• Bring a treat to share, (or fruit, or whatever is GOOD!).
  
• Bring a white elephant gift - something no one at home wants anymore and Mom and Dad will be ecstatic to see it go out the door - wrapped!
  

 We're bringing the swimming noodle, too......You know what that means!

White Elephant

Extra Extra! 

Look around your house for some old, funny, or awful white elephant gift. Don't spend money, just wrap something and bring it along to the party. I've seen some real hum-dingers over the years, but the best was a bowling ball that had been used as a landscape ornament for 30 years. It was ... heavy and "lovely."

A Message from our Chairman of the Board:

Hello,

 When we made up the schedule for this performance season, we did not forget to include some time for festivities and socializing! We've just been so busy, we forgot to tell you our plans!!!

 We would like to end this year with a Christmas gathering after rehearsal on this coming Saturday, December 14. Please reply to this email if you could stay 45 minutes after rehearsal and attend. Last year we did it for the first time, and it was enjoyed a lot by everyone. If possible, please bring a treat. I will contact parents who indicated they might want to help.

 If you wonder what's good to bring, something sweet is always popular; or some fruit cut up; or cheese and crackers would help provide something more substantial.

 We'll take care of drinks and plates, etc. See you there!

Greetings! 

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and made it to Saturday's rehearsal! Bravo. I hope all made it home safely. It's been quite a weekend, weather-wise!

Thank you to all who performed in the Nov 23 concert. You all did a great job, and everyone who played turned in their music (which made me really really happy). If you didn't play in the concert and haven't turned in your music, please do so. My least favorite job is hunting down music!!!!

New Music:

We have collected the Frescobaldi and the Respighi, and in addition to keeping the Egmont Overture and Bounty Hunter (which we may play at Abravanel Hall on March 3), we have handed out the following for the February 1 Concerto Concert: 

• Hummel's Trumpet Concerto (3rd Movement)
  to be performed by our own Krystal Matheson
• Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A Minor (3rd Movement)
  to be performed by LYCO's Kristene Murrow
• Mozart's Piano Concerto no 23 (3rd Movement)
  to be performed by David Ban
• Hardiman's Lord of the Dance
• Schubert's Rosamunde Overture

and next week we will hand out one other piece, Themes from Also Sprach Zarathustra, which we sightread this week and the brass players were pretty excited about.

We have one other concerto on order; it's for the April concert but the music is quite difficult, so we will need to start working on it asap. It is 

• MacDowell's Piano Concerto no. 2 (1st movement) to be performed by Joshua Musselman (some of you may remember him -- he performed the Liszt Piano Concerto with us two years ago). 

Schedule:

We will have one other regular rehearsal this year -- December 14, 8:30 to 11:00 am at Promontory, and then we have a couple weeks off for the holidays. We will resume January 4, and rehearse every week until our next concert, which is coming right up on February 1. 

Please let us know when you won't be at rehearsal (and why). The easiest way to do this is by replying to this email, or sending a text to Julie at 435 740 4335.

Information will be available soon regarding the upcoming Gala Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction scheduled for March 15.

Details for this Saturday's Concert

Schedule:

Morning rehearsal: 8:30-11:00am, Box Elder Middle School, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City (LYCO rehearses right after us, 11-12)

Concert Call Time: 4:30pm

Concert begins: 5:00pm (see the press release for additional information)

Recording:

We do not have an official recording arranged for this concert. If you are making a recording, please let me know if you are willing to share. A decent digital video camera actually makes a very nice sound recording!

Audience:

Let's fill the auditorium! Invite friends and family. Also, please let your guests know that there are people recording the concert, so concert etiquette is appreciated.

Clothing:

You do not need to dress up for the dress rehearsal; it's just "dress" because it's on the stage. Concert dress for the evening is as follows:

Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.

Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.

Music Folders:

Please be prepared to turn in your music after the concert in the folder I gave you. If you are not using it on the stand during the concert, you can even hand it to me before the concert. I get really excited when everyone hands in their music at once. It just makes my day!  I will fill your folder with new music during the holiday.

We will be taking Thanksgiving weekend off, and starting rehearsals again December 7th, at Promontory School, 8:30-11:00am.

Press Release: Upcoming Youth Symphony Concert

Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is proud to present Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra in their 2013-14 season opening concert, "Symphonic Sampler," which will be Saturday, November 23, 5:00pm, at the Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City. Admission to this concert is FREE thanks to the generous sponsorship of Classical Strings Sales, Repairs and Rentals, Grover Wilhelmsen (owner).

The concert will open with the all-strings Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Amanda Kippen. They will be performing arrangements of Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice", Percy Faith's "Brazilian Sleigh Bells", a Gregorian Chant transcribed by Conley called "Kyrie Eleison", and Sean O'Loughlin's exciting all-pizzicato piece "Firewalk".

Lincoln Youth Symphony will then present their debut performance under the baton of new conductor Conrad Dunn with an eclectic program including Beethoven's "Egmont Overture", Frescobaldi's "Toccata", Respighi's "Ancient Dances and Airs", and the Bounty Hunter Theme from Video Games Live .

Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded by George S & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, and their annual Gala Dinner and Silent Auction which is generously supported by local businesses, friends, and family.

Retreat!

Evening, All!

Thanks to everyone who came, played, cooked, chaperoned, conducted, put on skits, whack'em'd, cleaned, teeter-tottered, tether-balled, swung, hiked, swept, loaded timpani, snored, laughed, and made my weekend so great!

Please remember that our next rehearsal really 8:30 to 11:00am November 2 -- next week -- and we are back on track for regular Saturday rehearsals. 

The concert is COMING UP on November 23rd, 5-6:30pm. More details coming soon!

There is a sleeping pad from one of the girls's cabins, rolled up, and secured with a bungee cord. I have it at my house; it is gray and blue. It is the kind with a little valve thing in the corner.

There was an abandoned, very wet, cream colored towel in the girls' showers. I have that at my house, as well, and it has been washed and dried (the dryer is beeping right now!).

Retreat Details

Afternoon, all!

Hopefully this email doesn't end up too long, but I want to make sure you have all the information you need to navigate this coming weekend.

Please read the following information and contact me if you have any questions.

Quick Notes:

The Retreat is this weekend, at Camp UTABA (Utah American Baptist Association) in the north end of the Ogden Valley. Click here for a link to the location on Google Maps. Go to their website, www.camputaba.org, and click "Maps" for additional detailed directions, if you like.

All transportation is to be provided by families. If you need someone from your general area to carpool with, please reply to this email and I will do my best to put you in touch with potential carpool buddies.

Please bring a music stand. Whatever you have at home will do; I have hauled our stands in the past, but will not be doing so this year. 

If I emailed you separately this afternoon and asked for your permission slip, PLEASE bring it Friday. I'd hate to turn anyone away. :) If I did not email you about your permission slip, don't feel badly. It just means I already have it! :) If I did not email you, and you are not staying the night, but will be at the retreat part of the time, I still need a permission slip from you. If you don't have one to fill out, reply to this email. I'll send you a pdf copy.

If you participated in past retreats, you will notice that this year the retreat starts later and ends later: 5pm to 5pm.

Accommodations:

My kids tell me this is NOT camping! The heated cabins have dorm-style bunkbeds with mattresses on them. The beds are more comfortable if you bring a blanket/quilt to put under your sleeping bag. 

Restroom & Shower Facilities:

There is a restroom facility in the main lodge, as well as restrooms with showers in a separate building with lovely hot water.

If you need to "go" at night, you will have to walk to the bathrooms (which have showers and even flush toilets Haha), or the lodge – so be prepared with some slip-on shoes!

What to Bring:

Instrument, Music, Music Stand, Pencil, Cushion (for hard cold chair)

Sleeping bag, Pillow, Extra Blanket, Change of clothes

Coat, Shoes/Boots (the weather forecast looks fantastic, so boots are probably not necessary)

Personal care items (toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, soap, towel)

Medicine (as approved on permission slip)

What NOT to Bring:

Electronic entertainment devices, Distractions, Any prohibited substance

Food Allergies, Food Preferences

Morning!

Great rehearsal Saturday; things are starting to come together. Thanks for your hard work.

At the end of rehearsal, we passed out a short survey to find out if we had any food allergy issues. We also asked if there were preferences, or favorite foods, for Dinner, Breakfast, Lunch and Snack.

If you did not get to fill one of these out, especially if you have food allergies and are going to the retreat, please reply to this email with this information.

Morning, All!

Rehearsals are sounding great! Thanks for your commitment and hard work.

Just a couple items of business.

Retreat -- if going to the full retreat doesn't work for you, please come to everything that you can come to. The retreat replaces our rehearsal that weekend, and since we are taking fall break off, it also replaces that rehearsal. Ideally, everyone should come to the whole thing, but if you can't come to the whole thing, come to what you can. The proposed retreat schedule is attached. It is for all players -- woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings.  As you can see on the attached schedule, there are three rehearsals in that 24-hour period. Please do all you can to clear your calendar to participate as fully as possible. Permission forms are due by October 12.

Tuition -- if you did not get a chance to arrange tuition payments at the parent meeting last Saturday, please be sure to take care of it before the late fee is charged!

Lincoln Youth Symphony - Auditions

Evening All!

Thank you for auditioning today, and welcome to Lincoln Youth Symphony. 

We are still looking for more horns, trombones, flutes, and violins, etc. Tell your friends!

Our first rehearsal is this coming Saturday, September 21, 8:30 to 11:00 am, at Promontory School, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry. Please arrive early so we can be set up and prepared to play on time. We will be checking out music, and will have a few more auditions before rehearsal begins.

Our Parent Meeting is after rehearsal the following week, September 28th, 11:00 am-12:00 pm. Plan to turn in tuition or set up payments; attendance at this meeting qualifies you for a small discount. Please plan to attend. 

October 25-26 is our retreat to Camp UTABA in the beautiful Ogden Valley. It takes the place of rehearsal that week. We will need chaperons, so let me know if you are interested. If you haven't signed up to take the ACT that weekend, don't! If you have, there are still parts of the retreat you may be able to participate in. It will be a fun, intensive mini-music-camp and get-to-know-each-other experience; you won't want to miss it.

Please read the Membership & Tuition page on the website, and familiarize yourself with the LYS Calendar. We will be taking Fall Break off -- no rehearsal Oct 19.

Concerto Auditions Application Deadline

Lincoln Youth Symphony Concerto Auditions Application Deadline is coming up quickly.

September 30 is the deadline for applying to get music approved for this year's November 2 concerto auditions. Please contact me (Julie Gardner) if you are interested in auditioning (or have your interested student contact me) at LincolnYouthSymphony@gmail.com, or via telephone @ 435.723.8262.

The concerto audition page on the Lincoln Youth Symphony website has been revised and updated. If you soloed with us last season, you will not be eligible this year, but we'd love it if you would tell your friends about the opportunity.

Lincoln Youth Symphony Auditions

This email is going to everyone who has ever been involved with LYS. If this no longer applies to you, we would appreciate it if you would pass the word on to someone who might be interested.

Lincoln Youth Symphony Auditions are September 14, 2013, 8:30am to noon, at Promontory School, 1051 W 2700 S, Perry. 

There are two online items for you to fill out: A Participant Form, and an online audition appointment sign-up sheet. If you are unable to access the internet forms, there will be paper ones provided at the auditions, or you can request a PDF version by replying to this email. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for warm-up.

If you already filled out the form and signed up for auditions, thank you! We would love it if you would forward this email to a few friends. We encourage carpools!

Links to the forms are also provided on the LYS Audition Information page, where you will find information on what to prepare for auditions. Please contact us with any questions. We want everyone to come well-prepared so they have a positive experience.

Note for Band Students: 

If you are a band student involved with marching competitions, please be advised that you can join as late as November 1 and still play with us for the November 23 concert.  We want you, but we also want you to support your school band program. Band students who do not have competitions are welcome to join at the beginning, of course.

If you do have a marching competition or other conflict on September 14, please scroll to the bottom of the audition sign-up sheet and put your name and instrument under "Sign Below if you Need a Different Date." Be sure to fill out the 2013 LYS Participant Form so we know how to contact you to schedule your audition.

Press Release: Lincoln Youth Symphony Announces A New Era

Conrad Dunn: Lincoln Youth Symphony's New Conductor

Lincoln Youth Symphony, a project of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, is pleased to announce Conrad Dunn of Logan, Utah, as the new Music Director - Conductor of our premier youth orchestra.  

Auditions for the 2013-14 season will take place September 14, 2013, from 8:30am to noon at Promontory School in Perry, Utah. Lincoln Youth Symphony brings together musicians from all over Northern Utah including Ogden, Brigham City, Logan and Tremonton. With three full concerts, a fall retreat, and a performance at Abravanel Hall, the musicians are encouraged to put together car pools and do whatever it takes to participate in regular Saturday Morning Rehearsals for this outstanding opportunity.

Conrad Dunn is a strong believer in the positive effect that music can have in shaping and molding the minds of youth.  His music career started at four years old when he attended a concert by the French violinist Zino Francescatti. That performance and the experience of meeting him backstage inspired him to begin studying the violin.

He began his teaching career as a private string instructor (violin, viola & cello) as well as an assistant in the public schools, at the age of 15. Since then he has continued working in the music education field in various capacities, and he has 40+ years of teaching experience.

Mr Dunn has taught and worked with every age level in the public and private school systems, from supervising string programs on a district level to string clinician on a national level. These experiences in teaching have given him the opportunity to observe, first hand, what is needed in music programs across the country.

Groups such as the Lincoln Youth Symphony give young musicians the chance to participate in a full symphonic setting, broaden their musical knowledge, and provide additional performing experiences. This program is valuable to our youth and our communities.

Concert Press Release LYS April 20, 2013

The Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra have teamed up with the Chinese Program at Foothill Elementary School and Petsfirst! Wellness Center to present a dynamic FREE concert for their 2012-13 Season Finale, April 20, 2013, at 5:00 pm, Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City.

The concert will appeal to youth and adults alike, including Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Amanda Kippen,  performing I'm A Believer, Music for a Found Harmonium (from Napoleon Dynamite), and The Star of County Down.

The two orchestras will also combine to present a medley from Les Miserables conducted by Samuel Runolfson, LYS conductor.

Lincoln Youth Symphony

First graders from the Foothill Elementary Chinese dual enrollment program will present a short program of Chinese songs as a segue into Nathan Brown's performance.

Then Nathan Brown, selected from the LYS concerto competition and featured violinist from Bonneville High School in Riverdale and Lincoln Youth Symphony's Co-Concert Master,  will solo with LYS, performing excerpts from an incredible Chinese piece, The Butterfly Lovers Concerto.

About Nathan Brown:
At the age of 6, Nathan Brown learned the basics of violin playing with Steve Shupe. Three Suzuki books later, he began lessons with Scott Tanner, who sparked his interest in the violin. 

Nathan currently lives in Riverdale Utah, and is a junior at Bonneville High School. He is now under the tutelage of Dr. Shi-Hwa Wang at Weber State University, and Professor Monte Belknap at Brigham Young University.

He placed third in the UMTA Competition in 2012. Nathan has participated in Weber State's ASTA, and Solo & Ensemble, and has received superior ratings. He has been the concert master of Weber School District's Honor Orchestra, the Bonneville Youth Symphony, and now the Lincoln Youth Symphony. This year Nathan was selected to participate in All-State Orchestra which featured the finest youth musicians throughout the state of Utah.

Besides playing the violin, Nathan is an avid playing card collector and Ping Pong player. He enjoys traveling around the world, especially to Hong Kong. He attempted to learn the Guqin, and the Erhu, both Chinese instruments. Nathan also enjoys photography, singing, building Gundam models, and learning card tricks.

The concert will conclude with Lincoln Youth Symphony's performance of the exciting final movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony.

These youth symphonies are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society (LBSS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded by grants from the George S and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, our annual Gala Fundraiser Dinner & Silent Auction,and private donations. LBSS is also incredibly thankful for PetsFirst! Wellness Center's sponsorship of this season finale concert, making it possible to invite the audience free-of-charge.

Details for This Saturday

The concert is this Saturday, April 20, 2013!

We will be rehearsing in the morning at Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City, during our regular extended rehearsal time, 8:30 to 11:30. I will be there early, and anyone willing to help set up is welcome. The last part of the rehearsal will be combined with LYCO again, and we may end early, depending on how things are going! 

I am looking for someone who has a covered trailer/truck that can help me haul 4 timpani, and some other random percussion equipment, that morning. One of the timpani is at my house, and the rest are at Promontory. :) If you'd like extra warm fuzzies, please give me a holler!

The call time for the concert is 4:30pm. The concert starts at 5:00pm, and will run about 1 1/2 hours. We will have some guests from the Chinese Dual Immersion Program at Foothill Elementary to lead in to our performance of the Butterfly Lovers Concerto. You won't want your family to miss it, especially since it has been sponsored by PetsFirst! Wellness Center and there will be no admission fees! It's FREE!

The party information was emailed out yesterday, and also handed out last Saturday! Plan to be there. If you missed the information, it's on the website posted on the blog. It will be great fun!

Party Info...

After this Saturday's 5:00 pm concert at BEMS, we are going to PARTY!

 

LYS and LYCO musicians are cordially invited to celebrate a great year!

 

The party will be after the concert, so will begin at approximately 7pm. 

(You may want to bring a change of clothes to put on after the concert since it will be nice weather and we'll be able to go outside!)

 

Please arrange to be picked up by 9:30pm (a few parents are welcome to stay & help out, but we won't have room for all of them!).

 

We can't have a party without food, so here are your food assignments:

 

Last Name A-I: Cookies/Brownies/Sheetcake/Finger-Dessert/Be Creative!

Last Name J-P: Veggie/Fruit Tray, Simple Finger Foods, Hors d'Oeuvres

Last Name Q-Z: Chips and Chips, or Chips and Dip, or other snacky type food

 

The party is at the Hammer's, 754 W 600 N, Brigham City.

 

Here are directions from the Middle School:

 

Head west to Main Street.  Drive north to 600 North.  Turn west (left) to 754 North.  If you cross rail road tracks, you went too far.  Look for a Moose on the porch.

Saturday, April 13, Extra Rehearsal for LYCO

Dear LYCO Musicians & Parents,

Each year we learn a piece at LYCO that we then combine with LYS to perform in the final concert. This year, we have been learning Les Miserables, and we are getting close to the concert. 

Your youth are needed at the LYS rehearsal THIS SATURDAY, April 13, for an extra rehearsal. We need them to arrive at 10:30 am and be ready to join LYS in the rehearsal by 10:45 am. Rehearsal will conclude at 11:30 am. 

 

This is in addition to their regular Tuesday rehearsals that are already scheduled.

Rehearsal This Saturday

Greetings! 

We are putting together our combined piece this coming Saturday, April 13, with LYCO and a pianist. In order to fit everything in that we need to prepare for the concert the following week, we need to extend the time of our rehearsal ... it will be from 8:30 to 11:30 am this Saturday, April 13.

Great News!

Our final concert coming up on April 20th has been sponsored by PetsFirst  Wellness Center.

This means they have covered the cost of renting the auditorium and admission will be FREE! We are deeply grateful for their support.

The concert will be April 20th, 5pm at Box Elder Middle School.

The press release will be sent soon. I just wanted you to have plenty of notice so you can invite friends and family.  

Also, our end-of-year party will be at Gabby Hammer's house after the concert.

CUTS!

Here are the revised cuts for the Butterfly Lovers Concerto! They are so much easier. Just be sure to really work on the section at 17. It's the hard part because it's FAST!

Start at Rehearsal 1.

Play through the first note at Rehearsal 5.

Cut to Rehearsal 17. Play to the end.

That's it!

Just thought I'd let you know since there were a few missing souls last Saturday!

These are cuts for the Butterfly Lovers' Concerto:

Start piece at rehearsal 1

At Rehearsal 6 Hit first two eighth notes, repeat this measure without rest of the measure then cut to 14 before rehearsal 7

Cut 7 before rehearsal 8 to 4 before rehearsal 12.

Cut 8 before 13 (allegro molto) to 13.

Possible ending at 20 before rehearsal sixteen or cut from this to rehearsal 18

Cut rehearsal 20 to two before rehearsal 21

Cut 22 (after downbeat) to nine after rehearsal 24 (String parts only for first measure no winds/brass)

Good to the end after that. Subject to further cutting....

Party!

We would love to have an after-concert party on April 20th, and I am hoping someone will volunteer their home and backyard. 

This is a combined LYCO/LYS end-of-year party. The youth had a great time last year!

LYS Tomorrow!

Greetings!

Tomorrow is a regular rehearsal day. Here are a few announcements:

We will be having sectionals. Come prepared with questions. There will also be a list of cuts for the Butterfly Lovers Concerto Chinese piece so you know what to work on. 

In the Dvorak New World Symphony, we will only be doing the 4th Movement. Discretion is the better part of valor... It seems wise to choose a smaller portion of the music so we have the chance to work on the details and have a fine performance.

There is a cello bow that was left at Abravanel Hall in February. If you are missing a cello bow, contact me asap to find out how to claim it. I have not had anyone say they are missing a bow, but I just want you to know it's there if you are missing it!

Important Announcement

Greetings, Great People!

In order to maximize our energy, and avoid wasting anyone's time, the rehearsal this Saturday will be run as follows:

Who: Only Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion (such a party!) NO STRINGS (practice at home!) 

Who Else: No section specialists. 

When: 9:00 to 10:45 am (Notice the time change)

Where: Promontory School (Regular Place -- 1051 W 2700 S, Perry)

Why: So many string students will be on tour or playing for ASTA at USU.

Don't forget about the Gala Dinner. If you need tickets for the dinner, please let me know ASAP. Iron Gate Grill needs numbers by Wednesday (tomorrow). If you have silent auction items, shoot me an email so I can be prepared for what is coming; let me know what it is, who donated it, and what the list price is, or the value, so we can intelligently set the minimum bid and have a form prepared.
