Regular Saturday rehearsals from 8:30 to 11:00 am began last Saturday. If you will not be attending a rehearsal, or will be leaving early or coming late, please contact me at 435.723.8262 or respond to this email.

This week, we started slightly late (okay, like almost half and hour!) since we were finishing up auditions. This "late start" will not happen again, so remember that downbeat is 8:30 sharp next week.

 

We had a lot of fun sight-reading a large stack of music. We made a list on the board and conducted a straw poll to see which pieces were wildly popular among the musicians. We could vote more than once, and the final programming decision was made by our conductor, so it's not really a democracy!

 

Here is the list of what we played. Numbers are the number of votes for each piece, and bolded pieces have been chosen for our November concert. We will also be playing Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson (which we didn't sight read)!

Future Rehearsals

 

We will be scheduling rehearsals once a month with potluck treats, so make sure you read your emails each week. I will remind you when to bring treats. Our first rehearsal with treats will be coming up soon!  Stay tuned for more incredibly exciting information!.......

Peach Days Parade & Concert 2008

Greetings!

 

This is a big thank you to those of you playing with us for the Peach Days concert this Saturday, Sept 6th, 2:00 pm in front of the Old Courthouse in Brigham City.

 

This is also a hint that we'd love to have you come listen to our concert if you are not playing in it!  Hint:) Hint:)  We had a very entertaining rehearsal on Tuesday. We played outside, behind ACYI, and entertained the football players and neighbors as we experimented with a sound system.

 

Thanks to Paul Buck for two mikes, speakers and amp. Thanks to Trevor White for two additional mikes!  Thanks to Aaron & Josh Gardner for setting it up and for all the experimenting. We are glad we practiced with the sound system; the concert will go better on Saturday, and it was so fun racing the sunset as we finished our rehearsal!

 

One more Big Deal: We will be in the Peach Days parade. Our entry is a pickup truck with banners on the sides and a big sound system. We will be playing wonderfully upbeat classical music on the speakers. We are in Desperate Need of people to pass out small bright colored flyers to advertise for our concert at the Old Courthouse, and to advertise our auditions. This is a chance for Popsicles (provided by Tamera Terry whose truck we are using) and Fun - and service hours if you need them! 

 

If you are already involved in the Parade, please pass this information on to someone else.  Please email or call me if you or people you know are willing to help. It can be friends, neighbors, little brothers and sisters, or anyone willing to pass out flyers and eat popsicles! 

 

We are #92 in the parade and will be meeting by Pizza Hut in Brigham City at 9:00 am Sept 6th.

Peach Days Rehearsals Start TOMORROW

Greetings!

 

In a perfect world, I would have phoned everyone a month ago, and John Findlay, or conductor, would have phoned again two weeks ago, and I would have phoned again last Saturday. In a perfect world, we would be sending text messages to everyone's phone since that is the way to communicate.

 

But my world is not perfect, so I am emailing again instead.  We are going to have a smashingly fun Peach Days concert this year, and we want YOU and YOUR FRIENDS to come play with us. If you have not emailed me that you are coming, come anyway.

 

Rehearsal Dates: August 19, 21, 26, 28, and Dress Rehearsal September 2.

 

Rehearsal Time: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

 

Rehearsal Location: Adele C Young Intermediate School, 830 S Law Drive, Brigham City

Please Note: There will not be a rehearsal Thursday Sept 4 due to school & Peach Days scheduling conflicts, but we are confident that with good attendance at all 5 rehearsals and just a little practicing at home, we will be prepared for a superb performance on Sept 6.

Upcoming Peach Days Concert

This is Julie Gardner, Managing Director of Lincoln Youth Symphony. If you are receiving this email, you either are or have been associated with the Lincoln Youth Symphony, and we invite you to come play for Brigham City's Peach Days Festival. We know some of you have graduated and are moving on to bigger and better things soon, and we hope you will pass this information on, and encourage your talented friends to come participate. This is a no-audition, no-stress fun concert. Gear up for the new season!  Come Play for Peach Days!

 

This year, LYS will be combining with the Community Orchestra - with our LYS conductor (John Findlay) and their LBCS rehearsal time (Tues and Thurs evenings).

Parade - Opinions and Volunteers Needed!

The Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society is planning to enter the Peach Days parade to spread the word about the Lincoln Youth Symphony, Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, and Lake Bonneville Community Symphony. We need some participation: Either people willing to ride in the back of a truck and play music, or wave, throw candy, or hand out leaflets for the concert... We are not sure if we will perform live music for the parade and We need your feedback in our decision!

Auditions for 2008-2009 Season!

Auditions are scheduled for 8:30 to 11:00 am September 13, 2008 at Adele C Young Intermediate School 830 S Law Drive, Brigham City. All new and returning musicians must audition. Please refer to this link and scroll down for information on what to prepare for auditions: Audition Page.

 

Regular Saturday rehearsals from 8:30 to 11:00 am will begin the following week, Saturday, September 20.

So, let us know about playing for Peach Days, tell us your opinions about the Parade, and plan to audition on September 13.

LYS Final Report 2007-2008

Greetings!

My deepest apologies for sending this about 6 weeks late!  You have been on my mind, and on my "to do" list as well.

Congratulations on your fantastic concert May 1st. Thank you for all your time and effort. Thank you for your support of this wonderful organization!  It was a fantastic year, and next year will be even better. The Beethoven was tight. What more can I say?

Congratulations to John & Misa Findlay on the birth of their Twin Boys!
I think they were born on May 24th... Sorry I don't know more!  When I talked to John it was about MUSIC! How silly of me. Maybe he'll send a birth announcement & I can forward it. (John?)

Music: I received most of the music back after the last concert. The following people will be receiving a bill for their music if they do not turn it in: Cameron C, Tuba; Tim B, Violin I; McKell, Violin I; Nick H, Violin I; Sonee, Violin I; Heather M, Violin II. 

Lesson: It's easier to turn in music if you play in the concert!

I still need to distribute photos to Nathan S & Ed K in Weber Co, and  McKell C, Miranda S, and Tori H in Brigham City (AmyLee, Linda H, Erik N & Rachel A already had them from rehearsal).

Music Catalog
The Eagle Project for cataloging music was highly successful. Thanks to Josh for all your work!

Congratulations to our All-Star Concert Participants
Rachel A, Rhiannon J, Rachael G, Tori H, and Candace C played with the Utah Symphony on May 13th. I have not talked to all of them yet, but the reports I have had have been glowing. I wish they had a program for adults to play with the symphony.

Next year's Abravanel Hall Youth Symphony Festival will be Monday, March 2, 2009. Participating there qualifies LYS to nominate students to play in the All-Star Concert, which will be May 19, 2009.

Peach Days Concert
Peach Days rehearsals will kick off our 2008-2009 season. Like last year, this will be a no-audition-required outdoor pops concert -- a fun way to kick off the new season. We are inviting adults from the community symphony, as well as youth symphony and chamber orchestra students to come play with us. John Findlay will be conducting. This is the rehearsal schedule:
6:30-8:30 pm, ACYI, August 19, 21, 26, 28, September 2, 4. The concert is September 6 in the afternoon.

Parade Publicity
We are also looking for a few willing souls to participate in a flat-bed sort of way in the Peach Days parade to advertise for our concert and gain much-needed publicity for the symphonic society. If you are in a marching band playing in the parade, this will , of course, not be an option for you, but think it over if you are a string player. We are looking into a sound system.

Recruiting
We will be kicking off an aggressive recruiting program when school starts in August with recordings, DVD's, and posters. If you have a friend that may be interested in playing in LYS or LYCO, please forward their email to me. Thank you!

LYS Saturday Report April 26th, 2008

Greetings!

We had an incredibly depressing rehearsal on Saturday!  I hope that all your efforts at State S & E paid off, and that you all had a wonderful day.

With only 11 people at rehearsal this last Saturday, it is imperative that you attend this Thursday's extra rehearsal. It starts at 4:45 at ACYI. It is NOT at the high school. We will have access to the band room after 4:30, so let's be on time and on task!  Cherie can always use help with percussion if your chair and stand is ready for you. We expect the rehearsal to last 1 1/2 hours.

The concert is Friday at Box Elder High School at 7:00 pm. Concert Black. Stay on stage afterwards for a photo.

Pictures from Abravanel Hall: If you ordered a photo from Abravanel Hall, be sure to see me. I have it for you. If you ordered one and you are not playing this concert, contact me for alternate delivery options.

The Eagle Project for cataloging music was highly successful. We are about halfway through. The computer lab is still set up, and Josh will be here Weds evening if anyone wants to come party with him (and catalog music too). We will also have it set up this Saturday, and hope to get a few more willing helpers since there is no rehearsal. Bring a pot luck treat, and hopefully it will be warmer in there this Saturday than it was last Saturday. The address is 2800 S 1200 W, Perry, UT 84302. Google it. You can come and go at any time and work for as long as you are available.

Attendance: If you have been to some but not all rehearsals for this concert, please come to the Thursday rehearsal anyway. If things aren't working out for you, we'll let you off from the concert, but we need you to at least try. This is especially important for Strings.

Well, this was a quickie, but hopefully it said everything we needed to say.

No, you did not miss my email last week. I just didn't send one. Sorry to have been so busy!

Our 8:30 rehearsal experiment is not working very well. This week, April 26th, rehearsal will start at 8:15. Be on time and on task...!  Fabulous.

The last few weeks we have learned that we do not like having the metronome hooked through the sound system (it's very loud... made my face twitch), and we have learned how we truly sound from the digital recording system John brought to rehearsal (well, we certainly improved between the first and second recordings, right?). We have much still to perfect, and can only do it with everyone there. Thanks to everyone who makes LYS a Saturday Morning priority!

Remember: Our LYS Dress Rehearsal will be May 1, 4:45 to 6:15 at ACYI. Fifth Grade Orchestra goes until 4:30, so be there waiting when they finish.

Josh has been getting prepared to blitz the unknown music in the Golden Spike Cabinets as his Eagle Project. There are 8 computers networked in our garage, and the program he has created will support anyone with a web browser. Here's hoping everyone who's not involved in State Solo & Ensemble that day will be able to come help out and get to know each other better!

LYS Saturday Report March 29th, 2008

Greetings!

We voted on a rehearsal time change!  It was intense (well, as intense as it gets at Youth Symphony) and came right down to the wire, and we are grateful to the musician who came in and broke the tie (so I didn't have to!).

The Verdict: for the remainder of the year, we will be starting rehearsal at 8:30 and ending at 11:00. You need to arrive at least 10 minutes early so we can start on time, and if we start late, we will end late! We are also suspending "treats" for now, in an attempt to use our time more efficiently.
