Concert Venue Announcement

Greetings!

As we have struggled to make the right decisions about finding a concert venue, it has become apparent that we, as an orchestra whose members come from all over Northern Utah, can certainly reflect that by "going on the road". We have definitely grown out of the stage and facilities at the Box Elder Middle School, and we are also very grateful for the support they have given us over the years. They are wonderful! We also do not have access to the excellent facilities at Box Elder High School this year as our dates all conflict. 

Last Saturday I announced that we were working on securing Bear River High School Auditorium for the Feb 1 concert. This did NOT work out for Feb 1; however, we are penciled in for the April 19 concert there. Then, yesterday, I experienced a little miracle, and we have been offered an opportunity to perform at Logan High School Auditorium on Feb 1.

We have also chosen to experiment with the timing of the rehearsals that day, instead of having everyone come in the morning and then come back in the evening. 

Please make a note of this, and clear your schedule for Feb 1. Please accept my apologies if this causes difficulties with your schedule. 

Here are the details:

What: Concerto Night, LYS & LYCO concert

Where: Logan High School Auditorium, 162 W 100 S, Logan, Utah

When: February 1, 2014

LYS Rehearsal: 1-3 pm

LYCO Rehearsal: 3-4 pm

Call Time: 4:30 pm

Concert: 5-6:30 pm (Order: LYCO then LYS)

Sponsor: To Be Announced (with sponsor, free admission)

Admission: To Be Announced... Hopefully free.

Please note that we will continue to experiment with moving around for our concerts, reflecting the different areas that our students hail from, also depending on availability of facilities, sponsors, and costs. 

The press release will be ready Thursday night (tomorrow night) which will have fun details about our soloists, and sponsor, etc. :)

After last week's rehearsal, our guest artist flutist Jana Lange suggested that, in preparation for rehearsal, musicians should learn their parts at home so that they can learn others' parts at rehearsal. One great way to do this, she suggested, is to look up the music and listen to the pieces in preparation for the rehearsal. Hi,

 We're planning on a fun Christmas party after rehearsal ends Saturday Dec 14. Please let us know if you'll stay for some treats and fun.

 This is what you need to do: 

• Bring a treat to share, (or fruit, or whatever is GOOD!).
  
• Bring a white elephant gift - something no one at home wants anymore and Mom and Dad will be ecstatic to see it go out the door - wrapped!
  

 We're bringing the swimming noodle, too......You know what that means!

White Elephant

Extra Extra! 

Look around your house for some old, funny, or awful white elephant gift. Don't spend money, just wrap something and bring it along to the party. I've seen some real hum-dingers over the years, but the best was a bowling ball that had been used as a landscape ornament for 30 years. It was ... heavy and "lovely."

Christmas Party!

A Message from our Chairman of the Board:

Hello,

 When we made up the schedule for this performance season, we did not forget to include some time for festivities and socializing! We've just been so busy, we forgot to tell you our plans!!!

 We would like to end this year with a Christmas gathering after rehearsal on this coming Saturday, December 14. Please reply to this email if you could stay 45 minutes after rehearsal and attend. Last year we did it for the first time, and it was enjoyed a lot by everyone. If possible, please bring a treat. I will contact parents who indicated they might want to help.

 If you wonder what's good to bring, something sweet is always popular; or some fruit cut up; or cheese and crackers would help provide something more substantial.

 We'll take care of drinks and plates, etc. See you there!

Greetings! 

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and made it to Saturday's rehearsal! Bravo. I hope all made it home safely. It's been quite a weekend, weather-wise!

Thank you to all who performed in the Nov 23 concert. You all did a great job, and everyone who played turned in their music (which made me really really happy). If you didn't play in the concert and haven't turned in your music, please do so. My least favorite job is hunting down music!!!!

New Music:

We have collected the Frescobaldi and the Respighi, and in addition to keeping the Egmont Overture and Bounty Hunter (which we may play at Abravanel Hall on March 3), we have handed out the following for the February 1 Concerto Concert: 

• Hummel's Trumpet Concerto (3rd Movement)
  to be performed by our own Krystal Matheson
• Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A Minor (3rd Movement)
  to be performed by LYCO's Kristene Murrow
• Mozart's Piano Concerto no 23 (3rd Movement)
  to be performed by David Ban
• Hardiman's Lord of the Dance
• Schubert's Rosamunde Overture

and next week we will hand out one other piece, Themes from Also Sprach Zarathustra, which we sightread this week and the brass players were pretty excited about.

We have one other concerto on order; it's for the April concert but the music is quite difficult, so we will need to start working on it asap. It is 

• MacDowell's Piano Concerto no. 2 (1st movement) to be performed by Joshua Musselman (some of you may remember him -- he performed the Liszt Piano Concerto with us two years ago). 

Schedule:

We will have one other regular rehearsal this year -- December 14, 8:30 to 11:00 am at Promontory, and then we have a couple weeks off for the holidays. We will resume January 4, and rehearse every week until our next concert, which is coming right up on February 1. 

Please let us know when you won't be at rehearsal (and why). The easiest way to do this is by replying to this email, or sending a text to Julie at 435 740 4335.

Information will be available soon regarding the upcoming Gala Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction scheduled for March 15.

Details for this Saturday's Concert

Schedule:

Morning rehearsal: 8:30-11:00am, Box Elder Middle School, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City (LYCO rehearses right after us, 11-12)

Concert Call Time: 4:30pm

Concert begins: 5:00pm (see the press release for additional information)

Sponsor:

Notice the ad I put up on the website for the sponsor for this concert. Classical Strings is making it possible for free admission to the concert!

Recording:

We do not have an official recording arranged for this concert. If you are making a recording, please let me know if you are willing to share. A decent digital video camera actually makes a very nice sound recording!

Audience:

Let's fill the auditorium! Invite friends and family. Also, please let your guests know that there are people recording the concert, so concert etiquette is appreciated.

Clothing:

You do not need to dress up for the dress rehearsal; it's just "dress" because it's on the stage. Concert dress for the evening is as follows:

Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.

Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.

Music Folders:

Please be prepared to turn in your music after the concert in the folder I gave you. If you are not using it on the stand during the concert, you can even hand it to me before the concert. I get really excited when everyone hands in their music at once. It just makes my day!  I will fill your folder with new music during the holiday.

Next Rehearsal:

We will be taking Thanksgiving weekend off, and starting rehearsals again December 7th, at Promontory School, 8:30-11:00am.

Press Release: Upcoming Youth Symphony Concert

Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is proud to present Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra in their 2013-14 season opening concert, "Symphonic Sampler," which will be Saturday, November 23, 5:00pm, at the Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City. Admission to this concert is FREE thanks to the generous sponsorship of Classical Strings Sales, Repairs and Rentals, Grover Wilhelmsen (owner).

The concert will open with the all-strings Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Amanda Kippen. They will be performing arrangements of Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice", Percy Faith's "Brazilian Sleigh Bells", a Gregorian Chant transcribed by Conley called "Kyrie Eleison", and Sean O'Loughlin's exciting all-pizzicato piece "Firewalk".

Lincoln Youth Symphony will then present their debut performance under the baton of new conductor Conrad Dunn with an eclectic program including Beethoven's "Egmont Overture", Frescobaldi's "Toccata", Respighi's "Ancient Dances and Airs", and the Bounty Hunter Theme from Video Games Live .

Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded by George S & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, and their annual Gala Dinner and Silent Auction which is generously supported by local businesses, friends, and family.
