Abravanel Hall -- Day After Tomorrow!

Greetings!

This is what I wrote last week, but never sent [sheepish grin]:

Abravanel Hall permission slips: all who return them by Saturday, Feb 25th, will receive a slice of fresh homemade bread! That's this coming Saturday. [Bravo to everyone who remembered to bring those permission slips even without the reminder email! -- the bread was good, eh?]

Details for Monday:

Concert Dress is LYS Formal Concert Attire. Click here if you can't remember. Black socks & bow ties, K? ;)

The bus will be at the scheduled locations at the scheduled times. Garrett, Kjersti, Krystal, Liana, and Chauncey all need to bring their permission slips to get on the bus. There will be two chaperones getting on at ACYI, and two more getting on at Riverdale. Thank you for your willingness and availability! You are AWESOME!

Seating: We will be sitting in row 9, putting small cases in row 8, and putting large cases in row 31. Please be sure to keep cases in the seats, not on the floors. The fire people are happy when we follow rules, and we'll certainly want to be able to clear the building if there is an emergency! If you are meeting us there, please meet us in row 9! :)

Always, ALWAYS, be an excellent audience for the other performances. (please!)

6:15 a.m. Load the Bus and leave ACYI
6:30-6:40 a.m. Pick up students in Farr West at the Park & Ride
6:45-6:55 a.m. Pick up students in Riverdale at the Park & Ride on the east side of the freeway north of 5600 S
7:30-7:45 a.m. Arrive Abravanel Hall, Salt Lake City: Please bring a sack lunch and any snacks you will need to get you through the entire morning. There are no nearby eating establishments. You may eat on the bus or in the lobby of Abravanel Hall before we head north again.
8:00 a.m. Granite Jr Youth Symphony and Jordan Youth Symphony performances
9:00 a.m. Warm Up in the Green Room
9:30 a.m. Lincoln Youth Symphony performance!!!
10:00 a.m. Group picture on the grand staircase. Bring $15 for an 8x10 picture. Make checks payable to Patrick Webster.
10:30 a.m. Utah Valley Youth Philharmonia, Timpanogos Chamber Orchestra, Jordan/Canyons Symphony Orchestra performances
12:00 p.m. Load the bus and head for home. We will leave Salt Lake at about 12:15 p.m.
1:00 p.m. Arrive at Riverdale Park & Ride
1:20 p.m. Arrive at Farr West Park & Ride
1:40 p.m. Arrive at ACYI
These times are dependent on traffic and unforeseeable events, so we'll need to be flexible. Parents, please come to pick up your musician a few minutes early just in case!
There is room on the bus for cellos and probably basses… We've seen them fit before!
Each musician is very important to our performance. Since this is not technically a school-sponsored activity, their time off from school will need to be arranged on an individual basis. Please use the note below or as me for a full size version if it helps!

Greetings,

Woo Hoo, the Gala's OVER, and it went wonderfully well tonight. Thanks to everyone who sold tickets, purchased tickets, served food, bid on auction items, cleaned up, entertained, made donations, smiled, laughed, procured donations for the auction... and everything else it takes to put on a fundraiser. I can't wait to hear how it went financially. Again, thank you!

It was a great rehearsal this morning too. If you missed, be sure to turn in your Mendelssohn, Saint-Saens, Liszt, and "From the New World" next week at rehearsal.

Also, we rehearsed Beethoven's Prometheus Overture. It's in your folders, so if you missed today for the ACT or some other reason, please pull it out and give it a look-see. We will be playing it at Abravanel Hall on Feb 27th along with the Tchaikovsky, the Haydn, and the Wagner. I will also pass out the Russian Sailor's Dance next week. We will be adding that to the Abravanel Hall Program as well.

I handed out the permission slips for Abravanel Hall today. Please return the bottom portion indicating your plans (riding bus, where you're getting on, or not riding bus, etc.) by Feb 25. Start talking to your teachers to get time off!

Great Concert! -- Prometheus coming up -- I-know-you're-tired-of-hearing-about-the-Gala

Greetings!

I have looked forward to the concerto concert for so long and it was totally worth it! Thank you for all your hard work & musicality. It was a great evening.

I will be collecting the music for the three concerti (plural of concerto) this Saturday, plus the extra piece (if you have it) 'From the New World Symphony'. Some have it, some don't.

There is one more 'neglected' piece in your folders--the Prometheus Overture. We are performing it at Abravanel Hall on February 27, so pull it out this week & dust it off & go over your notes & rhythms before this Saturday!

Yes, the gala is this week. Saturday. Feb 11. 6 pm. Fun! Tickets may still be available if you contact Mrs Hammer @ 435 723 5880 Monday or Tuesday.

Greetings!

All week, I've been collecting things to tell you, and suddenly it's Thursday Night! Apologies for the delay - especially since I'm not sure I actually remember all the things I've been meaning to tell you.

Concert Details:

Dress Rehearsal: Please arrive at 8:45am. Downbeat will be at 9am, Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City. Rehearsal will last until 11:15am.

Concert: Call Time 4:30pm. Concert begins at 5pm.

Concert Dress:

Male: Black tux or equivalent suit, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.
Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.

Gala Fundraising Dinner & Silent Auction, February 11th, Next Week!

Tickets: Each student has been asked to sell four tickets. These tickets have been handed out at rehearsal. So far, most students have not submitted their ticket money. The deadline for ticket sales is dictated by the needs of the caterer. Ticket money / commitments / final numbers must be submitted this Saturday, Feb 4. The goal: 200 tickets sold. So far: 75 spoken for.

Silent Auction: Each family has been asked to submit an item for the silent auction. If you haven't already submitted an item, please check the online spreadsheet here for what others have already done. We encourage you to find businesses that are willing to make donations, but nice new items, and handmade items are also acceptable!

A HUGE Thank You to all those who have been submitting items.

Abravanel Hall:
We have our schedule!

It will be similar to last year: We are in the morning session, which lasts from 8am to 12noon. We will be going upstairs to warm up at 9am, performing at 9:30am, going for photos at 10am, and returning to the performances of other orchestras at 10:30am

Silent Auction Donations - How's it going?

This is a reminder that there is a spreadsheet available to everyone who has the link to type in who they are planning on talking to about silent auction donations. You can then come back after you've received a response & fill out the rest of the line. I have noticed that the only people who have added information to it are members of the board, but we need everyone's help to make this a successful auction!

Go ahead and click the link and have a look. You may be surprised how easy it is to find donations. You may also be interested to see what we already have - tickets, strings, tuner, quilt, vacuum... take a look!

Also, here is the link to a letter we've successfully used to solicit donations from businesses. It has my name on it as a contact person. Please add yours and let people know you will be personally handling their donation. :) Thanks for that!

Please Please Please start using the spreadsheet... If you don't I will think it doesn't work! That will truly keep me up at night. I'm sure of it!

Remember, we are asking each family to come up with a donation for the auction. Home made or home baked are also allowed. Especially if you're famous for something! I can say that because I bring home made bread every year (maybe I should put that on the spreadsheet!)...

Thanks again for everything! The Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra are NOTHING without musicians and parents!

Press Release: Concerto Night: Lincoln Youth Symphony & Chamber Orchestra

The Lincoln Youth Symphony & the Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra are proud to present A Night of Concertos, February 4, 2012, at 5:00 pm in the Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City. Admission: $3 Adults, $2 Children 11 & under, $2 Seniors, $12 Families.

The Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra is an all-string ensemble conducted by Amanda Kippen. They will open the concert with a nice variety of music including Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, Borodin's From the Steppes of Central Asia, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, and a jazzy piece called Shadows in the House.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony, conducted by Robert Bott, will be featuring Andrew Johnson, Ryan Stocks, and Joshua Musselman, the three winners of this year's concerto auditions, as well as Tchaikovsky's final movement of his Little Russian Symphony, Haydn's Surprise Symphony, and Wagner's Grand March from Tannhauser.

Featured performers:

Andrew Johnson is fifteen years old and a sophomore at Box Elder High. He has been playing the violin for eleven years, studying with Diane Austin. He has played with Lincoln Youth Symphony for 3 years, this year as concert master. He enjoys music as well as tennis and golf. He also participates in choir as well as orchestra and musical productions, and played Potiphar in the recent BEHS production of Joseph. He will be performing the third movement of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.

Ryan Stocks is 17 years old and a junior at Box Elder High School. He has played the cello for 6 years and been a member of LYS/LYCO for 4 years. He studies cello with Ivy Andreason. Aside from playing the cello, he enjoys playing games, snowboarding, listening to music, and hanging out with his friends and family. After graduation, Ryan hopes to attend Weber State University majoring in music. He is very excited to be performing the first movement of the Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor by Saint-Saens.

Joshua Musselman is fifteen years old and lives in North Logan. He currently studies piano with Brandon Lee at Utah State University. Josh loves any activities having to do with music. He sings with Dr. Craig Jessop’s American Festival Chorus, plays in a fiddle band, composes his own music, and participates in ballroom dance. He will be performing the first movement of the Liszt Piano Concerto no. 1.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing excellent musical opportunities for motivated musicians. Gala Coming Up!

Greetings!

Not only do we have a concert coming up on February 4th at 5pm (great rehearsal today, by the way!), we also have the Gala Fundraiser Dinner coming up the following week, Saturday, Feb 11th, 2012, Doors open at 6pm, Dinner at 6:30pm.

Having sent a letter home today about the silent auction, and Gabby's mom having sent a letter home regarding the dinner & ticket sales, I am following up with this email.

The ticket sales contest has begun! The prize structure has slightly changed this year:

We are still doing the overall prize: $25 gift card to the top seller in each orchestra.

BUT NOW there are weekly prizes! Sell any tickets during the week and bring your money & you will get a candy bar at rehearsal PLUS the top weekly seller gets a king sized candy bar.

This year we are also asking every family to come up with at least one silent auction item. To facilitate this, I have set up a spread sheet that can be accessed by anyone with this link & edited by anyone. If you think of a great idea (Oh, the ice cream shop down the street from your house, or your dad's old buddy's brother-in-law's business, for instance), please go to the spreadsheet and type in that you have contacted them. We don't want to have 10 people call the same ice cream shop or that guy's same business! That might be ... slightly ... annoying for them!

I have posted on the blog here the list of where the donations came from last year so you have an idea of who can be contacted, but bring your own ideas to the table! Tami Hunter said the best way to do this is to just get out the phone book and start calling -- of course, as long as you add what you've done to the Silent Auction Collaboration spreadsheet. It updates in real time! Very cool. Technology is amazing!

So, Sell Tickets and Procure Auction Items. If you are afraid of phone calls, there are also a few places you can request donations online -- but you'd have to do it right away. Most have a 4-week lead-time deadline. So far, online, I already did the Megaplex Theaters and sent a request to the Salt Lake Bees. For some reason I can't find the donation request form (was online in the past) for the Jazz... Maybe someone else can be that innovative.

Perhaps your family has a connection, or knows a piano tuner, or massage therapist... those types of services are also auction compatible. We've also auctioned off music lessons before! It's a great venue for that, I'd say! We've had handmade quilts and other handmade items. We've had gift cards from Olive Garden & a bird bath from Costco in the past. Oil changes are also nice - things we need and will buy anyway & may as well donate to the Symphony for!

The Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society sponsors three orchestras - two for the youth and one for adults: The Lincoln Youth Symphony, Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra and Lake Bonneville Community Symphony. Although home base is Brigham City, members of the orchestras come from Brigham City, Ogden, Logan, Tremonton, and surrounding areas. The annual Gala Fundraiser dinner has replaced shrinking grants as a major source of funding for this organization. After we have collected all items for the silent auction, we choose the best one for a raffle item.

Thank you ahead of time for your support! I love the new Megaplex in Ogden. Very nice cinema!

And THANK YOU! for your support of this great organization. I think we will all have a greater appreciation for Tami Hunter this year as we each attempt to do a small fraction of what she did on her own before. LYS Saturday Report!

Greetings!

Thanks for the very productive rehearsal today. We are making progress on our music, and having a nice time with it as well. You are all a delight to spend Saturday mornings with! I just want you to know that -- I would not love coming if it weren't for your smiling faces and hard working attitudes. Keep up the great work!

We look forward to having everyone back next week after a weekend of ACT tests and other things!

If you are a 1st or 2nd violin and you didn't make today's rehearsal, be sure to get fingerings from a friend. Help for the cellos is also on its way. :)

Now, since we are laughing about the cartoon, I have to ask for parental help! We need more people on the Gala committees. You know you should help! Ticket sales (keep track of tickets sold by students - submit numbers for the caterer), Silent Auction (organize & display stuff for sale), Donations Committee (procuring donations), Decorations & Setup, Publicity, Entertainment. So far, if there is someone on these committees, it's only one person! Let's spread the love, get to know each other better, and have a great time into the bargain.

This year's Gala is on February 11th.

Open to college and high school chamber groups of all instruments and voice types

The Student Advisory Committee at the University of Utah School of Music is excited to announce the Second Annual Utah Chamber Music Competition! The competition will be held on Monday & Tuesday, March 5 & 6, 2012 in David P. Gardner Hall at the University of Utah. College and high school chamber groups of all instruments and voice types with three to eight musicians are invited to compete. Five groups will be chosen to win a cash prize, a one-hour coaching session with one of the judges, and a featured performance at the Winners' Concert on Monday, April 9, 2012. We are also very excited to announce that this year we will be offering a scholarship to the University of Utah Chamber Music Workshop to the top winners.

The first annual Utah Wind Symphony Student Concerto Competition

The first annual Utah Wind Symphony Student Concerto Competition

Legacy Music Alliance and the Utah Wind Symphony are pleased to announce the first annual Utah Wind Symphony Student Concerto Competition for junior high, high school, and college musicians. Designed to enrich music education in our state, this event will give three of Utah's top student musicians the opportunity to perform a solo work with the UWS. Selected students who advance to the finals round will participate in a professional audition process, helping to prepare them for professional auditions, job interviews, and other critical moments in their lives. An event like this is only possible through UWS's partnership with Legacy Music Alliance.

Students will be selected through a competitive audition process, and three winners will be selected to perform with the Utah Wind Symphony in concert at the Rose Wagner Theater in Salt Lake City on March 29, 2012. All students who participate will receive written feedback based on their recording. Additionally, students will be competing for the opportunity to win one of the following scholarships generously donated by Legacy Music Alliance:

Three $1,500 scholarships for collegiate division students
Three $1,500 scholarships for high school division students
Two $1,000 scholarships to junior high school division students

Eligibility

All woodwind, brass, and percussion students who currently reside in the state of Utah and are of junior high (grades 6 -9) high school (grades 10 -12), or college age (students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs, no age limit) are eligible to compete.

Application Guidelines

Applicant must provide an unedited DVD video recording with piano accompaniment of the first or last movement of a work for their instrument from the approved repertoire list.
A non-refundable $75 application fee is required. The fee will be waived for members of Legacy Music Alliance's moNET (Music Opportunity Network). Learn more about moNET at www.musicopportunitynetwork.org
Application form, recording, and non-refundable application fee (checks payable to Utah Wind Symphony) must be postmarked by January 3, 2012 and sent together in one packet to: UWS Concerto Competition Committee, 1498 North 125 East, Layton, UT 84041.
Applicants will be notified by January 21, 2012 regarding their selection as a finalist in the live audition.
Live auditions will be held before a selection committee at Summerhays Recital Hall on January 28, 2012. Finalists are required to provide their own accompanist for the audition.
The winners will be announced by January 30, 2012. The decision of the judges is final.

All scholarship winners must be present at the March 29, 2012 concert to receive their scholarship.

Thanks for your hard work this morning, and a huge thank-you to Diane Austin and Amy Braithwaite for working with the violins, Anna Henke for working with the cellos and basses, and Diane Beeton working with woodwinds -- a big thank-you to all of you for helping to make it such a productive rehearsal. You are truly appreciated!

Retreat Handouts

I have attached the Retreat Permission Form and the Retreat Information sheet that I handed out at the end of rehearsal today. Please look them over, and fill out the permission form. I would like to collect all of the Permission forms next Saturday. (I will have cookies for everyone who remembers to bring their permission form!)

Extremely Important: I will be sending individual emails today to each member about their plans are for the retreat. I need to know by this MONDAY if you will be attending all or part of the retreat, and which meals we need to order for you. Remember, we'd love to have you there -- even it it's just for part of it. Camp UTABA needs a headcount!

Thanks for a good rehearsal last week. It's going to be great to have everyone involved in the play back at rehearsal again.

Concerto Auditions

A big congratulations to all the students who auditioned for the Concerto Night concert. It takes a long time and a lot of work - and diligent practice - to prepare a concerto. I'm sure you see that as you watch Krystell prepare for her performance! She is a great example to all of us. (If this is something you are interested in doing in the future, please talk with Rob or me and let's choose a piece together that will work well for the orchestra -- before you spend a year learning it!)

Our concerto night performers will be

Joshua Musselman, from Logan, playing the first movement of Piano Concerto No 1 by Liszt

Ryan Stocks, from Brigham City, playing the first movement of Cello Concerto No 1 by Saint-Saens

Andrew Johnson, from Perry, playing the third movement of the Violin Concerto by Mendelssohn

These are three of the pieces we will be diligently learning for our next concert! I'm excited because they are all FULL orchestra pieces -- not that we don't love the Accolay, but it's only scored for Strings! :)

Volunteers needed - if you have a sense that either of these might be something you can help with, please step forward!

I no longer have a van to haul percussion, and I need someone with a large enough vehicle to fit a few timpani & other various pieces of equipment. I can NO LONGER do this myself, so I need a volunteer to meet me at ACYI on Saturday, Nov 12, at 7:15 am. We load percussion, haul it to the Middle School, and leave it there for the day. Preferably, the same volunteer would then haul the percussion equipment back to ACYI after the concert (at about 6pm). It's a good deed to help a stranded symphony manager! Let me know if you'd like to help! :)

Still looking for someone to video the concert -- if you don't have a good camera, I have one that works really well and records the sound very nicely. Let's get together on it, K?

November 5 Rehearsal

This Saturday, November 5, is our last rehearsal before we go to the auditorium for the dress rehearsal. We have a lot of work to do, and Rob is going to be out of town for a wedding. Actually, he loves us so much that he tried to get out of going, but in the end he really needs to be in Boise, so he has created an elaborate schedule for us. We will be having sectionals (split into smaller groups) for the first hour, and then running through pieces during the second hour + 15 minutes. Please be on time, and come ready to work! :)

November 12 Rehearsal

This is the one with the big change, and it only involves the strings: The strings will be starting rehearsal on Saturday November 12 at the Middle School Auditorium (18 S 500 E, Brigham) at 8:00 am. Yes, you read that right. Woodwinds & Brass will join us at 9:00 am, the regular time. Rehearsal will be over by 11:00 or 11:15 am and LYCO will begin their rehearsal as soon as we are done. If you think you're going to die, bring a snack! :)

November 12 Concert

Remember we have changed our concert time to 4:30pm. Please arrive at 4:00pm dressed for the concert. We perform after LYCO. I have posted the press release (with the non-silly photos) on the website. Click here to read it. Hopefully the papers will publish it!

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students, and $12 for all family under one roof.

Why is there is an admission charge to the concert? (I wish it were free!) If someone wants to take the banner of finding sponsors for our concerts, we would be able to do away with admission, but at this point, it covers the cost of the hall and also supplements some operating expenses. Please come talk to me or a member of the board if you would like to carry this banner!

Concert Dress -- a reminder that you need to get your wardrobe ready.

Extra Extra: Don't find yourself frantically searching thrift stores for black clothing the day of the concert!

Male: Black tux or equivalent suit (*this includes black slacks and a black jacket), white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks, black shoes.

Female: Black dress, formal trouser suit, or blouse & skirt, midriff covered, conservative neckline, skirts & dresses at least tea-length, slits no higher than knee, black stockings, black shoes, accessories & trim in black.

Press Release for Lincoln Youth Symphony and Chamber Orchestra Concert November 12

The Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra are pleased to announce the opening of their 2011-2012 season. You are cordially invited to attend their first concert, "Symphonic Sampler", November 12, 2011, at 4:30 pm, at the Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City. This will be an eclectic concert, featuring a wide variety of music sure to please all tastes. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children 11 & under, or $12 for under-one-roof families.

Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra

The Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, the LYS training orchestra for strings, will begin the program. LYCO is conducted by Amanda Kippen, currently a senior at Weber State University in Music Education, and the program will include Christmas favorites such as the Overture from Handel's Messiah, and Sleigh Bells Jingling, as well as Satie's Gymnopedie No 1, and Critter Crawl.

Lincoln Youth Symphony

The Lincoln Youth Symphony, conducted by Robert Bott, will feature Krystell Taylor, violinist, performing the first movement of the Accolay violin concerto. Krystell was one of the winners of the LYS Concerto Competition last year, but broke her arm before she was able to perform in last season's concerto concert. The Lincoln Youth Symphony will also perform a medley from Sound of Music, Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, A Bach Christmas, and the Russian Sailor's Dance by Gliere.

Krystell Taylor

Krystell Taylor is 15 years old, and attends Wahlquist Jr. High School in Farr West, Utah. She lives in Plain City, and is the oldest of four children. Krystell started playing the violin when she was three, and took lessons from her mom until she was 11. She then started lessons with Diane Austin, and has taken from Diane for the last three and a half years. Krystell loves music, and is often found singing while working on various projects. She has participated in different ward and school choirs, orchestras, and is currently principle over the second violins in the Lincoln Youth Symphony. She has started teaching some of her own private students, and wants to go on to major in music in college.

LYS and LYCO include students who are participating in their school programs but are looking for more music in their junior high and high school experiences. Students come from as far north as Tremonton, as far east as Logan, as far west as Plain City, and as far south as Riverdale. The orchestras are the main project of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by grants from the George S & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, the Utah Division of Arts & Museums with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts, and their annual Gala Fundraiser -- supported by many local businesses, parents, grandparents, and Paradise Furniture in Willard, Utah. Concert Time Change & Call for a Volunteer to do Recordings

Greetings!

This is a between-rehearsal quickie email.

We have decided to change the November 12 concert time to 4:30pm. LYCO will play first, and LYS will start around 5pm. The location will still be Box Elder Middle School auditorium. The concert will be over by 5:45 at the latest. This will hopefully make it easier for all students involved in the BEHS production of Joseph, as well as the WHS production (and matinee!) of ... Joseph! What a great play. I'm sure it will be wonderful in both venues!
A big thank you to Lisa Kent who has provided video and audio recordings of our concerts for more than a decade. She is now retiring from this, and we would love to see someone else who has a nice video/sound recorder step up and facilitate sharing a good quality recording. She always took orders and collected money before each concert, and then distributed the recordings when she put them together. Please let me know if this is something you might be interested in helping with. :)

Here's hoping everyone who is out of town is having a safe trip. Here's also hoping that everyone taking the ACT does well! And here's hoping for a great rehearsal for all of us who don't have anything exciting going on!

Such a lovely day, and such a nice rehearsal! We are blessed to have the gift of music and be able to share it.

I'm so glad that Rob made it to rehearsal today. He has been sick and wasn't sure he would be there. Deep gratitude (especially on my part) that he was!

LYS: Looking Forward to Rehearsal Tomorrow

For those of you who are new, I send a weekly email. Generally it arrives much earlier in the week!

This Saturday

Regular Rehearsal, 9-11:15. Please arrive early and help set up. Thanks a TON for everyone who helped set up last week. Rob is looking forward to being at rehearsal tomorrow! It sounds like he had a great week in Boulder at his conducting workshop.

Tomorrow is a great rehearsal to bring friends (especially if they play a missing instrument!). They are welcome to play along, and then decide if they want to join us for the year.

Thanks to everyone for their efforts last week. It was a good rehearsal, and I appreciated Rob even more by the time I was done conducting!

Discount for Late-Comers

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the parent meeting last Saturday. With regard to the discount, our new policy for everyone who joins after the parent meeting: If you take care of your tuition within one week of joining (this includes payment in full or making arrangements), you will qualify for the discount. So your friends can join late and still qualify for the discount.

If you haven't filled out and turned in a calendar sheet with your conflicts on it, please bring it tomorrow. If you turned one in at the parent meeting, you are covered!

Upcoming November 18-19 Retreat FAQ

If going on an overnight activity is not my thing, can I skip the retreat?

You are welcome to not spend the night, but the retreat is taking the place of rehearsals for that weekend, so it is imperative that you participate in the daytime part of the retreat - there will be rehearsals on Friday evening as well as a workshop/sectional on Saturday morning and another rehearsal on Saturday as well. It is our first rehearsal after our concert, so we will be learning new music and it's going to be fun! Please make arrangements to be there for the Friday evening and Saturday morning/early afternoon activities even if you do not plan to spend the night.

How do we get there?

Camp UTABA is relatively close-by (for a camp location). Here is a link to their map http://camputaba.org/drive.htm. Carpooling is recommended. If you need tips on people to carpool with, please contact me.

I might have a swim meet or something that weekend. Can I come to part of the retreat?

YES! Please come to as much of the retreat as possible, but if you have an unavoidable conflict, we will work with you! :)

I hope you're all off to a great start of a new season with your orchestras. I wanted to let you know about a few things from the education department of Utah Symphony. Please share this with your student musicians and their parents.

Utah Symphony Youth Guild: The Utah Symphony Youth Guild is a great resource for families who love music. I've attached the 2011-12 application and a document that explains the many education and service opportunities. And one of the best kept secrets is the ticket vouchers that allow members to attend performances for just $5 (students) and $10 (parents)!

Utah Symphony Recommends: At the suggestion of one of your colleagues (Paul Watson) we have created a poster to help students locate the concerts in our season that are most important for particular instruments. I've attached a copy of it here (use Adobe Reader to open it) but it is also available on our website at http://usuoeducation.org/for-students/education-events-for-individual-students .

Youth Orchestra Festival: I wanted to be sure that everyone had the date of this season's Youth Orchestra Festival on your calendars. It will be Monday, February 27, 2012. You'll be hearing from Jim Thompson and me about the details in a few months.

All-Star Evening: The All-Star Evening concert will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Student rehearsals and mentoring sessions are not yet scheduled, but may take place between April 23 and May 11. The rehearsal with the Utah Symphony will be Saturday, May 12 at 11 am.

Retreat

Our retreat will be November 18-19, 2011 from 4pm on Friday to 2pm on Saturday. All LYS musicians are expected to participate. It will take the place of that week’s regular rehearsal, and it will be a time for musicians to get to know each other, play games, have a couple intense rehearsals, and, most importantly, to have fun. Mini-music-camp! We are confident it will set the tone for a great year.

Our retreat will be at Camp UTABA in the north part of the Ogden Valley. It is near enough to carpool. See www.camputaba.org for a virtual tour and driving directions.

The cost of $40 covers the overnight stay, dinner, breakfast and lunch.

Retreat:

We need some help hauling music stands & the podium, as well as chaperons for the overnight stay, two adults for each cabin we use. Please contact me to volunteer.

Auditions

If auditioning makes you really nervous but you are interested in joining LYS, please contact us. We no longer require a 2-3 minute solo – just 16-20 measures. See below. Please choose a selection that makes musical sense to you!

Auditions will be held Saturday, Sept 17, 9:00-11:15 a.m. (or however long it takes) at ACYI, 830 Law Dr, Brigham City.

You might want an appointment. But you don’t have to have one. All walk-ins will be worked in around people with appointments! This should minimize your waiting time. Please contact Julie at LincolnYouth Symphony@gmail.com or 435.723.8262 for an appointment.

Auditions are required for new and returning musicians.

All musicians: 16-20 measures of a prepared solo. You will also be asked to sight-read.

Additionally:

Strings: A 3-octave major scale and a 2-octave melodic minor scale of your choice.

Woodwinds: A 2-to-3-octave chromatic scale, and a 2-to-3-octave major or minor scale.

Brass: Two 1-to-2-octave major or minor scales.

Percussion: Snare rudiments, a major & a minor 1-octave scale on bells.

Auditions:

Auditions can be scary, but never fear! We are small and love new people!

Appointments are optional. Walk-ins will have to be worked in around people with appointments, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Concerto Auditions:

Last year Sarah Pehrson, Krystell Taylor, and Hector Guadarrama were selected to perform works by Bruch, Accolay and Vanhal with the orchestra. (Actually, Krystell didn’t perform – she broke her arm instead – but she’ll be performing her piece in our November concert). This year, it could be you or your friend! Our concerto night will be February 4^th, 2012.

Auditions are open to members of the orchestra for no additional fee. If you have an awesome friend who wants to audition, the charge is $20. Auditions will be October 29, 2011, after regular rehearsal at 11:15 am. Your piece must be pre-approved for availability and playability in September – so contact Julie or Robert with your information.

Concerto Auditions

This is for people who are already working on a concerto (a solo piece with orchestral accompaniment).

I know, sounds scary to some, but it sounds exhilarating and exciting and like an incredible opportunity to others.

If it sounds cool to you, please come talk to me. We have to approve your piece!

Mandatory Parents’ Meeting

The mandatory parents’ meeting for both LYS and LYCO is September 24, 2011, 11:30–12:15 pm, ACYI Choir Room.

This will include information on the Symphonic Society, the retreat, rehearsal attendance and etiquette, wardrobe guidelines, and recruiting for volunteer opportunities like a snap-shot taker/photographer. There will also be a question / answer session. We look forward to getting to know you! We’ll see you there!

Each year we share the stage with 14 other youth symphonies at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City. Save the Date! This year’s youth symphony festival will be on Monday, February 27, 2012. Our “Utah Symphony All-Stars”

When Lincoln Youth Symphony participates in the Youth Symphony Festival at Abravanel Hall each year, we qualify to send some of our members to play side-by-side with professionals as part of the Utah Symphony for their All-Star Evening.

This coming year, the concert will be on Tues, May 15, 2012.

Messiah

Each year the Lake Bonneville Community Symphony performs a Messiah Sing-along, and they always invite LYS to participate. The performance will be December 8 or 9; stay tuned for information on rehearsals.

Messiah Sing-along: This is not part of LYS, but completely optional!

Buy Grocery Store Certificates

Naomi Miles is our contact person on the board for grocery certificates. If you would like to be included on her grocery certificate list to regularly purchase grocery certificates, please contact her at 435.723.7617.

Money raised can be specified for the general fund, for LYS, LYCO, or the Community Symphony. The certificates work at any Smith’s, including the pharmacy and gas pump, or at either the Brigham City or Tremonton Kent’s. It is an ongoing fundraiser.

Buy certificates and spend them like cash; our organization makes 5% cash back. This is a great way to budget for groceries!

Robert Bott

In addition to being LYS conductor, Robert Bott currently serves as Co-Music Director of the Celebration Chamber Orchestra. Robert has guest conducted the Salt Lake Symphony, the Utah Composer’s Forum, the Summer Choral Institute, and has participated in conducting workshops around the country. He has also been privileged to work with living composers and to conduct premieres of several contemporary works, including his own compositions. His conducting teachers include Robert Baldwin, David Cho, Brady Allred, Kenneth Kiesler, Andrew George, and David Schiff.

A native of Salt Lake City, Robert holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in Music Composition, and a Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting. His interests in music are extremely varied; besides conducting and composition, Robert has studied the saxophone, clarinet, and voice. As a performer, he has had the privilege of playing in numerous instrumental ensembles, singing in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, and touring England and France with the University of Utah Singers, winners of the European Grand Prix International Choir Competition in 2006. (Last Fall they toured with this choir again and won another competition. -Julie) Robert and his wife Tiffany (who makes the best brownies ever!) live in Layton, and mostly they dote on their new baby Tristan, but in their spare time they enjoy literature, sports, video games, and nature.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony (Brigham City) is pleased to announce our second season under the able tutelage of Robert Bott. The Lincoln Youth Symphony rehearses on Saturdays from 9-11:15 am at Adele C Young Intermediate School, 830 Law Drive, Brigham City. High school age musicians (grades 9-12) who have played orchestral instruments at least 3 years including violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute/piccolo, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion/timpani are invited to audition for this growing and dynamic full symphony orchestra. The open auditions will be September 17th from 9:00 to 11:15 am at ACYI. Please contact LincolnYouthSymphony@gmail.com for an appointment. Walk-in auditions will be accepted as time allows. String players not yet ready for the rigors of Lincoln Youth Symphony may want to audition for the Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra conducted by Charles Thompson. The Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra rehearses on Tuesdays from 3:30-5 pm, also at Adele C Young Intermediate School, 830 Law Drive, Brigham City. Interested students who have played violin, viola, cello or string bass at least 2 years are invited to audition for this fun and unique string orchestra. I'm still going to send out the best photos from the April 16 concert. They happen to be on my camera, so I really will do it. I promise!

In the meantime, this is a great chance to support a fantastic violinist! I hope you remember Moriah Wilhelm, the violinist who came to our retreat with the flutist, Christina Taylor. Moriah has sent an invitation to a special recital. Hearing her play is always a special treat, and I have put it on my calendar to be sure to attend!

Hi Julie,

I have been accepted to study and perform at The Green Lake Summer Music Festival (www.greenlakefestival.org) this summer. Based at Wisconsin's Ripon College, the festival offers instruction from performing artists including the Amelia Piano Trio and the violin virtuoso Samantha George. The camp also includes performance opportunities with some of the most talented young musicians in the nation. This two-week festival, July 1st through the 15th, hosts gifted high school and college age violinists, violists, cellists, and pianists in a dynamic, rigorous solo and chamber music experience.

This music camp, as others, requires an investment in tuition, airfare, and other supplies. I have received a partial tuition scholarship to attend, and I am exploring additional opportunities to make this dream a reality. I will be performing on May 13, 2011 in a Benefit Recital to help raise the remaining funds by inviting donations. I would love to have you come and enjoy this exciting event featuring music of Camille Saint-Saens, Maurice Ravel, Dmitri Shostakovitch, and Claude Debussy in a combination of both solo and chamber music. Two questions... And Thanks for a Great Year!

Greetings!

I just had to write and thank you for a great year! The concert last night was so fun, and it was really cool to squeeze everyone on stage for that final number. I hope you felt as if you were a part of something bigger than yourself; I know I did! I love being a thread in the tapestry of an orchestra. We've done some new things this year: a new conductor and our first ever retreat. We continue to move onward and upward!

A huge thank you to all your incredibly supportive parents!

Thanks to all the musicians who worked so hard! We will miss the seniors who have given so much to this orchestra. We look forward to seeing new leadership next season, and to hearing how everyone does as they move toward new horizons.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra will present their season finale concert on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 5:00 pm at Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City. Admission as follows: Adults $3; Children 11 & Under $2; Seniors $2; Families $12.

Come prepared to enjoy an evening of classical music designed with variety in mind. In addition to preparing for performances,the youth in these audition-only orchestras have enjoyed a fun year getting to know each other. The Lincoln Youth Symphony also enjoyed a weekend retreat to Camp UTABA last October, and their annual performance at Abravanel Hall for the Youth Symphony Festival in February.

The Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra (LYCO), a strings-only orchestra conducted by Chuck Thompson of Clinton, will present Scherzo from Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Themes from the New World Symphony by Dvorak, Anitra's Dance by Grieg, an arrangement of Secrets by One Republic, and Spring by Vivaldi.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony (LYS), a full orchestra conducted by Robert Bott, will present The Sleeping Beauty Waltz from the Ballet by Tchaikovsky, Brahm's Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens.

The two orchestras will combine under the direction of Robert Bott to present the Third Movement of the Antar Symphony by Rimsky-Korsakov.

These orchestras are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society (LBSS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by the George S & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, the Utah Arts Council, Walmart Community Giving, and ATK matching funds donations. The LBSS is dedicated to bringing youth and adult musicians together to perform beautiful music. I am really excited about our upcoming concert. Please note that it is Next Week, April 16th, at 5pm. This earlier concert time has eliminated a lot of potential conflicts this year, so we opted to continue the pattern - and found we had averted another conflict just after we made the decision.

The performance will be at the Garland LDS Tabernacle on May 6th. The rehearsals are on Thursday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30, beginning March 31 at ACYI. The dress rehearsal is on May 5 in Garland. If you are interested in playing in this concert, please let me know and I will pass your info on to the proper person.

Oh, yet another thing:

We have decided to do POTLUCK TREATS at rehearsal next week, March 12. So bring a treat for break, and we'll share! Fun!

Abravanel Hall Permission Slips

Greetings!

Our trip to Abravanel Hall is next week! Information sheets including permission slips and school excuse forms were handed out today. There were several people who did not receive one today. They will get them in the mail on Wednesday (as there is no mail on Monday, they will not go out until Tuesday). The permission form at the bottom of the paper must be returned at rehearsal on Saturday Feb 26. All who bring them will receive a slice of homemade bread! :) From Me!

Here is the information about schedule from the top part of the letter:

Our performance at Abravanel Hall is February 28, 2011. Our schedule is as follows (times subject to change):

· 6:15 a.m. Load the Bus and leave ACYI

· 6:30-6:40 a.m. Pick up students in Farr West at the Park & Ride

· 6:45-6:55 a.m. Pick up students in Riverdale at the Park & Ride on the east side of the freeway north of 5600 S

· 7:30-7:45 a.m. Arrive Abravanel Hall, Salt Lake City: Please bring a sack lunch and any snacks you will need to get you through the entire morning. There are no nearby eating establishments. You may eat on the bus or outside before we leave. We are not allowed to eat in Abravanel Hall, and you will not be allowed to leave & find food.

· 8:00 a.m. Granite Jr Youth Symphony and Jordan Youth Symphony performances

· 9:00 a.m. Warm Up in the Green Room

· 9:30 a.m. Lincoln Youth Symphony performance!!!

· 10:00 a.m. Group picture on the grand staircase. Bring $15 for an 8x10 picture [this slightly higher photo cost now includes shipping to each musician's home instead of sending the photos to me... since they tend to arrive after our last concert, this makes things less stressful for me! Yay]. Make checks payable to Patrick Webster.

· 10:30 a.m. Utah Valley Youth Philharmonia, Granite Youth Senior Symphony, Jordan/Canyons Symphony Orchestra performances

· 12:00 p.m. Load the bus and head for home. We will leave Salt Lake at about 12:15 p.m.

· 1:00 p.m. Arrive at Riverdale Park & Ride.

· 1:20 p.m. Arrive at Farr West Park & Ride

· 1:40 p.m. Arrive at ACYI

Ø These times are dependent on traffic and unforeseeable events, so we'll need to be flexible. Parents, please come to pick up your musician a few minutes early just in case!

Ø There is room on the bus for cellos and probably basses… We've seen them fit before!

Ø Each musician is very important to our performance. Since this is not technically a school-sponsored activity, their time off from school will need to be arranged on an individual basis.

Our Fundraiser went very well last night!

Many thanks are in order, including Tami Hunter for her indefatigable work to seek out silent auction items, and all those who sold tickets or purchased tickets. Thank you sooo much for your support!

Paradise Furniture's generous donation of the recliner is deeply appreciated, as well as all the other businesses and individuals.

I'm a little loopy right now, so I'm not going to even try listing anyone else [Tiffany Schultz] who deserves deep gratitude [Many Local Businesses], but we brought in more than $2000, similar to what we get from some grants - which is the goal - to make up for a lost grant. Greetings!

I was so pleased with last Saturday's rehearsal. It really felt like we made good use of our time, and the Schubert is sounding great! We will be handing out at least one more piece (for the April 16 final concert) this Saturday, but we will still focus almost exclusively on the Schubert for Abravanel Hall for the next two rehearsals. I will send a separate email with the schedule and other information for Abravanel Hall.

Thanks to all of last Saturday's sectional specialists. You all did a fantastic job! Having "new blood" around really energized me. I hope it did the same for you.

This Friday is the Gala, 6pm, Brigham City Senior/Community Center, 24 N 300 W, Brigham City. The silent auction and door prizes will be awesome, and don't forget to buy raffle tickets. Paradise Furniture has donated a recliner - the winner of the raffle gets a certificate and goes to the store to choose their own color for the brand new chair (it will not be the floor model). Tickets for the raffle will be $1 or 6 for $5. Silent auction items are plentiful. It's going to be awesome, but you need to bring your neighbors and friends so that the fundraiser is successful. There's nothing like trying to squeeze blood from a turnip!

I will be making phone calls tonight to everyone who hasn't notified me about tickets. We need numbers for the Caterer by Wednesday.

Utah Symphony Classical Countdown Student Voting

Youth Orchestra Directors,

Utah Symphony would like to invite your student musicians to participate in the voting to select the pieces to be played on our Classical Countdown concert on April 26, 2011. You can help by forwarding this email to your youth orchestra, bringing their attention to the invitation in the box below. Thanks for your help in getting the word out.

We need your help! On Tuesday, April 26, the Utah Symphony will present a Classical Countdown concert on our Family Series. Big Budah from Fox 13 will host the concert, leading us through the thrilling countdown of pieces voted on by young musicians. That's where you come in.

We invite you to look through the list and vote for up to 10 pieces. Voting closes at 5 pm on February 28.

Then plan to join us for the concert on April 26. You'll want to see how your choices stack up to your young musical colleagues. Student tickets are only $8

Thanks for a great concert! I had many positive comments. Thanks to Hector and Sarah for all their incredibly hard work preparing to perform, and thanks to our extra helpers as well, including the really cool string players who played percussion for Aladdin!

Update: Last week, I contacted the dispatch for our bus to Abravanel Hall, but I'm still waiting to hear back. I will let you know the official schedule as soon as I know. Just plan to be gone from about 6:30am to 1pm on February 28th. That should about cover it! If you have a schedule conflict, you can have a parent drive you down, or pick you up early. We can discuss this at length as soon as I have the official schedule.

Press Release for Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society Fundraiser Feb 18

The Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society runs local projects supporting youth and adult classical musicians in Brigham City, Tremonton, Ogden, and surrounding communities. Lincoln Youth Symphony and Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Lake Bonneville Community Symphony, are projects of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society.

In addition to funding from the George S & Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation and the Utah Arts Council, the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society relies on their annual Gala Fundraiser Dinner and Silent Auction as an enjoyable way to spotlight local support.

So far this year, they would like to thank the following businesses that have graciously donated to the effort: Paradise Furniture, Honeyville Grain, Hair Therapee, Utah Jazz, Attitudes Salon, Footzoning from Misa Findlay, Piano Tuning from John Findlay, Hand-Carved Walking Stick from Bruce Howard, Alpine Gardens, Canyon View Animal Health Center, Classical Strings, Idle Isle Candy, Peach City, Holmes Clothing, Cover Up, Murphy's Appliance, Sonic, Hunan Village, Domino's, Drewes Floral, Premium Meat Company, Idle Isle Cafe, R & K Marble, The Ark.

The organization is still seeking additional donations for their silent auction, as well as cash donations to support this worthy cause. It is imperative that this year's fundraiser be highly successful to keep the programs serving the youth of this and surrounding communities. Grant money is never a guarantee, and awards have been smaller each year for several years.

This event will be Friday, February 18, 2011, at 6:00 pm at the Brigham City Senior/Community Center, 24 N 300 W. Tickets for the roast beef dinner are currently on sale at $15 per plate. The evening includes a raffle for the Paradise Furniture recliner, a silent auction, and live entertainment. Concert Tomorrow

Here's the low-down for tomorrow, February 5, 2011:

Don't forget that rehearsal is at Box Elder Middle School, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City, at 9am sharp. We may end at 11am, but we reserve the right to go until 11:15. Hee Hee.

Don't forget to bring money for ticket sales to the Gala Fundraiser. I will have tickets for you!

Don't forget that the concert is at 5pm at Box Elder Middle School. It will last 30-40 minutes. Admission: $3 adults, $2 seniors, $2 children 11 & under, $12 Families under one roof.

Don't forget to bring your instrument. Ha Ha.

Don't forget to turn in all music except the Schubert after the concert. There will be a regular rehearsal every Saturday this month, even President's Day weekend.

Don't forget we will be playing the entire Schubert at Abravanel Hall on Feb 28, so start polishing that first movement again!

Abravanel Hall Schedule

Extra! Extra!

The information has arrived for our February 28 Abravanel Hall trip. I do not have the bus schedule yet, but I will soon. We are in the morning group and our performance time is 9:30 am. We will be listening to two orchestras (8:00 and 8:30), going upstairs at 9:00, performing from 9:30 to 10:00, then getting pictures. We then listen to groups at 10:30, 11:00 and 11:30.

Please plan to stay for the entire session (from 8am to noon) as it is very valuable for us to observe others' performances in addition to our experience performing.

I will not be there on Saturday, but there will be a mom there with tickets to trade for checks, so please bring in your Gala ticket money! Let's see who is farthest ahead!

Have a great weekend, and I'll see you at Box Elder Middle School for rehearsal on February 5th! Don't forget, the concert is at 5pm, not 7pm. (Rehearsal this Saturday, Jan 29, is still at ACYI -- just trying to avoid confusion!)

Greetings!

Here is the run-down for today:

I handed out Gala ticket sales packets to everyone at rehearsal. If you weren't there today, I have uploaded the letters, ticket tracking form, & receipts to the website. Click here for the right page. This is so you can get started today, even without the handout! Notice that the page of receipts is also attached, which means if you use all four receipts that I handed out today, you can print more! Save the date: the Gala is 6pm, February 18, 2011, at the Brigham City Community/Senior Center, 24 N 300 W.

Please contact me if you have any items for the Silent Auction. The solicitation letter (for businesses) is also uploaded to the website. My dear husband just spent some time at Paradise Furniture, and there will be a recliner for the raffle! (Raffle tickets will be for sale at the door. They will be $1, or 6 for $5.)

Our Concert is 2 weeks from Today! I really need everyone to spend time on their music at home. Even if you think you'll never be able to play it, practicing helps things go better. Always. I'm living proof!

Concert time: The concert time has officially been changed to 5pm on February 5th, 2011. It is at the Box Elder Middle School Auditorium, 18 S 500 E, Brigham City. Admission is Adults $3, Children (11 & Under) $2, Seniors $2, Families (from one household) $12.

I still don't have the schedule from the organizers for Abravanel Hall. Again, set aside Feb 28th. Details coming soon!

I will not be at rehearsal next week. My uncle passed away this week and we are going to California for the memorial service. Tiffany will be working with the winds on the Fughetta. I know you can do it!

We will also include the strings (who are not playing percussion) in the Aladdin piece!

Press Release for Lincoln Youth Symphony Concerto Night Feb 5

Violinist Sarah Pehrson of Plain City and violist Hector Guadarrama of Honeyville will be the featured soloists in the Lincoln Youth Symphony's Concerto Night conducted by Robert Bott. The concert will be February 5, 2011, at 5:00 pm in the Box Elder Middle School auditorium, 18 South 500 East, Brigham City. Admission: Adults $3, Children (11 & under) $2, Seniors $2, and Families $12.

This annual concert features winners of the Lincoln Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. There were three winners this year. The third winner is Krystell Taylor from Plain City, but she is currently recovering from a broken arm and will be featured instead on our April 16 concert.

Sarah Pehrson will be performing Max Bruch's Concerto in G Minor, first movement (Vorspiel). She has played violin for 7 ½ years, studying privately for 5 ½. For the last year and a half she has studied with Peggy Wheelwright. She was in the 2009 All-State Orchestra and recently performed with the 2010 All-State Orchestra. Sarah has a love of all music; she enjoys playing in pit orchestras and loves to sing. She recently won her school's Sterling Scholar for music. Sarah is incredibly dependable and an extremely hard worker with a 4.0 GPA. She is a senior at Fremont High School. Sarah has been the concert master of the Lincoln Youth Symphony for two years, and is a past concert master of the Lincoln Youth Chamber Orchestra.

Hector Guadarrama will be performing Johann Baptist Vanhal's Concerto in C Major for Viola, first movement (Allegro Moderato). Hector is 16 years old, and has been playing viola for over seven years. He is a junior at Bear River High School and first started playing viola when he was in 4th grade. He has been addicted to the art ever since. He has been in numerous youth symphonies and ensembles, as well as community orchestras. He has competed in State Solo twice, receiving high honors both times, and plans on competing again this year. Also, this year marked his second year performing with All-State orchestra. Currently, he is an active participant in the NUYS (Northern Utah Youth Symphony) and the BYO (Bonneville Youth Orchestra) and is privately studying under Dr. Michael Palumbo, Professor of Viola, at Weber State University.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony is a project of the Lake Bonneville Symphonic Society. Greetings!

It was great to see everyone again on Saturday.

This is a just a quick email. Please let me know when you aren't going to make rehearsal. It really cuts down on my dramatic dismay when people aren't there! It's really easy; just reply to this email with a date, and a reasonable excuse.

We miss having everyone rehearsing together at once. It makes it hard to prepare for a concert!

Oh, by the way, we DO have rehearsal this Saturday, notwithstanding MLK day on Monday.

Thanks to everyone who braved the storm! I couldn't believe we had 8 inches of snow at noon, and then it started Raining! What planet are we on?

Hey, flutists! You missed out on some friendly & free coaching! Jana came to rehearsal with me and covered the missing flute parts!... She might be talked into coming again on the 8th (she flies out on the 9th), but only if you are coming to rehearsal, K?

Things are starting to shape up for our next concert, and we even tried some music for wind ensemble. Thanks again for a great rehearsal, and Enjoy your Christmas and New Year break! My life is better because of you, and I hope you are enjoying youth symphony this year. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to make things even better!

Today we read through the Accolay for the first time, and we worked together on the Schubert (2nd Movement). We also sight-read the Waltz from Sleeping Beauty, but we were hoping it would have more brassy & woodwindy parts, so there's a chance we won't be playing it, but we will be playing something a little more interesting for the winds & brass.

Today's Rehearsal:

We enjoyed sight reading the Bruch concerto and the second movement of the Schubert today. It will be really neat to play the Schubert straight through at Abravanel Hall in February.

We will have the music for the Accolay concerto by next week.

The winds went in the other room and sight-read a piece together today. Funeral music by Wagner! They thought that was pretty funny. (the funeral part!) The strings worked on some tough passages in the Schubert together.

Thanks for a great rehearsal. We missed a few people today that we didn't expect to be gone. We hope everyone's okay!

Thank you! What a lovely concert!

Thanks to everyone for their hard work & preparation for the concert tonight. I appreciate all the practice & preparation, travel from as far as Riverdale and Garland, hauling of percussion equipment, help with sectionals and workshops, attendance at our retreat, and cookie baking!

I noticed that 3 people were absent at the concert. I am so sorry... I have a feeling they were confused on the time! I loved doing it at 5pm, but I didn't mean to leave anyone in the dust. I suppose this is why it's so important to read these emails!

Please have a wonderful holiday this week, travel safely, and enjoy your time off. If you forgot to hand in your music, please bring it to the next rehearsal. I haven't checked through it yet, but if you did not hand it in, you know who you are! :)

I just don't have time to call, and I've actually had this assignment for several weeks and keep forgetting to ask, so please save my skin and volunteer. :)

November 13 Concerto Auditions:

Congratulations to Krystell Taylor (LYCO) and our own Sarah Pehrson for your great auditions for Concerto Night! We look forward to performing with you on Feb 5th. We also have one other soloist (on the viola) who we will announce later if the music all works out!

November 13 Rehearsal:

Thanks to the strings for coming early! You are awesome!

I'm sure we all felt the need to do some practicing for this Saturday's concert! Let's be sure we spend the time to make it great! It was also really nice to have Rob back, and to have the percussion equipment out. Fun Fun!

This Saturday, November 20th:

This is our concert day! Yay!
I will be at the Middle School Auditorium unloading percussion and setting up at 8:30 am. Anyone willing to help is welcome!

Rehearsal is from 9-11am on the stage. LYCO will be rehearsing from 11-12, so we need to be prompt and focused. :)

Concert: Be there by 4:30 pm. The concert starts at 5pm. LYCO will play first (about 20 minutes) then we will take the stage.

There is an admission charge! It defrays the cost of renting the auditorium. It is $3 for adults, $2 for children 11 & under, $2 for seniors, and $12 for families all living under one roof. Thank you for your support in this! Our budget is extremely tight and we believe strongly in continuing to provide this program for our youth!

Messiah Note:

A Huge Thank You to Amy Elmer and Cami Dilg for assisting in our rehearsal this morning. Along with Nada & Sarah Pehrson and me, we were able to split up for sectionals. Thank you, Thank you! You are all awesome. We were missing a few people, some I had heard from, some I hadn't! We hope you all come back next week! :)

Next Week, November 13th:

I meant to announce this at the end of rehearsal this morning, but I lost track of time and we ended rather abruptly: I need to have all Strings ready to rehearse next week on the 13th at 8:30am! Yes, that means everyone that plays violin, viola, cello, or bass! We have a lot to accomplish, and I feel strongly that the strings need to meet a half-hour early. So, next week, please be ready to play by 8:30. This means arrival time: 8:20!

I will be there by 8:10 to set up. Big smiles and giggles for anyone who comes early enough to help out!

Winds & Brass, please arrive by 8:50am, come quietly into the band room & set up your stuff, then warm up in the orchestra room so you are ready to rehearse by 9:00am! This will facilitate the best use of our time.

Does it sound like I'm a little worried about the upcoming concert? Well... I'm not worried, but I do think we need a longer rehearsal next week, so I'm asking for one! Thanks!

Remember, the Nov 20th concert is at 5pm. Please plan to be there by 4:30pm.
