Hello NUYCO Family!
I hope everyone is having a fun and enjoyable summer so far. This email is to let you know that registration for the 2023 - 2024 season is now open. There are lots of exciting details and many changes below, so please read it all!
Important Dates:
July 21st - Concert Competition Registration is Due (due date was extended). We have also decided to open this up to members in NUYCO, NUYWE, and NUYPS. If your member has been working on something "professional", whether with piano or orchestral/symphonic accompaniment, we invite you to sign up for an audition!
August 12st - Concerto Auditions (Time and Location TBD)
August 26th - In-person Auditions @ PSEL
Sept. 16th - First Rehearsal (see time changes below)
Sept. 23rd - Parent Meetings (required for new families; suggested for returning families)
NUYCO will be back to rehearsing on Saturdays; as a result, rehearsal times have changed for most of the groups. We also have a new Chamber conductor, Dr. Ghyas Zeidieh. You can learn a little more about him here. You might notice that the name of our organization has changed from "Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra" to "Northern Utah Youth Ensembles." With the addition of the Wind Ensemble and Preparatory Strings, we felt that we needed a name that was more inclusive.
As we approach the new season, we could really use your help getting the word out to your fellow musician friends and encouraging them to audition. If you have younger siblings that play an instrument we would love to have them join one of our younger groups. Here is a general overview of each group (including rehearsal times), with links to their audition page:
Symphony (8:30 am - 11:00 am):
Need at least three years of playing experience on their instrument. As a symphonic group we are always looking for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion.
Chamber Orchestra (10:30 am - 12:00 pm):
For students who have had at least two years of playing experiences on a string instrument: violin, viola, cello, bass, harp
Wind Ensemble (11:30 am - 12:30 pm):
For students who have had at least two years of playing experience on a wind/brass/percussion instrument: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion. The Wind Ensemble and Chamber orchestra will collaborate from time to time on full symphonic pieces.
Preparatory Strings (9:00 am - 10:00 am):
For string students (violin, viola, cello, bass, harp) who have had at least 1 year of playing experience. This group focuses a lot on the basics and helps introduce ensemble playing skills.
If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. We can't wait to see most of you in August.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
