This Week's Rehearsal Announcements.

Greetings!

The countdown is on. We have 2 regular rehearsals left, plus the dress and the concert.

The retreat was valuable last weekend for the sheer number of hours of rehearsal. But by the end we only had half the orchestra left! So this week is all about putting the ensemble back together.

Please arrive with the intention to be super focused with your mind and your heart in the music. Put your phones away. Set them so they will not buzz at you. Airplane mode works well! 

The idea that we can be fully focused while multitasking is a fallacy. You will never be fully focused if you don't stick to the task at hand.

Here is the schedule for Saturday:

We will keep everyone together. No sectionals scheduled. Our theme this week is all about ensemble. Playing as a team.

Scales & warm-up - 8.30 to 8.45

Mendelssohn - 8.45 to 9.45

Break - 9.45 to 9.50

Narnia - 9.50 to 10.50

Tintinabulations - 10.50 to 11.00

Stamitz people - Mr Dunn would like 5 minutes with you after rehearsal - this will be 4 people in each string section, 2 horns (Tanner & Graeme), 2 oboes (Elly & Alexis).

Messiah:

The schedule for the Messiah rehearsal this coming Saturday, November 2nd is the following: 

11:15 - Noon: strings and trumpet

Noon - 12:45: strings, trumpet, and bass soloist, Bill Weaver

The music we will focus on is the following:

   #5 - Thus Saith the Lord (with bass soloist)

   #6 - But Who May Abide the Day of His Coming? (with bass soloist)

   #12 - For Unto Us a Child is Born

   #17 - Glory to God

   #44 - Hallelujah

   #47 - Behold, I Tell You a Mystery (with bass soloist)

   #48 - The Trumpet Shall Sound (with bass soloist)

   #53 - Worthy is the Lamb - Amen

Ogden High School - Fall Concert Details

Concert Day Details

I hope you all noticed that I just sent out a press release for the concert. Do forward it to friends and family. In addition, here is a link to the facebook event that you can also share around. 

Here is a schedule for Saturday, November 16, 2019, at Ogden High School, 2828 Harrison Blvd, Ogden:

10:30 am set up 

11:00 am to 1:15 pm NUYS Dress Rehearsal (Dress rehearsal just means "on the stage" - you can change during the break, if you like)

1:30 pm to 2:30 pm NUYCO Dress Rehearsal (NUYS break for lunch & changing clothes)

2:30 pm call time for the concert

3:00 pm concert

This concert is at Ogden High School. We appreciate their having us back each year to perform in their gorgeous auditorium. It's a restored treasure from another era. 

The school is a city school, and parking can be tricky. In the picture below, the orange areas are parking areas. The best entrances for the auditorium are on the south side of the school (lower part of the map below). Please warn your guests to allow plenty of time to find parking.

Dress Code

As this is our first performance, it is also good to mention our dress code. Ladies wear all black. Men wear black slacks, black suit jacket, black socks (long enough to cover the ankle when sitting), a BLACK BOW TIE, and a white dress shirt.

Press Release - Northern Utah Youth Symphony Fall Concert

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra will present their first concerto of the 2019-20 Season: Spooky Fantasia Festival: Halloween, Enchanted Journeys, and Christmas. The concert is Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 3:00 pm, at the historic Ogden High School Auditorium, 2828 Harrison Blvd. Admission is free.

The Northern Utah Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Nathan West, will open the concert with a Halloween-themed program featuring The Curse of the Rosin-Eating Zombies, music from The Addams Family, Deborah Baker Monday's Dies Irae Fantasia, as well as Creepy Classics, featuring themes from Danse Macabre and Night on Bald Mountain.

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony, conducted by Maestro Conrad Dunn, will then take the stage. Their program includes Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream and a suite from the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Ashley Montgomery, a senior at Ogden High School, will be their featured performer, with a Clarinet Concerto by Karl Stamitz. Their final number will introduce the Christmas spirit. Tintinabulations is a medley of variations on Jingle Bells like you've never heard it before.

Ashley Montgomery has been playing clarinet for 6 years and currently studies under Cindy Child.  This will be her fourth year playing with NUYS. She is a senior at Ogden High School where she serves as section leader in the OHS Marching Band as well as being the principal clarinetist in the Wind Ensemble. She has received superior ratings at both state and region solo and ensemble.

Ashley has performed with the Utah Symphony in the All-Star Youth Pro Am concert. She was part of the Golden Spike 150 Year Celebration Band. This last summer Ashley had the opportunity to perform in Europe with the Utah Ambassadors of Music.

Ashley enjoys the sciences and plans to continue playing clarinet in college while majoring in geology.

Ashley would like to thank the many music teachers and mentors who have inspired and pushed her to become a better musician throughout the years.

Rehearsal No. 6, Important Retreat Announcements & Schedule

Here is the schedule for this Saturday's rehearsal. I know it's everyone's fall break, but if you are in town, please remember to come to rehearsal! And if you are not coming, please fill out the Attendance form.

Messiah 11:15 to 12:30 in the library, focussing on choruses, winds and brass coming at noon (we need to extend time since we have retreat next week - bring a snack if you need one).

Retreat Schedule 2019

This will be our tenth annual retreat. Not only do we have fun, we get to know each other, experience a top-quality musical experience, and have three full rehearsals for our upcoming concert. If you cannot stay the night, please be sure to attend as much of the retreat as possible on Friday evening, Saturday morning and/or afternoon. We can let you know what the cost is for the meals you eat if you are unable to stay overnight. We are assuming you are going unless you tell us otherwise.

Approximate Schedule

Friday October 25

4:30pm     Adults, any youth helpers & equipment arrive & set up

5:00pm     Youth arrive, set up sleeping quarters, meet in the lodge

6:00pm      Dinner

6:30pm      Orchestra Rehearsal (with break)

8:30pm      Introductions, Play whack-em (you'll probably like it) & other games.   

10:00pm    Bedtime

10:30pm    Lights out

Saturday October 26

7:30am     Rise & Shine, pack up, roll up sleeping bags, etc.

8:00am     Breakfast. Create skit groups.

8:30am     **Outdoor pictures with instruments wearing t-shirts (no bows)

9:00am      Orchestra Rehearsal

11:00am     Prepare Skits

11:30pm     Skit Performances

12:30pm     Lunch

1:00pm       Clean cabins; bring luggage to lodge or out to porches (weather permitting)

1:30pm       Orchestra Rehearsal (with break)

4:00pm       Snack & debrief

4:30pm       Final cleaning (lodge & bathrooms)

5:00pm       Youth picked up, head home before dark (Sunset is 6:30pm)

** This may be adjusted according to availability of photographer.

Families are responsible for transportation and are encouraged to arrange carpooling.

*Be sure to bring a sturdy music stand with your name on it. As not everyone has a sturdy stand, if you have more than one STURDY music stand, bring those too.

*If you have a battery powered LED book light, stand light, or reading light, you may find it useful during rehearsal.

*Saturday Snacks: Head for the Volunteer spreadsheet and sign up to bring sliced apples, chips & dip, veggies, or cookies/brownies.

WHERE: Camp UTABA, a year-round heated camp facility in Ogden Valley, dedicated to offering affordable lodging for religious, educational, and family gatherings in a safe and beautiful environment.
It is 5 miles north of the top of North Ogden Divide.

RESTROOMS & SHOWERS: There is a restroom facility in the main lodge, as well as restrooms and showers in a separate building with lovely hot water.

Rehearsal No. 5, this Saturday

Greetings!

Here is today's regular email regarding this week's rehearsal.

Rehearsal time is back to normal: 8:30 to 11:00, then Messiah to noon (let us know if you want to). Be sure to do a few jumping jacks before rehearsal so we're all awake. 

How do we take something that we can play slow, and play it fast enough? This is our new normal question!

The solution is to do individual practice at home, so that you have the tools in your toolbox to have a fighting chance of playing it fast enough for the concert. We will talk more about this at rehearsal on Saturday. In the meantime, spend some concentrated time and practice smart, with a goal in mind. 

Rehearsal this week will look like this:

8:30 to 9:30 - Sectionals 

Brass - Regular Spot (left hall, to the right)

Woodwinds - Regular Spot (right hall, to the left), with our guest clinician Cindy Child

1st Violins - in library (chamber is at their retreat this weekend)

2nd Violins - on stage. Join 1st Violins in Library at 9:10

Violas - Entrance hall

Cellos - in the gym

Basses - in the nook by the art class

9:30 - break
9:35 - full orchestra

Narnia - Approximately 30 minutes
Tintinabulations - Research the different styles in the piece
Tools for practice (short discussion)

Mendelssohn - Remainder of the time

Style, dynamics, is there a soloist playing right now? Add these to your toolbox as you practice the Stamitz at home. We will work on it again next week, and on the Friday of the retreat.

Invitation to participate in Messiah

This is the last of my three emails today. 

This message is from Doris D'Asto, the chairman of the board, and this year's organizer of the our Brigham City Messiah Sing-in. Mr Dunn did mention last Saturday that our five rehearsals for Messiah would begin this coming Saturday, and that they would end by noon, beginning just after regular rehearsal.

Here is the information from Doris:

Hello,

  We are now organizing for this year's presentation of Messiah on Friday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m.  Would you please let me know if you will be able to perform with us and, after reviewing the schedule, if you can make most of the rehearsals?

   Here are the details for this year:

• We have confirmed the following dates for the Tabernacle: Dress Rehearsal on Thursday, December 5th, 2019; performance on Friday, December 6th at 7 p.m.
• We have confirmation from all four vocalists who will be performing with us this year as well as our star trumpet player, James.
  
• Conrad Dunn will once again conduct our Messiah orchestra.  He asks for musicians to try and attend every rehearsal.  There are only 5 Saturday rehearsals scheduled.
• Rehearsals will be like last year: right after the Youth Symphony and Chamber orchestras end at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday mornings at the Promontory School of Expeditionary Learning in Perry.
• Josie Anderson, our Music Librarian/Managing Assistant, will be signing out music this Saturday for those who need to borrow it.
  
• Please note that there are Saturdays we absolutely cannot rehearse due to Symphony Retreat, Symphony/Chamber November concert, and Thanksgiving Break.  
• Last year we had a desperate situation with few 1st violinists, even at the Dress Rehearsal.  Please help us have good attendance and an excellent, inspiring presentation of Messiah."

Sponsorship Drive

Greetings! 

This is the second of three emails I will be sending today (although the first will not be posted on the blog). I chose to split them up so they would each get the attention they deserve. It is not usually like this!

I have had a few requests for a letter of solicitation for our sponsorship drive.

Here is the letter. It includes the sponsorship page from last year's program so you can show them an example. In addition to the program, sponsors are also listed on press releases and social media events. 

Thank you so much for your help with this! These yearly sponsors are incredibly important and we feel deep gratitude to them each year as about half of from last year have supported us on a yearly basis. 

So, spread the word! Let's get all our sponsors in all 3 programs this year!

We will start in sectionals right at 8 am - even the strings - and will reconvene at 8:30 for full rehearsal until 10:00.
