Hello. My name is Roger Morandi. I am currently Symphony President and principal oboe with the Oquirrh Mountain Symphony, a multi-community orchestra based in the southern Salt Lake valley in Herriman, UT.

I am writing to your organization to make sure you are aware of an exciting opportunity for the members of the Lincoln Youth Symphony.

The Oquirrh Mountain Symphony is pleased to announce our Concerto Competition for 2013. Winners of this Ninth Annual Concerto Competition are invited to perform with the Oquirrh Mountain Symphony at our Spotlight Spectacular concert in May 2013.

I hope you will be willing to help spread the word to the staff, families and students of the Lincoln Youth Symphony to make this wonderful performing opportunity available to them.

I have attached a PDF file of our Concerto Competition Announcement Card (four cards per sheet) to this email. I would encourage you and your staff to forward this email to any student or performer who would like the opportunity to solo with a live orchestra. Alternatively, the PDF file can be printed and cut to be distributed at rehearsal or placed where interested students may pick one up.

Registration is currently open by going to www.omsymphony.org/concerto and clicking on Registration. Applicants are now able to complete the entire registration process on-line, no mailing required.  The registration deadline is January 25, 2013. Late registration is available after the deadline until February 8, with an additional $10.00 fee. The competition date is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2013. The location of the competition will be announced shortly.

Here is some basic information about the competition.

We have five competition categories:

Youth Instrumentalists and Vocalists - age 12 and under;

Junior Instrumentalists - ages 13 to 16;

Senior Instrumentalists - ages 17 to 20;

Adult/Open Instrumentalists - age 21 and over;

Vocalists - age 13 and over.

Each category will be judged by a panel of three judges selected by our Music Director and Conductor, Benjamin Winkler. In addition to the five category winners, our Conductor has the option to invite the Youth category runner-up as well as a Competition-wide Conductor's Choice winner to perform.

Complete competition details, an informative FAQ page and a link to the online registration page can be accessed at www.omsymphony.org/concerto. We also have a list of ineligible works for 2013. This list includes the works performed by the winners of the last two years of competition. These works have been excluded from competition to help us avoid repetition of the same piece every year as we have unfortunately experienced in the past. Applicants should be sure to review this list before registering.

Greetings!

Today was a great rehearsal. I missed playing along, but it has been great to sort music and listen. I knew it was going to be a stupendous day when I saw a young man with a trombone... and then it only got better and better.  Thank you for your dedication and for just being awesome people!

Today we collected the Berlioz Hungarian March from the Damnation of Faust and Holst's Somerset Rhapsody. If you missed today and still have them in your folder, please turn them in to me next week. It was interesting to sight-read them last week, but we are putting them away in favor of the pieces we handed out this morning.

LYS: Rehearsal, Concert Information, Group Photo Attire

Greetings!

Two-Part Prelude:

1. To all who participated in the concerto auditions last week (some were from our orchestra, some were not), thank you for an incredibly inspiring afternoon! I absolutely loved being part of that, and the only part I didn't like was having to choose a few to play for the concerts in February and April. That part was hard! Thanks to Sam & Doris for being on the panel. There will be more information on this as time goes on (especially since we will be rehearsing for this after Thanksgiving). So, those selected to perform are ... drum roll please ... Jennifer Ban (Piano, Beethoven); Paisley Tarboton (Violin, Bruch); Taylor Robbins (Cello, Haydn); Nathan Brown (Violin, Chen Gang and He Zhanhao); and alternate Krystal Matheson (Trumpet, Hummel). Again, I wish we could have chosen everyone, and I hope we will have a great experience accompanying these wonderful musicians on their solos. For those who weren't chosen, come back and audition again!
   
   
2. Thank you to all who came to the retreat, to all who drove, to our chaperones, and to everyone who put up with the food. It wasn't great, but it was food, and we are thinking about doing something better & less expensive next year for food and even have a volunteer to head up the effort... Isn't Camp Utaba great?  :)

Tomorrow's Rehearsal

So, tomorrow's rehearsal (November 10, 2012) is a normal rehearsal with wind & brass sectionals. It's at Promontory School, as usual, from 8:30 to 11:00 am. It's also our last rehearsal before Concert Day, so be there & be prepared!

Next Week's Rehearsal

Next week's rehearsal (November 17, 2012) will be at the regular time (8:30 to 11:00 am) but it will be on the stage at Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City. 

Group Photo: Big Announcement

We will be taking a group picture at the end of our rehearsal before the LYCO rehearsal ... WEAR your CONCERT ATTIRE for the rehearsal! This is a change from previous years. A CHANGE! Yes, dress up for the rehearsal. You don't have to button the top of your manly dress shirts or put on your ties until it's time for the photo, but please wear your black slacks, black socks, black shoes, black suit jacket, black bowtie, and white dress shirt for the photo. But not if you're a girl. Girls don't have to wear that stuff. They wear all black: black shoes, black nylons/tights/trouser socks, black blouses (or black dresses)... You know what I mean, right? Dressy & black with sleeves and black legs. Pictures. With instruments. Fun. Yeah. I'm Excited!

Concert

The concert that evening is at 5pm. Call time is 4:30. Concert order: Mt Olympus Waters Honors Quartet from the University of Utah Graduate School (including Sam Runolfson, cello); LYCO; LYS. We expect to be finished by 6:30pm at the latest. We know some people have pits or other concerts to head for! :) Check the press release or Facebook event or Now Playing Utah link for admission information. YES... We all contribute to the rental of the auditorium by paying a small admission fee. Let's find a few sponsors so we don't have to pay! Anyone want to head up the effort for the next concert? :)

Press Release: Lincoln Youth Symphony & Chamber Orchestra Presenting Concert with Guest String Quartet

The Lincoln Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra will be presenting their first concert of the season with special guest artists The Mount Olympus Waters Honors String Quartet. The concert will be Saturday, November 17, 2012, at 5:00pm, Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City. Admission $3 Adults, $2 Students/Seniors, $12 Family (under-one-roof).

Guest artists Mount Olympus String Quartet, an honors quartet from the University of Utah graduate school, will open the concert with a Dvorak string quartet.

The Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Amanda Kippen, will follow with Grieg's "Anitra's Dance", Corelli's "Christmas Concerto", Rimsky-Korsakov's "Dance of the Tumblers", and a fun arrangement combining "Carol of the Bells" and "Greensleeves". LYCO is an audition-only string training orchestra for Lincoln Youth Symphony.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony, with new conductor Samuel Runolfson, will conclude the concert with two movements from Beethoven's "7th Symphony", Brahms' "Hungarian Dance No. 5", an arrangement of Hatikvah (the Israeli national anthem), and a selection of Christmas Carols. LYS is an audition-only full orchestra looking forward to attending the Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall in February 2013.

These orchestras are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, with funding from the George S & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, and the Annual Gala Fundraiser Dinner. LBSS is especially grateful for the support of families, friends, and local businesses in the Brigham City, Tremonton, Logan, and Ogden areas.

Please bring a music stand! We have hauled our music stands to camp in the past, but we lack the transportation to do it this time. If everyone tries to remember to bring one (even if you normally share), then there will be enough stands! Please label your stand with your name. If it comes apart, label all the pieces.

The camp cook needs to know if there is anyone with special dietary needs. Please let me know asap.

Retreat Schedule 2012

This will be our third annual retreat. Not only do we have fun, we get to know each other better, and experience a top quality workshop, as well as rehearse for our upcoming concert. If you cannot stay the night, please be sure to attend as much of the retreat as possible on either Friday evening or Saturday morning or both. We can let you know what the cost is for the meals you eat if you don't spend the night.

Accommodations

My kids tell me this is NOT camping! The heated cabins have dorm-style bunkbeds with mattresses on them. The beds are more comfortable if you bring a blanket/quilt to put under your sleeping bag. If you need to go at night, you will have to walk to the bathrooms (which have showers and even flush toilets J), or the lodge – so be prepared for inclement weather!

OCTOBER 26-27, 2012

     The Lincoln Youth Symphony is hosting an overnight music camp on Friday, October 26, 2012 to Saturday, October 27, 2012.  All youth participating in Lincoln Youth Symphony are requested to attend if at all possible (partial attendance is allowed in special circumstances).  There are two main goals of this camp:  to become better acquainted with our new conductor, Sam Runolfson, and your fellow orchestra members; and to delve into the concert repertoire the orchestra will perform November 17. There will be several different activities planned for the youth, including evening skits, outrageous musical performances, full orchestra rehearsals, and morning workshops led by experienced musicians.

     To keep their energy up, we will serve them three meals during the camp which should sustain them during all these activities. In their free time, the youth will be able to enjoy the fresh open air and beauty of this secluded camp in Ogden Valley during autumn. 

     There will be no bus service to the camp. Families are responsible for transportation and are encouraged to arrange carpooling.

WHERE:    Camp UTABA, a year-round heated camp facility in Ogden Valley, dedicated to offering affordable lodging for religious, educational, and family gatherings in a safe and beautiful environment.  It is 5 miles north from the bottom of the North Ogden Pass.  Please go to Camp UTABA’s website for further information:

Prier String Quartet Celebration

A Message from Utah Symphony:

Hello,

I've attached a flyer with information about a very special string quartet recital on October 20.

Peter Prier has created a tonally matched quartet of string instruments intended to be played together, as a quartet.  To celebrate this, four Utah Symphony musicians will give a recital on them at the Salt Lake City Recital Hall, 8 pm on October 20. The recital is free; donations are welcome.

Here is the announcement you've all been waiting for:

We are NOT changing any of the schedule! Yes, there will be a few people who miss Saturday Morning at the retreat for the ACT, but they can still come FRIDAY! We tried to change things, but it just wasn't working out - we would have missed about the same number of people the following week & would have had to change concerto auditions, into the bargain.

Here is the schedule for the next few weeks:

LYS: Fun Day!

Greetings!

Great rehearsal & auditions today! I could feel the energy in the room. Very cool. I think Sam's pretty fun! I hope you do too. (Thanks, Promontory, for our new rehearsal space!)

A few things I forgot to announce:

1. Be sure you pick up an acceptance and payment form next week if you didn't get one this week. 

2. Careful with the music: You are responsible to keep the music flat and in good condition. If the folder I gave you is too big for you, you may choose to alter the folder size or even use a different one, but if you have any over-sized music in your folder, then a smaller sized folder may not protect the music. Please be aware of the music!

3. Rehearsal next week is regular time: 8:30 to 11:00 am. We will hear any new members audition after rehearsal or during break. Bring pencils for marking music! 

4. If you are taking the ACT Oct 27, please hit reply and let me know RIGHT NOW. This is a potential problem because our retreat is that weekend. 

For the record: We sightread today. What great brain exercise this was! Brahms Hungarian Dance No 5, and Beethoven 7th Symphony, 2nd and then 1st movements. It is fun making music with Sam, even when he's singing. And even when the music is hard. 

Remember, bring friends, especially flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn, & trombone players! And strings, too! :)

Highlight of the day: wasn't it just cool to have two oboes? I thought it was amazing.

Press Release: Lincoln Youth Symphony Auditions September 29

Join Lincoln Youth Symphony's 2012-2013 Season with new conductor Sam Runolfson! 

Auditions are open for all instruments including Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion, Violin, Viola, Cello, and String Bass. LYS Musicians come from the Cache Valley, Tremonton, Brigham City, and Ogden areas. 

LYS rehearses Saturdays, 8:30-11:00 am, at Promontory School, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry, the new charter school near Brigham City. They will be holding auditions before and after their first rehearsal, September 29, 2012. 

Returning members need not audition, but all new members are encouraged to make an appointment and audition!

Do I Need To Audition? 

Due to a timing issue, returning members of LYS need not audition this year. New members will audition before and after our rehearsal Sept 29.  Please note that this first rehearsal will be somewhat shortened and will run from 9:30am to 11am. All musicians & prospective musicians need to attend the rehearsal that day.

Online Appointment Scheduling for all NEW musicians:

An audition schedule has been posted and appointments can be made online. Click on the following link: Appointment Slots to access our online appointments. (You may have to click forward until you find Sept 29!). You need a free google calendar account to sign up, and when you set the appointment, it will appear on your calendar. If you need to change the appointment, simply delete the appointment on your calendar and it will open up a space for someone else on the appointment calendar. If you do not have Google Calendar, please contact me via email with the time you prefer and I will set it up for you - but it's easier to make changes, etc., if you have your own google calendar!

I am about to send several emails. It's mostly about how they post on the website... So I'm sorry if you feel inundated. It also may make different topics easier to separate.

I give you this link instead of typing up a calendar simply because there are still a couple things to finalize - mostly when to do spring break since no two school districts agree this year!

LYS: New Rehearsal Space

We will be in a new location this year!


Promontory School of Expeditionary Learning at 1001 West 2700 South, Perry, has offered us rehearsal space in trade for using our music stands and percussion equipment. We are so pleased as this will free up funds for regular LYS section specialists! 


There is currently an Eagle project going on to fix up our music stands so they can be used at the new school. The ribbon cutting is coming up August 11th! 


Thank you, PSEL! This is the beginning of a fabulous partnership.


Concerts will still be at Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City.

LYS: Rehearsal Time Change

This year's regular Saturday rehearsals will begin at 8:30 am and end at 11:00 am. This is a time adjustment from last year, and will hopefully accommodate more people's Saturday plans. 

Sam, our new conductor, has requested this change to better serve you! So, bleary-eyed or not, we are starting at 8:30! :)

LYS: Concerto Auditions

Concerto Auditions are open to all youth through high school age regardless of membership in Lincoln Youth Symphony, although non-members are asked to make a $20 donation to the organization at the audition. 


There are several dates to remember in regards to Concerto Auditions & Performance Opportunities:


September 29, 2012: Music Approval Deadline -- please submit to Julie Gardner by this date. The music you want to perform must be available and playable, and we can't know if you don't ask!


November 3, 2012: 11:15am @ Promontory School: Concerto Auditions


If you are selected to perform with the Lincoln Youth Symphony, you may be included in either of two concerts, depending on how the programming works out:

February 9, 2013 or April 20, 2013

LYS: No Peach Days Concert

Announcement:

Because of our change of venue, we cannot move into the new school until after August 15. This leaves very little time for rehearsal -- so there will be no LYS/LYCO/LBCS participation in Peach Days this year. Perhaps we'll play at Peach Days next year!

Press Release: Lincoln Youth Symphony's New Conductor!

Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society proudly presents the new Lincoln Youth Symphony Conductor! After two wonderful years, Robert Bott has moved and can no longer continue conducting for us, and we are very fortunate to have Samuel Runolfson carrying on the tradition of excellence by taking over as conductor of Brigham City's Lincoln Youth Symphony. His musical endeavors have been exciting to watch over the years, including a trip to the MTNA National Finals with a chamber music trio!

Samuel Runolfson grew up in Ogden and is a Graduate from Weber State University in the Music Education program. Samuel is currently attending the University of Utah for a Masters in Cello Performance. Samuel began playing the cello in Middle School and has since studied with Dr. Paul Joines, Pegsoon Whang, Dr. Viktor Uzur and is currently studying with Elliot Cheney. Samuel has been principal cellist of the Weber State Symphony Orchestra, the New American Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra Ogden. An avid chamber musician Samuel has performed in quartets, quintets and trios throughout Northern Utah and has spent countless hours in the public schools performing, lecturing and teaching music to students from Elementary to High School. Samuel also performed and taught in Haiti during the summer of 2008. Samuel has conducted the Bonneville Youth Orchestra, Weber State Symphony Orchestra, the Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, Morgan Valley Strings, and various High Schools and Jr. High Schools for clinics, as well as festivals.

His contributions to our program will be fabulous!
