Merry Christmas!

Parties are Great!
Thanks to everyone for a great rehearsal and fun party last Saturday! Thanks to the parent volunteers and Doris for the lovely food presentation. You are all wonderful!

Enjoy Your Holiday!
This seemingly long email started out as a quick reminder that there is no rehearsal this week or next: December 22 or 29. Our next rehearsal is January 5th. (Please read the whole email, though!)

Also, welcome to the email list to all our new players and parents! :)

Listening and practice
Watch and Listen to The Lark Asxending by Vaughan Williams (the rental music is being shipped right now and will be ready for you at the next rehearsal - our soloist will be Mr Dunn)
Listen to the Quantz Flute Concerto (for solo flute (Allison Cook) and strings - we are doing the first movement)
Watch and Listen to the Movie Spectacular - this is a fun video made in Puerto Rico!
And practice. Enjoy your holiday by practicing! You'll feel like a million bucks on January 5th if you've practiced! If you want to share fingerings or tips with your section, send them to me... I can send things out for you. :)

Timely Feedback Needed
We have not officially set a time yet for the Logan High concert. We would like it to be an evening concert, but we can be flexible if there are major conflicts. Please check your schedules TODAY and let me know ASAP if you have any situations we need to be aware of. This is for Saturday, February 23rd, 2019. Last year we somehow scheduled our February concert at the same time as several students' prom! So please check and get back with me!

Thank you!

Recital Night
If you are wanting to perform at Recital Night on January 12th, be sure to contact me.

I'm a little worried I've left someone off the list, so I'm including my current list below. If you told me you wanted to perform and you're not on the list, I've messed up! Please contact me if I forgot you, or if you want to be added. It's going to be a lovely evening!

Some Important details regarding the funeral of North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor

Major Taylor's funeral is scheduled to begin at 1 pm at the Dee Events Center. It is expected that the funeral will last one hour. This is a guess!

When the procession to the North Ogden Cemetery begins, its first leg will follow Harrison Blvd to 12th Street in Ogden. This is possibly right as we have guests arriving for our concert. Since Ogden High School is on the east side of Harrison, people coming off the freeway will possibly be stopped at, say, 30th Street, for 40 minutes... or they might get through right before it closes. The intersections will only be closed as the motorcade is passing each intersection. They will not close the entire road all at once.

Please make your guests aware that when each intersection closes, the North Ogden police chief estimates that the intersection will remain closed for approximately 40 minutes to allow the procession to pass. We recommend that you listen to KSL which will be broadcasting the funeral and covering the proceedings. This might give you a good idea of what is happening, or what to expect as you approach the area.

The funeral may run longer than scheduled. Beginning the procession may take longer than expected. The time for the intersections to be closed cannot be predicted.

Last but most important, encourage your guests to come EARLY, beat the arrival of the procession, and all will be well!

We will do our very best to begin the concert on time, but will also play along with whatever is going on, as needed. If the procession reaches us at Ogden High before our concert, students are welcome to pay their respects by going outside as the hearse passes by. I certainly will take that opportunity if it presents itself!

There may be an adjustment to our program order if necessary.  Thank you all in advance for your patience!

Coming from the South

You will want to listen to the radio to find out the status of the procession, in order to avoid the motorcade. Perhaps it will all have passed by Ogden High by the time you are coming in for the concert.

However, if it is still happening, or there is still a lot of traffic congestion, you'll want to find an alternate route to get to the east side of Harrison from Hwy 89, perhaps by taking Skyline Drive so you pass by the east side of the Dee Events Center. The North Ogden Police Chief recommended using a google maps app to find the best route.

Parking Notes

Parking at Ogden High is not an easy task, even on a normal day.

Most of their parking is on the north side of the building, some on the south side, along the street and you can park in the bus round on the west side in front of the school.

The auditorium is right inside the doors on the south side.  To access the auditorium from the north side, enter through the doors on the north east side of the auditorium.  There will be directional signs.

A Few Other Notes

Volunteers have placed a massive flag in Coldwater Canyon in honor of Mayor Brent Taylor. Here is one of many links to this beautiful story.

Also, Washington Street in North Ogden has also been beautifully decorated in his honor. It is worth seeing.

Music

Please be sure to turn in all folders at this concert. Place your folder in the container marked "NUYCO FOLDERS" in the band room after you finish playing and are putting your instruments away.  We will be replacing the music in your folders over the Thanksgiving Break so you will magically have new music at our next rehearsal on December 1st. But we can't do that without your folder! :)

Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestras In Concert

The Northern Utah Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestras will be presenting their first concert of the 2018-19 season on Saturday, November 17th, 2018, at 3:00 pm in the historic Ogden High School Auditorium. Admission is free of charge thanks to our current season sponsors: Classical Strings, PetsFirst! Wellness CenterBrain Train Utah and Edge Orthodontics.

The all-strings Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nathan West will open the concert with arrangements of the Allegro from Beehoven's Symphony No. 5, Jupiter from Gustav Holst's The Planets, and German Dance by Mozart.

The Youth Symphony conducted by Conrad Dunn will then take the stage. They will be performing Schubert's Rosamunde Overture, Bizet's Carmen Suite No. 2, and Vaughan-Williams' Fantasia on Greensleeves.

The concert will also feature Tyler Morgan performing the Andante from Bottesini's Bass Concerto No. 2. Tyler was selected to perform with the orchestra at the NUYS concerto auditions in August.

Tyler Morgan:
Tyler J. Morgan has been studying with Braun Khan, assistant Professor of Double Bass at Utah State University, and has been playing the bass for 8 years.  He is a Junior at Logan High School, where he is currently serving as the principal bass player for the Logan Philharmonic Orchestra.  This year marks Tyler's second year with the  Northern Utah Youth Symphony, where he is also serving as the principal bass player.

While at Logan High School, Tyler has participated in Regional and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, where he has received superior ratings.  He has performed at Abravanel Hall, Universal Studios, Kingsbury Hall, Caine Concert Hall, and Ellen Eccles Theater.  Tyler has performed with Black Violin and has been coached by Fry Street Quartet, Corbin Johnston, Associate Principal Bassist with the Utah Symphony, and members of the Utah State Symphony and Weber State Symphony.

Tyler is currently participating with Mountain West String Academy Chamber Music Project and performed for the ASTA Master Class Workshop at Juan Diego High School.  Tyler has also played in the pit orchestra for several Musicals, including Cinderella and Singing in The Rain. Tyler currently teaches bass lessons and tutors bass students from Cache Valley.
Tyler has admired this piece for many years and is inspired by Giovanni Bottesini.  Tyler would like to thank all his music teachers and mentors who have helped him along the way.  He would also like to thank his family and friends for their support.
