each ticket you took - and signed for - is like cash. You need to return money for each ticket. All unsold tickets need to be returned before the dinner. We need to give the caterer one week's notice on how many people are coming, so the ticket sale deadline is February 14th (this weekend). Please collect money in advance. Each ticket is $15.

 

This Saturday, there will be a sign-up for volunteers to host and serve. Volunteers will receive a free meal. Please be sure people write checks to LBSS or Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society.

This week

 

This coming Saturday John Findlay will be in St George for a music teachers' convention, so Gayle Mansfield will be conducting the rehearsal again for us. We appreciate her help and look forward to showing her all our progress since the last time she came. I'm sure you've been practicing like crazy! I just love the Tchaikovsky and can't wait to perform it at Abravanel Hall.

 

Last Week

 

This past Saturday, January 24th, we had regular rehearsal with treats. They looked really good... even a big bag of homemade cookies! We made some good progress on our music, and we hope that you keep practicing. The countdown is ON... We only have 4 more rehearsals, including the day of the concert!

Abravanel Hall

Expect to board the bus sometime after 7:00 am and to return around 1:15. There will be a pickup point at ACYI and another pickup point at the Park & Ride at 2700 N. We will listen to several orchestras, starting at 8:30 am with Jordan Youth Symphony (conducted by Mr. Findlay's dad), and then go upstairs to the green room to warm up at 10:30. If you are unable to leave school for that long, please look into having your parents bring you. Our performance time is 11:00 am; I need you there by 10:00 am. We will perform from 11:00 to 11:30, then we will go into the lobby with our instruments for a photograph (bring $10 to order your photo!). We will board the bus again after our pictures - at about noon. I will have more specific times after the bus person returns my call!

LYS: Follow-up Financial Report, and Abravanel Hall Performance Time

This quick email is a sigh-of-relief-follow-up on LBSS Finances.

Here is what our treasurer has to say:

Good news! We do have enough money for payroll.  Due to a minor accounting error, we have a lot more than I thought we did. Our checkbook is back as it should be. I will go to the bank today and get an updated printout of our statement and double check the actual balance, but we should be back in business.

 

Still, we do not have enough money to stay "in business" through the end of the year, so I think the gala is still a good idea. Our inflow of cash is sketchy at best. Keeping it simple can still help ease future expenses.

 

I am sorry for the uproar. I will keep you posted as I verify my mistake and get checks written. Thanks everyone.

So, our fundraiser is officially "back on!"  We are asking each student to sell 4 tickets, and there will only be one dinner (the caterer was happier with this arrangement, and we definitely want the food to be as good as it was last year).

 

 

Now to the really important stuff: Abravanel Hall

 

I received our schedule for Abravanel Hall in the mail today. We are in the morning performance schedule. Our warm up time is 10:30 am and our performance is at 11:00 am, Monday, March 2, 2009. This is going to be so fun!  I will let you know when we have our bus schedule worked out, and start collecting permission slips soon. We will go early enough to listen to other orchestras perform before us, and there will be a photo taken afterwards. More information to follow!

 

I am planning to take a publicity picture for our next concert at rehearsal tomorrow, so comb your hair if you care!

LYS Saturday Report -- January 24th, 2009

Breaking News (please read this before you read the regular stuff below!)

 

I waited to send this email because of an important development in the finances of Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, our umbrella organization... Because we did not receive the regular grant from the now-restructured Marie Eccles Caine Foundation, we have been planning to stage a really big fundraiser this spring that will bring in enough to cover the $6,000 loss, but we have realized that our payroll cannot be met for our second quarter (ending this week) without more money in the bank NOW.

 

Good news: The bills are paid and the treasurer has kept sufficient money for the insurance bill coming next month. ACYI has been paid off for the year. But our managing and artistic personnel who put in so many hours will not be paid. We also need money in the bank to pay for the bus to Abravanel Hall when the bill comes in March, etc., etc... It's just amazing to me how difficult, but rewarding, it is to keep the organization going. What a blessing it is in my life to play with and mentor such amazing musicians! I have confidence that we can overcome this shortage as we continue to explore and look for different grants.

 

So, here's the lo-down: Last year we put together a Gala Dinner and Silent Auction. Since we decided not to do it this year, opting for a bigger fundraiser later in the spring, we cancelled our venue and caterer (you may have noticed past emails that said "take Feb 21 off your calendar." Well, please put it back on!). Here are some details... (I hope this is not TMI - Too Much Information)... So far, we have put ourselves back onto the calendar for the Brigham City Community Center on Feb 21 (no one else had scheduled it) and since we are non-profit, we have a fee waiver! In other words, the venue will cost us nothing! Last year we had a caterer that did a wonderful Dutch oven dinner for $7.50 per plate. We charged $15 per plate. With a capacity of around 200 for the dinner (I think we sold some tickets to people who did not come), we netted $3000 that night; $1300 of that was from the silent auction and raffle and the rest was from the dinner.

 

We are considering doing two dinner rotations this time, with some small door prizes and a large raffle item. This is VERY SHORT NOTICE, but it is VERY NECESSARY if we still want to exist later this year! If we do one dinner, and every student in LYS and LYCO sells 4 tickets, we can net $1500 and have a really fun party at the same time. If we do two dinners (like one after the other on the same evening), and everyone sells 8 tickets, we can net $3000 and have a really fun double party. Anyone who comes and serves food & fills water & acts as waiter will get to eat free. I need feedback on this ASAP, especially from people with great ideas or who are willing to put their shoulders to the wheel - or both. I will have ticket sales figured out by THIS SATURDAY so we can get started. The person in each orchestra who sells the most tickets will get a $25 gift card to the location of their choice! (We did this last year... and it was fun!)

 

There are members of the board currently looking into finding a fun large raffle item, and a few door prizes. If you have connections, suggestions, ideas, or anything like that, please don't hesitate to contact me!

 

A Note on Entertainment for the dinner: Last year we had musicians from the youth and adult orchestras perform during the dinner. This year, we are looking into having Aspen Strings or another professional quality musical group perform for our dinner music. Instead of feeling like we need to applaud after every selection like a recital, it will be background music that enhances the quality of the evening. If anyone has ideas for this, please let me know! 

 

Please get involved so we can save our organization!  We are still planning a bigger fundraiser this spring, like a benefit concert... Stay tuned on that one.

 

One other completely unrelated fundraising note: We have a family whose children play in both orchestras that owns a vending machine business. They have offered a 10% donation on anything they make on vending machines that we help find a location for. Stay tuned for more information!

It was great to see so many people even though it was a holiday weekend last Saturday.

 

We had a fun rehearsal! Gayle Mansfield worked with us on style and sound, assigned the brass to always do lip-slurs for warm-up before rehearsals; we marked some bowings, and worked hard. Without having had the music ahead of time, she covered whatever struck her as needed and it all worked out very nicely. Much better than if I had taken the rehearsal, that's for sure. Thank you, Gayle!

A Highly Interesting - and important - Tidbit

  

We are still revising our fundraising scheme for this year, and have made some progress toward a benefit concert that will draw more than just members of the orchestra and their families. Remember: please take the Gala Fundraising Dinner (Feb 21) off your schedule for now and stay tuned for further information. We are putting together a committee to address this, so please contact me if you are interested. I know how many excited people are going to email me about this. I can feel it in my bones! Really, "It could happen!" :)

Future Rehearsal Schedule

 

Important: There will be rehearsal Every Saturday from now until the concert Feb 28 and the trip to Abravanel Hall March 2. This includes MLK and President's Day weekends. The music is simply too challenging to skip any more Saturdays. Please arrange your schedules accordingly, and thank you in advance for any sacrifices you might make for the benefit of the group. This Saturday, January 17th, we will have a guest conductor for our rehearsal. Gayle Mansfield is going to do her best to be there for the rehearsal, and I hope she makes it... If she doesn't, then I will be your guest conductor!  Won't that be fun? 

 

Our condolences go to Mr. Findlay and his family. His grandma passed away a few days ago and he will be in Ephraim with his family this Saturday for the funeral. We hope he has a safe trip!

It was great to get back in the swing of things with you last Saturday.

 

We had a fun rehearsal! I love making music on a Saturday Morning. It's just the right thing to be doing. :)

 

Jana Gardner has resigned her position as principal flute to go to Weber State University for Early College and intense music studies. It was a rather sudden departure, and we wish her well. Jessica & Kandra did a great job trading off on the principal parts last weekend. Bravo, Girls! :) Thanks to Cami Dilg's continued support on French Horn; and let's keep talking to that bassoonist... You never know, "It could happen!"

 

Speaking of Bassoon, last Saturday we handed out the Tchaikovsky bassoon part to the cellos. If you weren't there, ask me for it this Saturday. There will be auditions for the solo at the end, so practice! This week we will also hand out the bassoon part for the Beethoven since we have a few holes that we need the cellos to fill in that piece as well. Thank you, cellos (and everyone, for that matter), for your willingness to work so hard.

Christmas Break Homework... Did you remember to number your measures?

 

Remember your Christmas Break homework to number your measures in the Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, please. With a PENCIL, write the measure number at the beginning of each line. Do not number every measure. It's too messy. Just so we are all on the "same page," and we don't have interesting experiences, here are the measure numbers at certain places in each piece of music:

Regular Saturday rehearsals begin again This Weekend, January 10. Rehearsals are from 8:30 (think 8:20) to 11:00 am. Thank you for being on time!  This means call time is 8:20 since you should arrive 5-10 minutes early to set up and be ready for downbeat at 8:30. If you are one of those consistently late people, just plan to leave 10 minutes earlier than you need to; then you will be on time! :)

Get Well Soon!

 

Linda Hansen (trombone) had surgery on her shoulder on Christmas Eve just a few days after (but not because of) playing in the Weber State Univ Honor Band. She must have had a wonderful vacation! We wish Linda a full and happy recovery and look forward to seeing her again in February!
